I agree w/you R25, in the states it's usually black men/white women and yes it's usually lower-class or drug related. But in the UK and Canada it's often white men and black women, both middle-class.
Having said that, my white mother met my black father in university-there's was some pot and hash smoking, of course but it was 1968.

Christ, you people need to get out more. I grew up a military brat. A third of the families at every base we were stationed at (all over the world) were interracial. One of my best friends had a Japanese mom and a Mexican-American dad. No one gave a damn. There were always black-white, black-Asian, and white-Asian couples. It was never a big deal until I entered "civilian" society. White people, in particular, seem to have a twisted obsession with race, as this thread confirms. Get over yourselves. The world isn't just changing, it has already bypassed you: the fucking POTUS is biracial! I actually find it HARDER to date in NYC than back home - despite there being a much larger dating pool.

What I'm pleased to see is that there are a lot more white male / black woman couples. That was a rarity 20-30 years ago. Now, not so much.

As a native New Yorker who never plans to live anywhere else, I have to say your observation is 100% spot-on.
Race is, and always will be, a significant issue here - it is those who come from elsewhere who really make it more liberal.
Oh, and for straight people, being divorced is still a huge issue. BTW, NYC's schools are among the most racially segregated in the country.
Asian women have managed to break through with straight guys, but Asian men? Not. At. All.
The historic prejudices about Puerto Ricans and blacks remain strong as ever, believe me. The huge population of available Muslim men in NYC do not stand a chance either, IMO.
