What was it like living in the 1950s?

If we have anyone on dL who was alive during the 50s what was it actually like? Life looked so beautiful then. Was it really peaceful and secure for the average person?

Most homes did not have central air conditioning or heat.

If you were poor you most likely worked in a factory.

Yes, the 1950s. When being gay was illegal and considered a mental illness! And women and racial minorities were treated as second class citizens. A magical time.

And yet strangely enough, it beats our current time period by miles.

People responding would most likely be answering from the standpoint of the child most of them were at the time. And so, answering from the point of view of the little tyke that I was, the 1950s felt secure, stable, and hopeful. That changed a few years into the 60s.
