Well, now that we’ve gotten the more explicit songs out of the way we can dive deeper into the subtle ones. Ghost World by Aimee Mann takes the graphic novel as a jumping off point, but the song explores that summer after graduating from high school and the limbo, melancholy and isolation that happens as your childhood (and the people you knew) drops away and you’re waiting to move forward into a new life. A very lonely place indeed, especially if you don’t know what it is you’re going to be doing. I would say the album, Bachelor No. 2, Or the Last Remains of the Dodo is all about loneliness in its many different forms, so you may want to check it all out. This song in particular for me has that gut wrenching feel of loneliness and solitary boredom that is both exquisite and painful.

I guess this is a cover, but it’s the only version I know - “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” by Everything But the Girl.

These are the standout lyrics for me:

If I stand all alone will the shadows hide the color of my heart

Blue for the tears, black for the night’s fears.

Is it old people only here or? I found this one spoke to me a bit - I tend to be isolationist, but wonder if someday I'll be lonely.

I second Aimee Mann (almost anything - but give "Deathly" a listen) and Cyndi. I didn't realize "Walk On By" was such a sad, lonely song until I heard her version of the Dionne Warwick classic. Dionne's version is great, but she sings it so chirpy, the lyrics were kind of lost on me.

This song that Paul McCartney covered , originally a Ricky Nelson song,, or at least Ricky had it as a hit single . in an album Paul released about 18 months after Linda's passing, called Run, Devil , Run . It was mostly covers of oldies with a couple new Paul songs .... I remember reading that Paul's kids were almost on a suicide watch for Paul, that that his youngest, James, slept with his Dad for a stretch of time, due to his and his sisters fears regarding their Dad's pain and sorrow. Paul covered this song on the LP I referenced earlier, "Run, Devil,, Run"

There's a place where lovers go To cry their troubles away And we call it Lonesome Town Where the broken hearts stay

You can buy a dream or two To last you all through the years And the only price you pay Is heart full of tears

Going down to Lonesome Town, where the broken hearts stay I'm going down to Lonesome Town, to cry my troubles away

And in the town of broken dreams The streets are filled with regret Maybe down in Lonesome Town Well I can learn to forget

Lead solo

Going down to Lonesome Town, where the lonely hearts stay I'm going down to Lonesome Town, to cry, to cry my troubles away

And in the town of broken dreams The streets are filled with regret Maybe down in Lonesome Town I can learn to forget

Maybe down in Lonesome Town I can learn to forget
