Mine is the 'Little Drummer Boy' version by Bing and David. I never get tired of listening it, especially the lyrics sung by David.
Peace on Earth can it be?
Years from now, perhaps we'll see?
See the day of glory
See the day, when men of good will
Live in peace, live in peace again
Peace on Earth
Can it be

OP, I love the Little Drummer Boy as well. Bob Seeger's rendition is pretty awesome. Also, I like "O, Holy Night". Apart from those, I detest secular Christmas songs.
Oddly enough, for someone who is not religious or even Christian, I do like Christmas hymns.

My favorite non-hymn Christmas song is Jethro Tull's well, [italic]Christmas Song."[/italic]
Once in Royal David's City stood a lonely cattle shed, Where a mother held her baby.
You'd do well to remember the things He later said. When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
You'll just laugh when I tell you to take a running jump. You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making That Christmas spirit is not what you drink.
So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry, And how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures, Remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.
(Hey! Santa! Pass us that bottle, will you?)

Another vote for Merry Little Christmas, it's a brilliant song and so satisfying to sing, although tricky.
Fun Fact: the original lyrics were deemed too depressing by Judy:
Some of the original lyrics penned by Martin were rejected before filming began.[9][10] When presented with the original draft lyric, Garland, her co-star Tom Drake and director Vincente Minnelli criticized the song as depressing, and asked Martin to change the lyrics. Though he initially resisted, Martin made several changes to make the song more upbeat. For example, the lines "It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past" became "Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight". Garland's version of the song, which was also released as a single by Decca Records, became popular among United States troops serving in World War II; her performance at the Hollywood Canteen brought many soldiers to tears.[11]
In 1957, Frank Sinatra asked Martin to revise the line "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow." He told Martin, "The name of my album is A Jolly Christmas. Do you think you could jolly up that line for me?"[10] Martin's new line was "Hang a shining star upon the highest bough." Martin made several other alterations, changing from the future tense to the present, so that the song's focus is a celebration of present happiness, rather than anticipation of a better future.[12]

At the risk of exposing my deep seated Scrooge, there are only two Christmas songs I like: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Judy Garland and Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song". I can stand Elvis' "Blue Christmas" simply because of the strange and enchanting sound of the background vocals.
There are several I despise, most notably McCartney's "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" and that lonesome and blue sounding song from "A Charlie Brown Christmas".
At work, I have been hearing Streisand belting out "My Favorite Things". If I didn't already despise her singing, that song would have done it by itself.
Bah, humbug.

R1, you've obviously never heard Gene Autry's rendition of "Here comes Santa Claus". Put that on a loop and by the third time through I'd confess to flying an airplane into the World Trade Center, being the lone gunman on the grassy knoll as well as at Ford's Theater, and the guy who convinced Hitler's mother to not have an abortion... anything to make it stop.

I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay And when it's dry and ready, with dreidel I shall play. Oh, Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, I made you out of clay Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, with Dreidel I shall play.

Indeed, R35. Which is why I was thrilled to see Joni's powerful 2000 version of "Both Sides Now" (which I already loved) included in "Love, Actually". "I'll Be Home for Christmas."
Whenever he hears it, my almost-94-year-old Dad to this day still tears up and gets a faraway look in his eyes. Says the song transports him back to the various way stations during WW2 and Korea where during the Christmas season all his fellow GIs had that very look in their eyes, wondering what their loved ones back home were doing THAT minute as the song played across the miles. Says that black, white, brown, yellow--didn't matter in those minutes; the pain and loss were too real. And then he gazes off again, softly singing the words "If only in my dreams."
Ach! My heart!

Sometime in the mid-late ‘90’s in December, I was in Best Buy looking at cds and this song came on. I remember freezing in my tracks, not moving at all, because the combination of the beauty of the song, the familiarity of the singer, and the stupid Christmas feeling even the most black-hearted soul can get once in their life was all just so gloriously overwhelming.
Second fave is Patti Labelle singing O Holy Night. The first time I heard it, I was falling asleep with Letterman or Leno or someone on, she was a guest and sang it. I thought I was dreaming because her voice was simply perfect.

[quote] It's a tie between Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle and The Christmas Waltz. I like Frank Sinatra's version best.
It's weird, and I don' t know why, but it wasn't until I was an adult that a first heard any version of "A Christmas Waltz". I think I heard it first on my cable provider Sounds of the Season.
I fell in love with it. I know it's been covered many times, but the first version I heard was by a woman vocalist. I'd like to say she was Nancy Wilson or Peggy Lee, not sure.
If a hear a man's voice singing it, I want it to be Sinatra. I adore his version.
I wish I
I too love Sinatra's

No British people here or do they hate this? I first herd it on the British 'The Office' and thought it was delightfully unsentimental but sweet.
I love this band, all of them good decent guys who had a blast performing.

I like this cute lil ditty from 1960s singer-songwriter Margo Guryan, who died recently. Claudine Longet did a fun version of this song too.

R145, Slade were massively successful in the UK in the early 70s, and a lot of their songs are fondly remembered. This isn’t one of them. It is played everywhere you go from October onwards. I have had to listen to it for almost fifty years, and it sets my teeth on edge.

Christmas coincides with the Winter Solstice which officially marks the darkest time of the year and the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. This is when seasonal affective disorder sets in, elderly people's lungs get swamped with pneumonia, and sensitive people start thinking about ending it all. That's why you have special feasts and lights and music and gift giving. It has nothing to do with the historical Jesus's birthdate, other than that it was convenient for the early Church to coopt pagan solstice festivals for that purpose.

I performed Morten Lauridsen's setting of "O Magnum Mysterium" in college chamber choir, and it immediately became a favorite, and he a favorite composer. The Nordic Chamber Choir's recording is singular. No one has done it better.
Program Note (via the internet, because I'm multitasking):
"O Magnum Mysterium" is a text from the Holy Matins of Christmas describing the wonderment of the animals as they gaze on Christ: “O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger!”
That very last note gives me chills everytime (especially if I'm listening through headphones).

Another Lauridsen piece commonly performed during this season, is "Sure On This Shining Night", another favorite of mine. While popular in winter concert repertoire, the source poem is actually set in the summer season...
A program note (via the Internet):
"The text of Sure on This Shining Night is a poem by James Agee from his book “Permit Me Voyage”. The poem is written from the perspective of an older man walking outside on a summer night, reflecting back on his life."

Boy that Annie L. Xmas album was painful to listen to & I say that as a fan of most of her music.
Sometimes the original arrangement of a song is the best way to do it & no new one will do it any justice.
She actually put an upbeat kids choir on "Silent Night" as some sort of echo on her version & thought it was okay?
All 12 were horrible & shrill.

Interestingly, while it is one of the most orthodox Christmas hymns, that evokes a solemn high church feeling, the English lyrics were translated by a Unitarian transcendentalist.
