Which of these two magician films released the same year was better?

The Prestige is the better film, but I have fonder memories of The Illusionist: I saw it in Istanbul and half-way through the film -- right when Jessica Biel races off on the horse -- the film stopped, the lights went up, and everybody went to the lobby to smoke a cigarette!

No one knew what the hell was going on in The Prestige. Was it magic? Science fiction? Very confusing which is why it tanked.

I liked both. I think The Prestige was better, but the one that had the Phillip Glass soundtrack had the better score -- I think that was The Illusionist.

I really enjoyed the Illusionist. I much preferred it over The Prestige.

The Illutionist would have been better if anyone but Jessica Biel played that part.

The Prestige. Bowie as Tesla.

The Prestige was actually a good movie, and poses quite a profound question about the sacrifices art (in this case, the magician's art) demands.
I still wonder at the strange synchronicity of two major movies about 19th-century magicians being released in the same year. I mean, how many movies on that subject has Hollywood released in total in its 100 years of existence?

I think it depends on which one you saw first. In my case it was The Illusionist, so when I saw The Prestige, it more of the same. That and I sometimes find Hugh Jackman a bit much. Bale was the best thing in that film.
I thought The Illusionist was one of the rare instances where Biel gave a decent performance.
