CNN host Van Jones mistakenly identified the song Vice President-elect Kamala Harris walked out to before her speech on Saturday, and now people are dragging him on Twitter.
"It was great to hear Kamala. I want to decode some of stuff Kamala did for the base of this party," Jones said on CNN after Harris finished her speech.
"First of all, she walked out to Beyoncé. Drop mic," he said. "The fact that somebody that's gonna be in the White House can walk out authentically to Beyoncé was amazing. People were going nuts about the walkout song."
The only issue was that Harris didn't walk out to a Beyoncé song — she actually walked out to "Work That" by Mary J. Blige.
People on Twitter subsequently dragged Jones for confusing the two singers.
Representatives for Jones didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Why do some of you comment without even a clue of the context? Van Jones was making a point about the significance of TWO black women, Kamala Harris and Beyonce Knowles. He wasn't asked who the singer was and he guessed wrong. He spoke as an "expert" - "Let me decode..." - but he exposed his own ignorance in the process. If you're going to speak on Beyonce's significance then you should at least be able to recognize her voice.

Mary J had a few crossover pop hits, but most of her (insanely good) catalog was confined to R&B charts. Exactly the same thing with Chaka Khan, another brilliant singer with fabulous material who should've had more success but was "too R&B." They both make Beyonce look like a hack.
BTW, in one of the two recent Whitney Houston documentaries, there were several record executives who were interviewed and went into a lot of detail about how Whitney was packaged by Clive Davis and Arista to appeal to a mainstream white audience. One of the most important things was to not give her songs that were R&B/Soul-heavy because she wouldn't cross over with that material.
| by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 10, 2020 2:25 AM |
Mary J Blige is THE R&B HipHop superstar and legend. I'm not joking. Beyonce was queen of the world for 15 years, and like it or not, the world's greatest live performer. Even if you don't like her vocal tone - she is an extremely gifted singer. You're old gay whiteness shows Datalounge. Van Jones has a flabby white ass too. I want to kiss him. Nice face and lips with dark candy eyes. But don't look down.
| by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 10, 2020 2:25 AM |
Mary J has had 16 Top 40 hits, 6 of which went Top 20. She's had more than a few crossover hits. And she sold albums too.

[Quote] One of the most important things was to not give her songs that were R&B/Soul-heavy because she wouldn't cross over with that material.
And yet most of Whitney's big pop hits were huge R&B hits as well, so the "Whiteney" thing was largely an industry creation.
| by Anonymous | reply 97 | November 10, 2020 2:29 AM |
Jones is undeniably sexy IMO. That said, I can't stand his commentary - useless, jellyfishy, sanctimonious and suspiciously influenced by his association with JarVanka. I watch MSNBC for factual news, FOX for entertaining propaganda (that keeps me informed of new false narratives that the Mercers/Murdochs/Koch are pushing) and CNN almost never because it adds little value for me. That's an oversimplification. Arista tried to play both sides. And it was Whitney who wanted to record schlock like "Greatest Love of All."
| by Anonymous | reply 99 | November 10, 2020 2:32 AM |
Whether or not you liked the actual songs that she recorded, Whitney had the sort of angelic, far-ranging voice that only comes along once in a century. Ne one could cover her music and those that actually could (Celine maybe?) still couldn't do it justice. I am not discounting Beyonce or Mary J. Blidge - but neither compare to Whitney Houston. There is Auto-Tune and there was Whitney Houston.

| by Anonymous | reply 102 | November 10, 2020 2:45 AM |
The funny thing is for all the talk of Whitney as a "clipped wing" R&B talent, she was always at her best down the middle - pop soul, dance-pop, MOR.
| by Anonymous | reply 103 | November 10, 2020 2:48 AM |
r97 What was said in the doc was that they didn't want Whitney to be the female James Brown. And black audiences in the 80s did call her "Whiteney." It was said that getting booed at the Soul Train awards was one of the things that set her off into a downward spiral. She never got over it.
| by Anonymous | reply 104 | November 10, 2020 2:57 AM |
Robyn Crawford's book makes it quite clear that they were both dependent on drugs BEFORE Whitney became a success. Her demons were already in place. And if "black audiences" considered her Whiteney, who was requesting her songs on black radio?
| by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 10, 2020 2:59 AM |
r105 you need to watch both docs. It's all laid out.
Whitney was a recreational coke user (like everybody else) in the 80s but once she hooked up with Bobby she got hooked. That's also when she starting smoking the shit. Once you start smoking it, it's almost impossible to quit.
| by Anonymous | reply 106 | November 10, 2020 3:03 AM |
Whitney did love Greatest Love of All. There are more performances of her singing that song than a crescendo can bare. She sang the fuck out of it, but it's my least favorite of hers. She loved it. But make no mistake - she wanted to do more urban music as soon as she matured a bit. Not to please the black audience, to please herself. When she sang One Moment in Time at the Grammys or the Welcome Home Heroes Concert - she established her voice as the greatest and most beautiful of her time. More thrilling and powerful than Streisand or Aretha. In her way. Whitney knew what great singing was about.
But Whitney loved Janet and Brandy and Monica and Natalie C and Lauryn Hill and that bad boy with the beat too. Make no mistake. She loved Mary J Blige and Chaka too. They partied for sure. Whitney knew her voice was greatness - so she enjoyed singing soaring songs, beautiful ballads and those key changing long note vibrato polished perfect finish showstoppers. But she had more to her taste and style. Whitney was urban. A gospel girl. She was a physical and vocal goddess. Can't fight it your destiny. But you can explore beyond it.
Here is a great interview with her. She is aware and co-operative. Astute, appreciative. Interested in her new direction. She'd already proved everything else. Then came My Love Is Your Love. A classic album. Doesn't matter that old white men don't remember it as well as her other triumphs. It's a great fucking achievement. Also a smart segway and adaptation to her somewhat diminished vocal prowess. Before she really fell hard.
To say her voice was the greatest voice in popular music in a century, is not hyperbole. Read what her peers and fans have to say, as well as vocal critics everywhere. Whitney had the best voice I've ever heard in my life. Streisand, Aretha, Tony Bennett and Gladys Knight said so. Tens of millions of others agree. She is the G.O.A.T.

[Quote] Whitney was a recreational coke user (like everybody else) in the 80s but once she hooked up with Bobby she got hooked
There was drug use among the Houston siblings in their pre teens and teens. Robyn tells of how Whitney had to be picked up to even get her out of bed to go to school. The bullying Whitney suffered has been much referenced. But what goes unstated in Robyn's anecdote is that Cissy and John couldn't be relied upon to get Whitney to school. Sadly, the same could be said of Whitney and Bobby as parents to Bobbi Kristina.

Whitney told Robyn that they had to cut the coke out, that there was no place for it where they were going (i.e. to the top). And did they cut it out? No. They were already hooked. Robyn was even disturbed enough by her own use that she called a family meeting where both her (divorced) parents attended. Whitney was already an addict, She was simply more functional in the 1980s until the early 1990s.
