I'm not R5, but Steven was mentally ill and deep in the closet. He had also stolen her stuffed animal during the course of the show. She had been looking for it the whole time.
Irene was kind of crazy herself, as well as manipulative. She was leaving the house because she claimed she had Lyme Disease, but Steven claimed she was lying about it just to get off the show.
As a parting dig at Steven (as you can see in the video), she called him gay.
At the time, he was pissed at her for saying that because she was right. But he was in denial.
So he retrieved the stuffed animal that he stole from her, and threw it in the water. Then he ran after her car, just so he could slap her in the face.
He was a very disturbed individual.
