San Diego versus Los Angeles

Anyone on here live in San Diego? Is it hotter (temperature wise) than LA? How does it compare to LA?

I spent most of my growing up years (I'm 53) in San Diego until I was 18 - various parts from beach to inland. I also lived in Los Angeles for 3 years (2004-2007). Since it was so long ago and global warming really has changed the climate, I'm not sure I'm qualified to address your question, but it really boils down to WHERE in San Diego you want to live.

R1 is correct.

San Diego is nice, but it’s NOT LA, and that could be a good or bad thing, depend on your lifestyle.

Generally, it’s pretty conservative, and then it’s also a college town.

I’d love there if I were trying to bang college students and party a LOT, or if I were starting a family, & had a solid income of over 200K or preferably more, annually.

There’s also a military base nearby, so do with that what you will.

Personally, I would not choose San Diego over LA.

If you want to live in a beach town, there are plenty of beaches north of Orange County.

Even though it's further south, I think SD is cooler and has better weather than LA.

The inland areas will feel hotter and more stifling. Beach areas will have nicer temperatures, but will be more expensive, of course. (Talking about SD.)

Also, I'm sure this probably hasn't changed much, but there is this thing called "June gloom" that happens in the mornings throughout the summer where the coast is socked in with fog but it burns off by noon-1pm. Again, I haven't lived there for some time, but I think that's still relevant. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

San Diego is much smaller and mellower. Things are a bit slower and calmer there. It's quite a small city.

Grew up in LA, but have tons of family in SD. (My mom lives right near USD currently.)

SD is definitely milder weather wise. Even though it's a big-ish city, it has a small town feel to. Much more conservative. Especially compared to LA>

I was usually bored when I visited there in my 20s. Might think differently now that I'm in my 40s.

My husband and I moved there in 2014, after falling in love with it on a spontaneous trip a few years earlier. We were eager to get out of NYC and San Diego was at the top of our list.

It was nice for the first year. But was hard to make friends, people were very flaky (probably didn't help that we are middle aged). It had a "not ready for prime time feel". The homeless problem was worse than anything we'd experienced in NYC. Housing is expensive yet salaries were lower compared to what we were used to.

We got bored after two years and moved back to NYC.

I'm flying out next week to check out San Diego for a possible job opportunity. Thanks for the feedback.

OP, the weather is almost always perfect, and San Diego has its own Little Italy.

Beaches in LA are far superior to any SD beach. The LA beaches are more fun, have more sand, are larger and wider, and the parking is much easier and cheaper. Getting a place to park even remotely near the beach on a busy day is virtually impossible from SD north to Oceanside. The beaches are narrow, many have cliffs, boulders and rocks. Sometimes the boulders let loose and kill you. The sand is akin to dirt, and gross.

Which beach in LA is so good? Zuma? I agree that SD beaches have hard sand and parking issues, but I don't think LA beaches are so great, either.

San Diego has 1.4 million people in the city proper; it’s not LA but it’s quite large.
