Which Songs Make Your Heart Break When You Hear Them?

Speaking on Ronstadt, her version of J.D. Souther's PRISONER IN DISGUISE (with Souther doing harmony vocals) is one of her best ever recorded performances.

R8, yes. It's on the same PRISONER IN DISGUISE disc and I like it better than Whitney Houston's "bring the house down if it kills me" version. PRISONER is a great album overall, maybe Ronstadt's best.

Cedar Lane by First Aid Kit. I heard it for the first time shortly after my mom died. The beautiful sound of it stopped me and then I heard the lyrics and it was all too close to home. None of you EGs will even know what I’m talking about, but gay sadcore New Zealander (and muse of DL Fave Kevin Abstract) Lontalius’ ‘sleep thru ur alarms’ is haunting & complex. He wrote it at just 17 years old about his ex-boyfriend’s depression, and it sounds far more mature; think later period Sigur Ros or Sparklehorse.

Someone on YT has made a fanvid about the late Corey Haim using the track, which compounds the sadness. It’s linked below for anyone who wants to experience it..

If You Leave - O.M.D.

AIDS was just bubbling under the radar when Sixteen Candles came out and this song was in that movie....with the release of each John Hughes film, more friends had gotten sick and it is weird looking back that the music brings back memories/emotions. Cyndi Lauper’s “Change of Heart” also gives me the chills as friends were dying around that time and it felt like a chill in the air....someone else posted PET SHOP BOYS “Being Boring” and I remember wondering if the dying was ever going to end.....somehow science and medicine came together and stopped the death/dying...and when I sometimes tell my 30 something co-workers about the late 80’s/early 90’s, I am amazed more of us didn’t lose our minds....but we proved to be resilient....

George Michael - Jesus to a Child

The song was a melancholy tribute to Michael's Brazilian lover Anselmo Feleppa, whom he met when performing in Rio de Janeiro in 1991. Anselmo died two years later from an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage. Michael had been unable to write for the next 18 months as a consequence of his grief, but then penned the words to "Jesus to a Child" in little more than an hour, indicating that the time was right to move on with his life. The song is written with a rhythm and harmony that is influenced by the Brazilian bossa nova style.

Until his death on Christmas Day 2016, George would consistently dedicate the song to Anselmo before performing it live.
