$18 million in one day. The second highest Christmas Day gross of all time. Wonka is doing well too with over $250 worldwide since Dec 15 opening. This is good news for musicals, Fantasia, and Chalamet.

R7 Money doesn’t give a fuck what race produces it. We may be only 14% of a population but I would guess somewhere like 30% of the movie going public. If you knew anything about demographics and the aging white population you would understand what I am talking about. But you probably just want to be stubbornly racist so likely a lost cause.

Color Purple audience being majority black isn't that surprising. But, it's not like it's THAT specifically a black cultural thing. People generally know The Color Purple. It had a great opening day. It's not crazy to ask if it momentum can be sustained. This coming weekend will be huge - a three-day holiday weekend - and I assume it will do good numbers. It's really the weekend AFTER that where we can start to see what sort of momentum it can sustain. And "momentum" usually doesn't mean not dropping at the box office, but about how much it drops - essentially, "drops" can be good if their beating expectations.

There's a narrative to this movie that's based in race, that "we need more all-black movies!". I don't know if it's the media or just people like Oprah. But aside from a couple of chance hits, the black-only film is not going to be bankable due to it being all black casted. But that's not stopping the push.
That's where the debate is coming from in al the Color Purple talk. They're remaking films aimed solely at black audiences. New "horror" films going out of their way to cast only black characters/actors. Yes, more black actors should be cast. So should more Hispanic/Latino and Native American actors. But the American black community is trained to be racist against white people in general, thus they see it completely natural to produce or support black only movies and isolate 50%-plus of their potential audience. And when they inevitably fail, it will be due to "racism". Rinse.....repeat......

Warner Bros.’ musical, The Color Purple, which was brilliant out of the gate on Christmas Day with an $18.15M gross, boosted by group sales, continues to fall, with Wednesday down 45% from Tuesday to $3.9M at 3,152. Running total through three days stands at $29M, about $10M behind Les Miserables at the same point in time back in 2012. That movie ended its domestic run at $148.8M.

Warner Bros./Amblin’s “The Color Purple” is fourth with an estimated $17.7 million 4-day total in its first weekend in theaters. Released on Christmas Day, the acclaimed Blitz Bazawule musical is estimated to gross just under $50 million domestic in its first week in theaters, though only time will tell whether its strong word-of-mouth will allow it to draw a significant number of moviegoers beyond its core Black, older-skewing audience.

The showbiz press is climbing all over themselves to smear Aquaman as a major flop, but they keep hedging on The Color Purple which has vastly underperformed with about 100% recognition by the public and all that diversity. They're terrorized and fearful about calling it a flop, while reporting the 3 holiday weekend films outgrossing it are all "underwhelming"?
See how that works?

Sunny will probably say she attended every matinee and evening show since it opened, and Sara will say she did the same thing, just to kiss their asses. Whoopi will say she held a private screening at her house for her family and friends this past week.
Then when the reality sets in by the end of this week, and it will be hard to deny its a flop, Sunny and Whoopi will ignore it - just as they ignored the failures of "Till" last year, and "West Side Story" the year before.

The second week of December, 'The View' kept pushing 'The Color Purple' (it was their last week of airing new shows). All Sara could do is keep repeating, "I'm hearing Oscar buzz" to everyone who stepped on stage. Of course, Hayes said the same thing last year when they were promoting the hell out of "Till" - every day she announced she was hearing "Oscar buzz" and we know how that worked out...

The Color Purple musical opened on Broadway over fifteen years ago, yet I've never heard any of the music. Usually a hit show has at least one song that becomes a hit, or even just familiar to the public because singers cover it, or sing it in the acts. There doesn't seem to be any song from TCP that can be used to sell the movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 1, 2024 5:53 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 1, 2024 6:08 PM |
I know they wanted to show a big box office on Christmas, but by giving away tickets and cooking the books they set themselves up for failure it if didn't take off. It's stale IP, and an all black musical on difficult subject matter is a turn off.
It shows though that these kinds of black female projects still have limited box office appeal. The Woman King also struggled to break even (if it even did) and did not do well overseas.

r159- "I'm Here" is a very popular song. It is often sung on American Idol and the like. Fantasia sang it on the Tony Awards too. The fact that you haven't heard any of the music is on you.

R159 The show opened in 2005. Diana Ross recorded the song "What About Love ?" from the Broadway musical for her 2007 CD "I Love You". I believe she released it as a single to AC radio, but nothing happened. It's not a great song by any means - it's rather dull and boring, never comes to life. However, I guess that's the song the producers tried to 'make happen'.

I'm a gay white long-time DLer and I went to see it yesterday. Theatre was pretty full; I'd say about 80% of the seats sold. Sadly, I was the only white person there. It's a great movie and I'm really irritated that so many here seem to want to tear it down because of very transparent reasons. Reporting the box office honestly is one thing; gleefully hoping it will fail because it doesn't star an all white cast is another.

Perhaps the movie-going public, most of whom are not black, are just exhausted by black celebrities.... RICH AND FAMOUS black celebrities, telling them that they're racists and don't want to pay black people. Maybe the general public in America are just exhausted by American black people in general, being told for years that if you're not black, you are inherently a racist. That non-black people "stole" everything from blacks, that blacks are always the most marginalized victims, the most mistreated people, that they are just barely above being slaves. All while spewing this bile as famous, and lauded people while whites, Asians, Hispanics and other non-black people have no recourse to respond other than avoiding their films and products.
Maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe the long awaited, well-deserved rejection and backlash has finally begun.

A lot of missteps in this version. Too many cuts away from the dancers. The men are all one-dimensional. The "What About Love" scene is so odd, filmed like a 30's Fred Astaire number. But when it comes down to it, it's still an affecting story. Fantasia was excellent.
| by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 2, 2024 5:34 PM |
I think people are tired of 'prestige' films altogether (or any movie where the underlying message of the marketing is you "should" want to see the film). Same thing is happening to other films, notably Maestro (boring) or Till (overwrought). Inflation is insane, including the movies, and no one wants to go to the theater and spend a lot of money on something that isn't altogether enjoyable.
There are so few mainstream movies made today that include a well-rounded plot. Everything is a gimmick. It's getting old.

I'm curious why Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson was not cast as Shug Avery in this ? And if they really want to sell tickets - why did they not cast Beyonce as Shug Avery ?
In 1985, there was a list a mile long of singers / actresses whom Spielberg wanted to cast as 'Shug'. Diana Ross was at the very top of the list - however, she wanted more screen time so she could get 'top-billing above the title'. Spielberg couldn't do it. He offered it to Tina Turner - who said 'she already lived that story'. He offered it to Diahann Carroll, but she was busy filming 'Dynasty'. He offered it to Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, and Patti LaBelle - each actress found the story 'too depressing'. He settled on Margaret Avery who played the role to perfection.
The role of Shug Avery is rather important to the story - TPH isn't the actress to fill that importance.

Movieweb discusses whether the movie is projected to be profitable based on more recent box office returns.
[quote] The heavily front-loaded nature of the box office performance of The Color Purple is related to a pronounced lack of diversity within the demographic of the film’s audience, which has become very polarized, even though audiences of all demographics have expressed seemingly universal admiration for the movie along with surpassing the original 1985 film's Rotten Tomatoes score.
[quote] While approximately sixty-five percent of the film’s current audience is Black, according to Deadline, less than twenty percent of the audience is white, while Hispanic viewers only represent slightly more than ten percent of the film’s audience. In contrast, the Broadway musical on which the film is based became a hit on Broadway, where the musical debuted in 2005, precisely because its audience was virtually evenly divided between Black and white patrons, according to Today.
[quote] This lack of diversity is also reflected in the film’s seeming lack of international appeal. While The Color Purple has yet to be released overseas, the film seems destined to receive a tepid reception, much like what happened with the 1985 film, which grossed approximately $94 million at the domestic box office but only slightly more than $4 million overseas.
[quote] The box-office failure of The Color Purple, which will hopefully avoid being one of the biggest box-office bombs of 2023, has been overshadowed by the aura of the film's spectacular opening, creating a media and public perception that the film is a hit.

It's a very good film, R253. While some of the musical numbers could have used a bit more dynamic cinematography, the songs don't bog down the story or seem out of place. The acting by all is superb; rely, the cast is fantastic. The story itself is still a downer--there's no way to lighten it up--but it's a very well made film. I'm disappointed that it's not performing better at the box office because it deserves more.

Henson has single-handedly torpedoed any chances for 'TCP' to be a major contender at the Oscars. Oprah must be so proud of her.
After the Oscar season, she will be joining the unemployment line with Mo'Nique. And like Mo'Nique, she will be a future guest on 'The View' being schooled by Whoopi, trying to resurrect her career.

It grossed $4.7m this weekend for a total of $54.6m (minus $15m for the opening day tickets WB bought and tried to pass off as revenue).
And the last thing Danielle Brooks should be complaining about is craft services.

I'm an hour in and I can't take any more. The songs are awful and they just stop the action dead instead of enhancing the story. Fantasia is not very good. I would have rather seen the actress who plays Young Celie do the role for the whole film. The way it's edited is like a music video and all dramatic thrust and building to any kind of a moment is totally undone in favor of the anemic songs.
And mostly- it's what I imagine having a two hour conversation with Teacake to be like.

Wow, that article really does her no favors. She's bitching about getting paid $150K for Benjamin Button because she was "third billed." Bitch, you were a supporting character and no one ever heard of you. That's pretty good money. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. She sounds like a nightmare to work with, which is a shame, because I do enjoy her. I worked on recutting a movie she did which was a total mess (nothing to do with her). We basically took the film from unreleasable to getting a limited theatrical for it with a distributor. I met her at the premiere and she was actually quite lovely and made a point to introduce herself, so something tells me this attitude is recent, perhaps around the time Empire made her think she was a household name.

The Color Purple was #12 yesterday, according to Box Office Mojo. it says 11, but they also don't have any reporting on the list for Mean Girls at all, which would bump everyone down a slot. TCP grossed $400,000 on Friday, which means it's likely in for a $1.3m gross for the 4-day holiday weekend. It also dropped about 1500 screens this weekend. At this point, it will probably top out somewhere between $63-$65m NA gross (and $48-$50m if you subtract the tickets WB bought on the first day).

Can a movie be "successful" without being profitable? Probably not from the perspective of the studios, but how about more broadly - how it's written about, talked about. Let's say a studio sank $300 million into some insane production budget plus marketing costs. The movie goes on to make $200 million in domestic box office - which shows that a LOT of people went to see the movie, but overall it didn't make the money back. Would it be a failure?

It's always about the $. $200M is a flop on a $300M production. $300M is considered a 'break even'. $300,000,000.01 is a hit.

Also and they should really hire me or have me write a book or something. A generation has grown up with streaming that processes new media rather differently. It’s hard to explain but in a way we have all been affected by it. There is so much content out now. And it’s not so much that audiences don’t plan to see new releases they just don’t feel the urgency. You can discover something new, cool, poignant, maybe even cheesing yet entertaining that came out in 2020. Barbie and Oppenheimer were huge successes not only because they are very well made films but also because they are nothing else that comes out in any season of the year. The studios are going to have to reworked their business models. Ultimately they may have to function like networks via the traditional tv model. Create a catalogue of prefunded films that makes up the content of a streaming site and then perhaps 1-2 big releases that get the traditional theater treatment, imax, is the big “experience. “

R293, I'd also add a case like Killers of the Flower Moon, which Apple released theatrically and it still made decent money ($150 million worldwide), but was never going to recoup its ridiculously astronomical budget in theaters. But Apple made the movie to establish the company as a streamer that's more hospitable to auteurs than Netflix and to drive people toward its service, so if it achieves that, the company will consider it a worthwhile investment.

Today on THE VIEW, actor Colman Domingo was the guest. He was there to promote 'Rustin' (let's not forget - Oscar nominations are being taken now) and Sunny mentioned he's also in 'The Color Purple'. As the segment closed, Whoopi reminded the audiences that "Rustin" is available on Netflix, and "The Color Purple" is in theaters EVERYWHERE!
Does anyone have the heart to tell her it's barely playing anywhere ? It has disappeared faster than George Santos.
And I'll ask again - is it in Whoopi's contract that every damn celebrity who sits at the table has to pay homage and kiss ass to Whoopi, and they have to tell her how much they love her and what an inspiration she is to them ? Domingo led the audience (and the cohosts) into a rousing standing ovation, to 'thank' Whoopi for the success in his life. Geez...

| by Anonymous | reply 310 | January 15, 2024 4:52 PM |
Do you know who the math IS mathing for? Leonardo DiCaprio.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" had a production cost (not including promotion) of $200 million dollars.
Of the $200 million cost, $40 million went to DiCaprio for his acting services.
That movie would need to make anywhere from $500 million to $600 million to break even in its theatrical run, according to Movieweb.com. The current world wide box office for the film is about $156 million. It is NOT a hit based on its theatrical run, but:
[quote] If Killers of the Flower Moon had been financed by distributor Paramount Pictures instead of by Apple, Killers of the Flower Moon would be on pace to become one of the biggest box office flops of both 2023 and recent history.
[quote] For Apple, Killers of the Flower Moon essentially represents a form of advertising, a marketing expense, with which Apple can drive people toward its ecosystem, specifically the streaming service Apple TV+, where the film will presumably be available for viewing following the exclusive theatrical window.
[quote] By this calculation, if the final box office gross for Killers of the Flower Moon merely surpasses the film’s marketing cost, the film will, according to industry experts, almost certainly be viewed as being a success by Apple, especially if the film wins Oscar gold.
So The Color Purple really needed a deep pocket sugar daddy like Apple, not Oprah.

R314 But it can fathom that someone like Whoopi is over-rated, and these celebrities play right into her demand for attention, lest we forget she was once an Oscar winner a very long time ago.

Wow, the blatant and oblivious racism is mighty strong in this thread. I just saw the film yesterday and I loved it. It had most of the parts I loved from the first film, the costumes were fabulous, the songs were original and very catchy and I thought Fantasia made a much better Ms. Celie than Whoopi did.

Nobody used Ms. until the 1960s.
Even then, just the feminists did until the '80s or '90s.

The fact is that Jennifer Hudson has been making films for 17 years now. After Dreamgirls, she's appeared in exactly ONE hit film (Sex and the City) which had nothing to do with her making it a hit. She's starred in countless films that have all flopped. Her popularity is wildly overestimated.
| by Anonymous | reply 366 | January 18, 2024 3:38 PM |
R366 That's the problem with so many actors and actresses after their first (surprise) Oscar win - the can't go on to make another hit movie. Back in the 'old days', when the Academy was more selective when detecting a talented actor, the new winner could be counted on to churn out more hits (Barbra Streisand, I'm looking at you).
| by Anonymous | reply 367 | January 18, 2024 6:33 PM |
Whoopi was the best thing about the original TCP. Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy failed at making a good script. He made it too comedic so that white people would feel comfortable watching the movie. As uneven as it was, Whoopi was magnificent.

R368 She was outstanding, but so was the rest of the cast. Oprah and Glover excelled in their roles, as well as the actresses who played the younger girls in the beginning of the movie.

Maybe it didn’t need a remake. It’s available for streaming now but it costs $20USD.
| by Anonymous | reply 371 | January 18, 2024 7:47 PM |
I think the popularity of the original “The Color Purple” was in large part due to the fact that it was one of the first mainstream prestige movies, directed by Spielberg no less, that seriously delved into the inner lives of Black people - and that Whoopi, Danny and Oprah gave star-making performances in it. Brokeback Mountain did the same thing 20 years later for gay men (and Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal).
The new version faces all the same challenges that the old version did (will White people go see it? Will the focus on the brutal misogyny and lesbian love that Celie experiences turn off more socially conservative Black people?) as well as some new ones (a lot of people find “serious” musicals inherently cringey, especially on film, and a lot of Black people now don’t want to watch stories about the bad old days and the generational trauma they caused). I’m not surprised it didn’t do well.
I don’t think any of the leads would have commanded big paycheques (given they couldn’t even get drivers and their own dressing rooms on set initially). I’m baffled how a straightforward musical about poor Black people in rural Georgia cost $100 million to make?
| by Anonymous | reply 372 | January 18, 2024 8:51 PM |
By comparison, the 1985 version had a budget of $15 million, which would be around $43 million today.

A period musical with themes of incest and lesbianism was always going to bomb.
| by Anonymous | reply 393 | January 21, 2024 7:32 PM |
The fact that anyone thought The Color Purple needed musical treatment in the first place is laughable to me. It is not a story that works as a musical, and the over-the-top musical numbers like this are an embarrassment to Walker's novel. Tacky, low-brow garbage (as is the case with the majority of musical adaptations of anything).
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 394 | January 21, 2024 7:34 PM |
The trailer was awful and the poster was worse. The musical itself has no catchy songs and isn't that popular. The subject matter is depressing. The two most famous people involved were the producers, but Spielberg isn't a major draw for moviegoers anymore, and Oprah probably never was.
Warner Brothers kept reviews under wraps for too long, making people assume it was a bomb. When the reviews were good but not great, it still wasn't enough to push people who might be on the fence to see it.

Well, we all saw it on Broadway, both the original and the brilliant revival, and know how powerful it is. Cynthia Erivo gave one of the single best performances I’ve ever seen on stage. It was wildly good.
The real question is, after having seen Fantasia and Danielle Brooks perform these roles on stage, why would we need to see them again on film?

It's laughable (or, infuriating) the studio and EPs are trying to blame Taraji for the film's failure. Taraji could have sung its praises to the hilt and the result would have been the same. The brass do not want to admit that they made a poor decision in picking this material so they blame Taraji for not staying in her lane. How ironic, given the source material.

R367 I think you miss a crucial factor. It is still extremely hard to win an Oscar. It’s just there over 100% more films released today than 1976. Also more studios and platforms to choose from. Audiences no longer use the Oscars as a litmus test of high art.

| by Anonymous | reply 406 | January 22, 2024 3:37 PM |
R403 what lane. The job of mainstream actor is to promote a film in post production. I mean one doesn’t have to but then one shouldn’t expect to make 10 mil a film. This is one of the biggest PR blunders of a mainstream actor I’ve seen in sometime. Oprah may have paid her to get her to shut up this season but her roles will be limited in the future.
| by Anonymous | reply 407 | January 22, 2024 3:39 PM |
White actors too have been treated like B listers, from the stories my friends tell me, on sets because of increasing inflation cost and making up for how much promotion costs nowadays. They are dumb enough to talk about it while promoting the film. People want to hear victims of rape or discrimination. Now Hollywood stars being treated as 2nd class citizens. And the fact that she is black, because society is racist as fuck, it reads even worst for the average white cunt. Because it’s like you are a multimillionaire actor why are you still complaining.

American Fiction was great. It's essentially the same premise as Spike Lee's Bamboozled but involving books instead of television. Unlike Bamboozled, there's a nice family drama underneath. Great performances all around, and very funny. Also major Sideways vibes with the angsty, floundering writer, jaunty jazz interludes, beautiful scenery, and the characters drinking a lot.

I didn't think American Fiction was trying to have "teeth" - the main plot was fairly comedic and I don't think it presented itself like it was doing something brand new. It's been done before - exploring the issue of pandering or "selling out" (depending on who you ask) to gain success or toiling away on work the artist thinks is of higher quality but not having as much success.

Yes. His storyline was completely useless and stopped the film cold every time he appeared. Tracee Ellis Ross and Jeffrey Wright had so much chemistry together. Her character was complex and three dimensional and you could see their whole relationship in just that one brief scene. It was infinitely more interesting than some tired trope of a black man coming out as gay after being on the downlow. Did Patrik Polk do an uncredited rewrite?
One of the many problems this overrated tripe had.

R443, I agree that it would have been great if Tracee-Ellis Ross stuck around, and that a gay man coming out isn't breaking any new ground. But, Cliff's story was a tertiary arc, and I thought they cut Cliff off at the right point so that the character didn't disrupt the movie in a negative way. He was largely comic relief, but had a few tender lines to his brother too. He's also there to illustrate the family's way of disengagement learned from their father.
