Because she's actually a fairly private person who's not thirsty for attention or acclaim and only resurfaces in public when she has new music out. I actually have a lot of respect for that.

Oh she was big, remember she was big around the world, not just in the US. I always liked her music because I felt it's appeal was timeless.

she's great.... I have all her albums (except maybe the last one)...... but to answer your question:
1. She barely tours, esp the US (I heard it's cuz of a drug issue and she's banned from entering but that could be gossip)
2. All her songs basically sounds the same (I know that's not really true, but it's true "enough")
3. Her voice is truly beautiful, and I love her music and songs...... but if we're honest, her vocal range is pretty damn narrow! Granted, she sure as hell milks every bit she can from that range---and she has a beautiful tone-----but her technical vocal skills are not typical for a "diva"
4. PS "Sade" is actually the name of the BAND..... and one can infer, her nickname, since her full name is Helen Folasade Adu

That's not true, there are youtube videos of her performing in the USA.
I think she was raising her daughter or something...away from the limelight. I think she lived in the Bahamas or some island?
She was huge when I was in grade school. I bought all her CDs. I remember watching her live, she couldn't really hit the high notes...this was before autotune.
I did hear rumors that she is working on a new album.

OP, I wouldn't confuse social media exposure for popularity. Diva is definitely the wrong word for Sade, but she (or, they, if we're going to pretend anyone means the band when they say "Sade") are still very popular. Every time she tours, it's to stadiums full of ecstatic fans and she seems to be one of the few legacy artists who can still sell albums. I HATE the long hiatuses between albums. You'd think as she aged, they'd try and close the gap a little as her gorgeous voice was already showing a bit of age in the last tour.
