I grew up watching Studio Ghibli movies and love them. Unfortunately, not many Americans are familiar with the great filmmaking techniques of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
Does DL like Ghibli movies? If so, which is/are your favorites, and why?

It took me a week to get over Grave of the Fireflies but my God what a classic.

R1 It is not a film for kids. In my opinion, the greatest animated film ever made.
And yes, it is a FILM

The English dub for Spirited Away had DL fav Suzanne Pleshette.

Law of Primacy implies I will always like Spirited Away since it’s the first I watched. I liked Howl’s Moving Castle too, but not as much. But then I stopped watching others.
Thanks for the reminder, OP… and the recommendation/heads up R1!

R6 Sure, it was included in the same box set as the others.

I'm not a huge anime fan so I've seen only three: I absolutely LOVED Howl's Moving Castle.
Thought Spirited Away was just OK.
Didn't manage to finish Grave of the Fireflies because of that obnoxious little sister character. That has to be the whiniest cunt to ever grace the silver screen.

Spirited Away had the most annoying English dub I’ve ever heard. I really just wanted Zen to die because she was such a screaming little whiner.

I liked the English dub of Spirited Away, it had a good cast- Pleshette, David Ogden Stiers, Jason Marsden, Jill Hennessy, etc.

R1 Grave of the fireflies had me crying. I thought of it for a long time after. Years. Great movie but I can’t watch that again. Too sad.

Is it possible to find the non-Disneyfied version of My Neighbor Totoro anywhere? I have wanted to see it but anytime I try to stream it’s the shit version with Dakota Fanning (I think). Is the non-dubbed version available in the U.S.?

R13 The non-dubbed version is on HBO Max.

I love how 2008's Ponyo isn't on the list. That and Porco Rosso are the stinkers, IMO.
Howell's, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Totoro are huge faves, but I voted for Kiki's Delivery Service because it deserves some love. Jiji is one of my favorite Ghibli characters.

I'll always be grateful to Fathom Events for showing Ghibli films year after year, both the dubbed and subtitled versions. That's where I discovered them and otherwise never would have seen these beauties up on the big screen.

Spirited Away is fantastic, it's usually the fan favorite and it won multiple awards. It was also my first Ghibli film. I love Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service, in that order. Princess Mononoke is also very good.
I've seen almost all of them. Not mentioned:
The Cat Returns (sequel to Whisper of the Heart)
Only Yesterday
Arrietty (charming!)
From Up on Poppy Hill (loved)
The Wind Rises (great)
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (ok, animation style is a little different, watercolor-ish, but the story is great)
When Marnie Was There (one of the saddest, I really love it- I think it reads as LGBTQ)
Ocean Waves (kind of a dud)
-I agree that Porco Rosso and Ponyon aren't that great.
I haven't been able to sit through Earthsea or Nausicaa yet. I thought Grave of the Fireflies was interesting for its history but it's a real bummer.

Castle in the Sky was the first, and a little bumpy, but it was wonderful.
