Unresolved Vintage Showbiz Gossip.

Whats your unsolved showbiz mystery or bit of scandal you always wondered about thats never been addressed?

by Anonymousreply 155June 23, 2019 4:39 PM

I mean we all have a pretty good idea of what happened, but it would be nice to finally have justice brought to Natalie Wood's murderer Robert Wagner. Christopher Walken needs to come forward with what he knows, as well.

by Anonymousreply 1June 6, 2019 10:49 PM

The murder of silent film director William Desmond Taylor in 1922.

William Mann's book "Tinseltown" gave plausible answer, but we'll never, ever know. I love that book... juicy, juicy, juicy and really informative about early Hollywood on the east and west coasts.

by Anonymousreply 3June 6, 2019 10:56 PM

This isn't a huge scandal or anything but I've always wondered what really happened between REM and Jefferson Holt to bring down that ironclad gagging order on all concerned.

by Anonymousreply 4June 6, 2019 10:57 PM

R4, what do you mean? He was fired because he was accused of sexual harassment/assault by one of the band's employees. Do you think there's more to it?

by Anonymousreply 5June 6, 2019 11:01 PM

Were Lucille Ball, Joan Crawford and Marilyn Monroe whores before they made the big time?

by Anonymousreply 8June 6, 2019 11:16 PM

R5. Its just weird. He was one of the best managers in the history of rock music. The fact that he was fired for anything is pretty extraordinary. After he was given the boot the band were ( according to someone who would know) desperate to talk about something. But were legally bound to keep their mouths shut as per his severance agreement. The harassment charges weren't technically charges because it was dealt with in house between the complainant and the band. He was fired with a pretty good deal and a legally binding gagging order preserving his reputation. Meaning, I assume, that he could have sued the band for unfair dismissal otherwise. They have kept entirely schtum even in close personal circles. Apparently If his name is mentioned these days they get very upset but still wont discuss it. Some have speculated that there was no harassment and it was something else involving finances. Peter Buck once said in an interview that it was worse than what people were suggesting. I WANNA KNOW.

Who did Lou Christie sleep with?

by Anonymousreply 14June 6, 2019 11:30 PM
William Mann's book "Tinseltown" gave plausible answer, but we'll never, ever know.

Actually, Sidney Kirkpatricks "A Cast of Killers" gives a far more credible explanation, and he brings the receipts. Plus - and this is key - the whole thing is based on an investigation that King Vidor did into the killing. Vidor was inspired by the razing of the bungalow court in 1966 where Taylor's bungalow had been. Vidor was able to interview, in 1966, many, many people who had been a part of the scandal or a part of Hollywood in 1922. That's invaluable. So Kirkpatrick tells the story of Vidor's investigation and his conclusions (which he never went further with, feeling it was cause too much hurt for one of the involved parties). Kirkpatrick backs it all up with research in the early 1980s.

by Anonymousreply 16June 6, 2019 11:46 PM

R9 I may have an answer for you, heresay but reliable.

A beloved member of their office staff took her own life a few months later.

It was worse than "harassment" would suggest. He was/is highly manipulative. "Angel in public, Devil at home" type. The band had been trying to get rid of him for a while but couldn't pin anything on him in a legal sense. He had an amazing contract.

Her health was fragile already and she didn't want to take an experienced lawyer to court. Which suited the band.

There was huge regret over that afterwards. I suspect the band wanted to express their anger at Holt. But you can't just accuse someone of causing a death.
Thelma Todd

Back in the 1980s, Los Angeles magazine had a series on unsolved Hollywood mysteries. The solution of Thomas Ince's murder was fascinating, but so was Thelma Todd's. The writer got the full story from Zazu Pitts' son. Zazu was Thelma's closest friend. It was an open secret in Hollywood, everyone knew the truth of what had happened, but there was too much danger for several important Hollywood studio types if it were to go to the courts. And it wasn't, strictly speaking, a murder. Thelma's cafe (the building) is still there in Malibu, and so are the steps she had to climb to her garage (where she actually died, and that isn't there anymore).
I think after he dies all the stories will come out. Creepy old fossil.

Natalie's younger sister Lana has said that she will not name him publicly until he's dead. How many actor/producers are still living who would've been old enough to have raped the then 17 yr old Natalie in 1955 ?

It's Kirk.

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2019 12:20 AM

How exactly did Marilyn die?

by Anonymousreply 26June 7, 2019 12:21 AM

R16, I read “A Cast of Killers,” “Tinseltown,” and a third one whose name I can’t recall but which pinned the murder on one of Mabel Normand’s drug dealers.

Like JonBenet, all three had plausible arguments. I tend to lean toward Tinseltown’s conclusion. Only because I could 100% believe a studio would stoop low enough to spin a murder to destroy an innocent star whose mother was making her more trouble than she was worth. I also was fascinated by the political/economic/moral majority pressures being faced by the studios of the time.

by Anonymousreply 27June 7, 2019 12:23 AM

Well Christina is still alive. Has anybody asked her?

by Anonymousreply 28June 7, 2019 12:24 AM

Third book in the Taylor murder: “A Deed of Death” by Robert Giroux.

by Anonymousreply 29June 7, 2019 12:27 AM

I didn't read the book by Robert Giroux (it's called "A Deed of Death"), nor the fourth one on the case, "Loonies in Hollywood," but I did read Tinseltown. It read like more of a novel to me, rather than anything reality-based. A Cast of Killers is very carefully laid out, and the conclusions that Vidor drew are backed up either with interviews or with actual evidence.

About Thomas H. Ince's untimely and surprise death at age 42 in 1924

I'd like to accept he died from natural causes, but unresolved to me are:

- that Chaplin denied being on the [italic]Oneida[/italic] yacht where Thomas Ince was stricken, yet his chauffeur Toraichi Kono asserted he saw blood on Ince's head as he was carried off the dock;

- why Louella Parsons shortly had a lifetime contract with Hearst newspapers.

R16, Just read the preview on Goodreads of "A Cast of Killers." Did you notice the comment re the deceased possession in his library of a book by Aleiser Crowley? He'd stashed a love letter inside of it. Curious.

Also why did the former director have a collection of hundreds of "frilly pink panties, each with a different set of initials?" How about his many porn pictures of his countless lovers? Didn't quite explain if he was also in the photos, and if so who was the photographer?

Alludes to his cache of drugs bought in China Town. Didn't realize drugs were so prevalent back then in Hollywood. What were they? Opium? Did the stars indulge too?

Well, she's dead of gunshot wounds, so I'd say yes.

The police said it was a crazy homeless guy whom they killed. But the police's story isn't fully supported by the known facts and initial press coverage. There are still lots and lots of rumors.

by Anonymousreply 57June 8, 2019 12:04 AM

R57, I should have elaborated. I wonder if she had been the specific target of a planned murder.

Weird stuff.

by Anonymousreply 58June 8, 2019 1:53 AM

R58, Yes Chasen was specifically targeted and it was very obviously a pro hit by a hired foreign agent. There was a very extensive DL thread on her murder a few years back and I added a lot of info taken directly from extremely insightful comments of local insiders as to the motive.

Remember there was supposed to be a movie of the investigation but the writer/director was repeatedly threatened. Financing & sources of info closed ranks. Too many powerful people involved, and the film would reveal way too many secrets big players didn't want exposed of how Hollywood really operates.

Whatever happened to that little French girl who lost her mind and ran screaming from the yacht, after presumably being gang raped by the crew, mentioned by Marion Davies in "The Times We Had"?

Why was director Peter Bogdanovich convinced someone had killed River Phoenix out of jealousy? And whatever happened to the lost footage of "Dark Blood"?

Then research what movie staring Cher that didn't make as much $$$ as expected but had a co-star of a pretty young woman with a BF. Look at Ronni Chasen's involvement ie was she just doing PR, her friendship with the actress, promises made and agreements assumed but broken to certain Russian powerful. That will be a good start for you.

"Didn't realize drugs were so prevalent back then in Hollywood. What were they? Opium? Did the stars indulge too? "

Oh yes! Cocaine, opium in its various forms, marijuana, and alcohol were all huge on the Hollywood party circuit, which was at its height during the 1920s.

Opiates were only declared a controlled substance in 1923, and you could still get cocaine with a doctor's prescription. Alcohol was illegal, of course, but nobody in Hollywood cared about that. There were several Hollywood scandals related to drug and alcohol use, including the Fatty Arbuckle trials and the death of Mary Pickford's brother, the studio's attempts to clean up Hollywood's image eventually resulted in The Hayes Code and voluntary censorship of movie content. And in perfecting the art of hushing things up.
About Thomas H. Ince's untimely and surprise death at age 42 in 1924. I'd like to accept he died from natural causes, but unresolved to me are:

According to the LA Magazine article, which researched Ince's death and other mysteries, what happened was this: Hearst broke in on Marion Davies fucking Charlie Chaplin. He was followed immediately by Ince and one or two others. Hearst pulled out a gun to threaten Chaplin (not seriously planning to shoot him), Marion grabbed the gun away from him, and she accidentally shot Ince. Hearst went into power mode, directly what would happen. Everyone was well-paid for maintaining the myth of what happened, especially Hedda, who got her Hollywood career out of it. When most of Hollywood (especially Ince's wife) wanted further investigation, Hearst himself let the word get out that he had shot Ince accidentally. His point was to protect Marion Davies. He knew he had the power to keep it from getting anywhere near a trial, but Marion didn't. Her subsequent descent into alcoholism was fed in part by her guilt over having accidentally killed Thomas Ince.

This was in the early 1980s. It was Zazu Pitts' son who spilled the beans on exactly what happened to Thelma Todd, but I can't remember who his source or sources were for the Thomas Ince story.

Not on the street, but in the parking lot where she and her friend, James Kiernan, had parked. He was shot as well but did not die immediately as Colby did. Kiernan was able to describe the shooting to police before he later died of his wounds. He said that he did not recognize the two men who shot them, and that the shooting had occurred without warning, reason or provocation. No attempt was made to rob them.

Barbara Colby was separated from her husband at the time, Bob Levitt, who was Ethel Merman's son. Merman and Colby were very close, and Ethel was devastated by Colby's death.

But if she had a lobotomy, she got through it and came out at a very high level of functioning. Something was going on, but was it really lobotomy? Dennis Day was an original Mouseketeer whose body was identified just last week as the body found in his own home. No lobotomy for Frances.....made up by William Arnold for his book SHADOWLAND.... The case was sad enough. People who had the surgery rarely made a recovery to live a normal life - Frances Farmer was an alcoholic and could be a mean lady, but she also was on television live six days a week, did a lot of personal appearances, and did plays in Indy and at Purdue University.

No way a lobotomized person could do that. She had a strange way of talking and was reserved.....but William Arnold lied to sell books.

Not by your post it wasn't. Officially it's still open. Allegedly Roland West confessed on his death bed back in 1952 that he had killed her but not intentionally. She got home very late, later than she had told him she would be; the two had a horrible fight that became physical and he beat the shit out of her. He was so mad that he didn't want her in the apartment (that) the two shared and he threw her out after the beating. She went to the garage to stay the night in her car and turned over the engine for heat. West locked her in so that she wouldn't bang on the doors and windows any longer and she asphyxiated .

I still wonder about the very short marriage of Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney. Was it failed beard arrangement?

by Anonymousreply 120June 11, 2019 10:20 PM

R118 is pretty close to the truth as related by Thelma's best friend, Zasu Pitts. Thelma had been at a party that (Saturday) night, without Roland West. When they got back, there was indeed a fight over the fact that she had been partying so much. Thelma told him she was also invited to another afternoon party on Sunday, and "maybe I'll just go ahead and go to it now." She went up the steps and opened the garage door and got into her car and started it. She was drunk, and so was West. He followed her up the stairs, and shut the garage door to stop her from leaving. Then he went back down to their apartments above the cafe and went to sleep. Thelma, being drunk, was overcome almost immediately by the fumes and was too out of it to turn the car off and get out and open the door.

Roland was horrified when he discovered her dead the next morning. He immediately called Nicholas Schenck, the head of Loew's (which owned MGM, where West was under contract. West wanted to call the cops, but he knew far too much about dirty studio dealings in Caliente (Mexico) and West and Louis B Mayer couldn't allow him to talk to cops or risk him being called to testify in a trial, so they maneuvered the situation to protect him.

Unexplained was the fact that someone showed up several times on Sunday, dressed in Thelma's same dress from Saturday and driving her roadster - at a Christmas tree lot, a malt stand, and called the woman who was throwing the party. (Thelma's body wasn't officially "discovered" till Monday morning). There were rumors that Schenck and Mayer enlisted West's ex-wife, Jewel Carmen, who resembled Thelma (and in fact, lived further up the hill from them) to impersonate her, but this was never more than conjecture.

Picture is of Jewel Carmen

Jackie Coogan's participation in the San Jose lynchings.

by Anonymousreply 126June 11, 2019 10:30 PM

Not really vintage gossip, but there are theories that Marlon Brando may have been Courtney Love's grandfather.

by Anonymousreply 127June 11, 2019 10:33 PM

R128 In 1933, Brooke Hart, a friend of Coogan's was kidnapped for ransom. Hart's family owned a very popular department store in San Jose and people loved the Hart family. Hart's body was found and two men were arrested and a mob overtook the jail and got the men out. The men were lynched across the street. Coogan was rumored to have been involved and supposedly prepared a noose.

Virginia Rappe didn't die of a septic abortion, or of a bladder that was perforated during an abortion.

If she'd really had an abortion, and if something had been punctured, she wouldn't have been out attending parties and meeting fading fat movie stars! She'd have been in the fucking hospital!

by Anonymousreply 130June 11, 2019 11:41 PM

I read a book about the lynchings, r129, and it didn't say anything about any involvement with Jackie Coogan.

Or in her case, in the hospital, fucking. Virginia Rappe was a whore and everyone knew it. Fatty had nothing to do with her death. But Bambina Maude Delmont did.

Everybody at DL knows Dorothy Kilgallen got too close in the JFK case and that's why she was offed.

R133, Info on Bambina Maude Delmont please.

by Anonymousreply 135June 12, 2019 12:07 AM

R131 Historians and others have argued about whether Coogan participated in the lynch mob or not. The media did put smudges on the faces of people photographed at the lynchings in order to protect the identities of those involved.

Thanks, R118. I pasted the incorrect article.

by Anonymousreply 138June 12, 2019 2:43 AM

Fatty literally fucked the piss out of Rappe.

I'd still be the first one to buy a ticket for Chris Christie's one man show: Whale of a Guy: The Fatty Arbuckle Story.

by Anonymousreply 139June 12, 2019 2:45 AM

R139, fuck you. Arbuckle was exonerated, and with the apologies of the judge for the frame that was the indictment. You're full of shit.

Who killed Karyn Kupcinet?

Was it her boyfriend? Or Hope Lange's weird brother? Or an unknown intruder? Or was it just a bizarre mishap?

I know it’s technically solved but I’d love to know more about the murder of Mickey Rooney’s wife.

There’s not much info about it online but there are some interesting connections between her lover who killed her & then himself and the Marković affair.

by Anonymousreply 148June 13, 2019 5:18 AM

R148 Delon is such a right wing sleaze bag. Always feel like showering, not in a good way, after watching him.

by Anonymousreply 150June 13, 2019 5:34 AM

Karyn Kupcinet's boyfriend - whom her parents always thought had killed her, though there was zero evidence that he had, was actor Andrew Prine, who had a bit of a career in the late 60s and 70s, and showed off his enormous cock in one of those Playgirl (or was it Cosmo?) centerfolds in the mid-1970s.
