The only other artist to sweep all the major categories was Christopher Cross, and we all know what happened to him. Like the editor for Billboard said last night, it can be a curse because it can signal a peak for your career and creates backlash against you, especially among other artists. There's no way to top winning everything with your first album.
I remember Natalie Cole scolding the Grammys for awarding Amy Winehouse with multiple awards for her first album. She said it would be bad for her career and she was right.

Christopher Cross had several huge hits around 1981. However, that's the time MTV was starting to drive the industry. MTV didn't support adult contemporary music at the time, and Cross's appearance wasn't considered to be MTV-ready.
Basically, the industry had became shallow and would rather focus on pretty men instead of talented men.

A big reason for Billie Eilish's popularity is that fat, unattractive girls can look to her and see someone who looks like them. Most females in the music biz these days are thin AF and look like pole dancers in a Miami strip club (or in Cardi B's case, a converted garage in Hunts Point), so Billie is relatable to all the homely chunk-a-lunk chicks. The same demographic who dye their hair neon colors, get piercings and call themselves "queer" or "non-binary."

r17 Whitney did not grow up in Newark. Why do people still believe when a simple google search will tell you she grew up in a two story house with a pool in East Orange. They moved out of the Newark projects when she was four but not she’s forever associated with some poverty stricken childhood when it doesn’t even make sense. Her mom was a freaking background singer for Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin! It’s not chump change. They were decidedly middle class. You don’t have to be poor to have a fucked family and drug problems. There are a lot of wealthy heiresses that can relate.

They are already miles away from the “performances” that taylor swift and katy perry churned out. Those two were never entertaining at all. Taylor Swift is 30 years old now—fair game for criticisms of her childish music. Eilish is half her age. Some people are triggered, probably by her youth.
We live in an age where the indiviual decides to an even greater extent what they consume. You decide to click on the link or not. Radio/MTV is almost a nonfactor for many. Thus, I see little reason to be irked by any popstar. I remember when Gaga was in the newspapers every day with another wacky outfit. I thought it was fun. But apart from one or two songs, her music was easy to avoid.
It would be interesting for every dismissive comment to include a recommendation for someone the commenter DOES like.

In an evening where Alicia Keyes, Lizzo et al proclaimed and promoted music as a channel to peace, love, spirit and unity, Billie EIlish swept all of the major awards.
And what r83 said about the suicide cloud.

Anybody have audio of her speaking in a "blaccent"? All the videos I've seen of her speaking are in the same average white girl voice.

Why isn't she Billile O'Connell?

The fact that she had the top-selling record last year tells me everything I need to know about her Grammies. The Grammy voters are afraid of being "out of touch," so they figure if something's popular, it must be good. (cf. Beyoncé)
They could get away with that years ago when it was people like Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon that they were showering with Grammies, but it doesn't work anymore.

The Grammys famously did NOT give Beyonce album of the year.

The Oscars announced she will be performing a special set during the telecast. WTF? It's bad enough she's singing the next Bond theme.

I heard the blaccent. Zoomers are all about appropriating street talk.

Mumble whisper is the new singing

Do some people really think she's unique and weird? She's no Bjork, heck she's not even a St Vincent.

R41 Why does she have such awful skin?

R138: as many kids consume their music via earbuds, the mumbling-singing style actually sounds rather intimate, it’s as if she’s whispering into your ears, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing, aurally speaking.

I listened to Billie's record last night. What a piece of shit!!!

At this point, we need a change of pace from Taylor Swift. Step aside, TayTay. It's time for a new generation of talentless hacks !

Billie reminds me a little of Feist, but without the talent.

[quote][R17] Whitney did not grow up in Newark. Why do people still believe when a simple google search will tell you she grew up in a two story house with a pool in East Orange.
East Orange is only "middle class" for black people. Esp ones from Newark. She wasn't in the heart of the "ghetto" anymore but you clearly don't know East Orange. And the ghetto is literally just blocks away. There's a quote like that in Cissy's book actually.

I can't believe everyone is saying how talented she is. She's terrible.

I've heard of her but finally gotten around to listening to her record. It's ASMR.
