Was he masculinity-shamed into being a critic of people who oppose Trump?

He’s a reporter…who reported a story. I wouldn’t struggle much with psychoanalyzing him.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 4, 2022 1:10 PM |
Reporters report. It's a job.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 4, 2022 1:23 PM |
He "reported" a story (that was already covered in the media months ago) in a biased way that tried to make the Bidens (who weren't in the White House at the time of the relevant actions) look bad while burying that the Trumps (who actually were in the White House at the time) were doing the exact same things.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 4, 2022 1:28 PM |
He long ago figured out that conservatives will pay to spread their lies.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 4, 2022 1:46 PM |
I used to love Matt Taibbi when he'd take down idiots like Thomas Friedman. Then like Glenn Greenwald, he went nuts. If I recall, Taibbi was trained as a Russian specialist and spent a lot of time in Russia early in his career or in college. If there's any media figure likely to be a Russian asset, it's probably him.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 4, 2022 1:49 PM |
Taibbi has always been a drug-addled creepy hack who got one thing right about Wall Street. Like so many mediocrities in journalism he went gonzo reactionary when he felt this would get him more page views.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 4, 2022 1:55 PM |
The FSB got to him. He and Mark Ames edited the Exile during Russia’s expat fun years, fucking and snorting everything in site. They got little too critically close to early Putin hijinks and were abruptly shut down and fled Moscow. For while, remained critical of the trajectory, and then flipped pro-Putin during the Mueller investigations. Clearly, time-released kompromat and/or family threats involving radioactive beverages.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 4, 2022 2:01 PM |
Ames always had hints of rightwing nutjobbery, even before The eXile. He was one of those tiresome post-punk types who thought wearing a swastika really pissed off those pussy leftists.
Taibbi graduated from a Russian university and his work (and, in fact, a lot of the work in eXile) can be read as anti-American propaganda, even from the beginning. If someone told me he was recruited by the Russians while in college, I'd believe them.
The entire point of the magazine was to paint American expatriates in Russia as moral derelicts, and they were allowed to stay in operation for over a decade after numerous articles about how Russia was so much better than America. You can find several examples in the Wikipedia page.

There's nothing biased about his reporting. It's all out there. Attempting to discredit him either is real bad faith action on your part, OP, or a way of living in denial about the corruption on both sides of the aisles, progressive and conservative.

R3, the Biden administration was not doing the EXACT same things. Trump was silencing critics, opposition and facts against him. The Biden administration requested that COVID conspiracy tweets be flagged for context.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 10, 2023 11:16 AM |
R2 That wasn't reporting. That was straight up licking Elon Musk's ass.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 10, 2023 11:16 AM |
You can tell in the hearing what a creep he is so his appearance there is pretty much weakening his and Jim Jordan’s case.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 10, 2023 11:19 AM |
BTW the talking points were he only reported on behavior detrimental to Democrats but he reported on Republicans too. He answered his critics on Twitter but that doesn't stop the lies. The left lies as much as the right. Both disgust me.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 10, 2023 11:22 AM |
R14 You always know you're dealing with a MAGA troll when they say things like "the left lies as much as the right."
Take your bullshit to "Truth" Social, ya fuckin' cultist.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 10, 2023 11:25 AM |
Ironic R15 calling someone a cultist.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 10, 2023 11:28 AM |
R16 Another thing MAGA cultists always say.
Fuck off, MAGAt.

When some leftwinger read his long forgotten memoir that bragged about abusing underage hookers and harassing the women at his job. They tweeted about and Matt felt cancelled. So naturally he took a scorched earth policy to the whole left.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 10, 2023 11:32 AM |
R18 has it. (I recall reading that as well.) Cancel culture drove him the the safe haven for white straight men, the conspiracy-minded right. He may not believe what he spews, but he’s sure as hell going to argue it.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 10, 2023 1:16 PM |
He's been a favorite of Bill Maher for decades, along with Maureen Dowd, Ann Coulter and other delightful human beings.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 10, 2023 1:20 PM |
He went to Russia and was compromised. He and his reporter pal also sexually harassed women who worked for them, asking them for blowjobs and anal sex. One of the women who worked for them explained that women were complaining. “What you are doing isn’t funny.”
To which they replied, “Yes it is.”
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 10, 2023 1:21 PM |
I love you R11.
Gym Jordan is so dim-witted. He’s being run over by his Democratic Committee members in this farce. That being said, please let the winguts (looking at you Comer and MGT) spend two years holding hearings about nothing while (hopefully) the rest of Congress might get something, anything, done.

Matt is a nepo baby. He’d be nowhere without the leg up his reporter father Mike - who at various times worked at NBC, CBS and ABC - gave him.
Taibbi is the adoptive name of Matt’s father whose real name was Loren Ames Denny

I created the Taibbi Boot when I worked for Martin Margiela; Matt and Margarine inspired me.

[quote]He’s a reporter…who reported a story.
No. He regurgitated cherry-picked propaganda for an authoritarian oligarch for a price.
The fact that he admitted yesterday that he hadn't seen emails that showed the Trump administration trying to shut down tweets proves that he "reported" on a prepackaged "story" with pre-ordained conclusions.
Hacky whore for hire.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 10, 2023 2:13 PM |
Taibbi was destroyed by the Democrats during yesterday's hearing. He came off as an utter buffoon, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 10, 2023 2:14 PM |
Taibbi: "I am *not* a so-called journalist!!!"
Well, you are now bitch.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 10, 2023 2:20 PM |
Very few journalists have any integrity, Most of them are career driven, and their mission is not to report the news but to further their career. Most would take down anything, no matter its importance to society, if it meant an award or a raise.
I worked in the field for many years and finally left because I couldn't deal with the constant hustle among my peers for fame, recognition, power.... having a discussion about ethics or morals was taboo. Having a discussion about winning a Pulitzer was the norm.

[quote]Reporters report. It's a job.
And what does that have to do with Matt Taibbi?
[quote]The FSB got to him? Who?
Shame there isn't some search feature on the internet that could unearth such information.

R29 years ago I worked with an aspiring journalist who went on to have a decent degree of success in east coast political media. What struck me most about her was how two faced she was. Syrupy sweet and friendly to people's faces one moment while making nasty snarky jabs about them the minute they left the room.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 10, 2023 2:32 PM |
R31 Yeah. Maggie Haberman's a straight up cunt.

How the hell do you talk behind somebody's back on an online discussion board?
I mean we're all here.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 10, 2023 2:58 PM |
He's really full of himself until Dems start questioning him - then his nervousness is comical.

Talking about R34 behind his back as I type.

This was posted on another thread but it deserves to be repeated here. Taibbi gets skewered alive in this interview.

I love Matt Taibbi, and I've been following his work since his Exiled days. He's a great journalist.
Every Friday he does an hour long talk with novelist Walter Kirn which I always look forward to, they're both (in my eyes) fantastic people; clever, witty, smart, erudite, dedicated and moral. Here's yesterdays talk if anyone is interested
