No. I would need to work, since I assume I wouldn't get the 5 million until after the 10 years are up. I don't want to work in Gary, Indiana any more than I want to live there.

Primary Residence: I might have done when younger because I worked remotely and had 14+ weeks of holiday. But now, no way.

Yes I could do it. 5 million would change my life. I would buy or build a small apartment building near the Indian University campus, a shitty school but still a frequented place filled with purposeful people. I would rent apartments in my building at low rates to students in good standing at the University, so there would always be people around. Young people. I like young people. I'd make sure the building was quite secure but otherwise modest looking. I would also maybe get involved in tutoring HS or college students, since I'm a soon to be retired college professor. it might be nice to have dogs and a fenced big yard. And take them to the shore often. Gary is on the lake and has beautiful beaches and a huge natural preserve. Its also right over the border from Chicago.

Here is the University stats: The acceptance rate of undergraduate school is 85.48% and the graduation rate is 38% last year.

Sounds like someone like me could really have a good impact with those numbers. Maybe have a goal of helping 5-10 students make it through and graduate every year.

Unfortunately, Mayor Hatcher, the first black mayor of Gary, chased many people away from the city. This article states the population went from 175k to 80k. He inspired the creation of a brand new city next door, Merrillville, for people to flee to.
