I miss those days lowkey.

People lined up for Goonies? They must have just gotten electricity in that hick shithole.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 23, 2023 3:02 AM |
"Goonies," an event? And yeah, "lowkey"?
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 23, 2023 3:03 AM |
R3, why did you like your own post?
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 23, 2023 3:04 AM |
I remember my first job as a 15 year old in 1975 working the counter at a luncheonette. There was the neighborhood movie theater across the street all summer playing Jaws. Now that was an event.
I also remember May 1999 when the Star Wars Episode One Phantom Menace was released. Waiting in line with the crowd at the Ziegfeld Theater to see it was an big deal. So was the challenge of getting snacks and drinks at the concession stand and making it back to your seat before the movie started.

You secretly miss those days?
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 23, 2023 3:21 AM |
Yes, I miss those days and that pastime very much. My movie-going friend is dead now and the whole thing — popcorn, Good & Plenty — has never been the same.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 23, 2023 3:22 AM |
Ummm Goonies was a hit retard.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 23, 2023 3:39 AM |
The last event movie I remember was the first Michael Keaton Batman when I was in high school. You had to see that on opening weekend. Soon after that, Blockbuster became more prevalent and there wasn't the same sense of urgency to see movies right away.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 23, 2023 3:50 AM |
I remember those times. I also worked at our little local theater during those times. Jesus H. Christ. In our area, it had the ability to bring out the worst in people. The last movie for which I stood in line was "Star Trek: First Contact". Not long after, I pretty much gave up on cinema, radio, television and rarely watch or listen to anything current.

I remember the queues for films like Star Wars in the late seventies/eighties when I was a kid. Very exciting at the time.
Those times are long gone now.

R11 must have been in a coma when Titanic came out
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 23, 2023 4:06 AM |
We had event movies in 2023: Oppenheimer, Barbie.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 23, 2023 4:06 AM |
R16 correct. Barbie shouldn’t have been though.

My Dad took my brother and me to see The Poseidon Adventure at The Albee opposite Fountain Square in Downtown Cincinnati. It was definitely an event. My Dad was averse to those sorts of things, but he was dying to take us to a real movie palace before they went extinct, and I'm so grateful that he did. The building was razed not that long after, but I experienced a great movie in the setting which it deserved. Years later, I took myself to see Alien at the Valley Theatre in Roselawn, and I was the only white guy I could observe in a black audience: amazing, with authentic screams and talkback to the screen. A real immersive experience that I treasure to this day.

Titanic opened at $28M. Hardly an event.

[quote] Titanic opened at $28M. Hardly an event.
That's not really true. It was on about 1000 fewer screens its first weekend than the largest of blockbusters for 1997. It was grossing about 10K per screen and it shot up to $35m in its second weekend. It also stayed at #1 for 15 consecutive weeks. That film was most definitely an event.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 23, 2023 4:47 AM |
Cool R20. Titanic is also the 4th highest grossing film of all time with $2,264,743,305 in revenue so far.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 23, 2023 4:47 AM |
Scream 2 opened the weekend before Titanic with $32M. When I think of event movies, I'm thinking of people who want to see it immediately. Titanic just stuck around in theaters a long time because of repeat business from teen girls.

My friend Kate was an usherette, until the Ten Commandments opened! Her and the other girls at the theater were given slave costumes, some little tunic or something. The staff lost their minds and chased them around the theater! Even though Kate once shot a grizzly bear, she still feels the torment of that day!

Going to the movies WAS an event! I visited a few movie palaces with my grandma. We also went to Carol Lombard’s childhood home.

R24 that isn’t what an event film is. It’s not a film That opens strong but then falls off fast. An event film is a film That has legs and everyone is going to see. Titanic very much was that. You think Scream 2 was more of an event film because it opened with a higher number? Scream 2 went on to make $100 million domestically. Titanic made over $600 million domestically.

OP, did you miss Barbie? Oppenheimer?
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 23, 2023 1:41 PM |
R19
I saw one of the Star Wars prequels in Baltimore with similar demographics. The crowd went absolutely nuts when Yoda started with the fighting - it’s the only moment I remember from the movie and it was absolutely hilarious.

In 1973, “Last Tango in Paris” premiered in Boston by reserved seating only.

Those were the good old days.
Laura Ingalls Wilder felt that way too. Of course she didn't have movies. Her Pa would shoot the pig and blow up the bladder like a ballon and they would toss it back and forth.

I would say the Barbie Movie was a huge event. It's the first one I can remember like that since Covid. They hyped that movie up for a good month in about every sector of someone's day-to-day life as they could. People were chomping at the bit to finally see it when it opened.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 23, 2023 2:04 PM |
I don't think either were event movies, r27. I was just comparing their opening weekend, which is how I characterize event movies.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 23, 2023 2:08 PM |
But as far as slow burn movies, ( the kind that kind of come out of nowhere unexpectedly and that you have to go see again and drag a bunch of friends), I would say The Matrix and The Blair Witch Project were like that. Was it just me or did the original Matrix seem to just come out of nowhere for such a major blockbuster - there was very little hype before - then WHAM! It was the first time we really saw CGI technology used not to create fantastical worlds, but to heighten human capabilities. It seemed way ahead of its time when it came out. And Blair Witch project was the first to strike that faux documentary genre perfectly with its realistic first person narrative. I remember seeing it at the theatre and people really didn't know if it was real or not. They had newspaper clippings of the event in the lobby as if it actually happened.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 23, 2023 2:12 PM |
I remember The Sound of Music and Around the World in 80 Days being "event" movies. They were in 70 mm and we could only see them at the Clairidge Cinerama Theatre in Montclair, NJ.

Lmao Titanic made over $2 billion but it wasn’t an event

So go ahead.

I've stated my criteria for an event movie several times. If you have a different standard that you use, fine.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 23, 2023 4:55 PM |
Event movie openings went the way of economy air travel.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 23, 2023 4:59 PM |
I think you can make a distinction for this discussion between movies that were massively hyped before they opened - the Keaton Batman promotion was long, relentless and literally everywhere you looked - and others like Titanic that had more normal pre opening PR but then become massive hits because of audience response.
They are different kinds of events - one that you look forward to for weeks with a frenzied anticipation / the other a cultural moment you get caught up in as it is happening a bit more organically.

I attended a digital projection of Notorious some years ago. The machine froze at the end when Cary Grant is carrying Ingrid Bergman down the staircase. I started yelling at the screen “my god! Will they ever make it out?!?”
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 23, 2023 5:27 PM |
What are we talking about? There are still event movies. We just got through Barbenheimer! People made TV shirts for it!
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 23, 2023 5:30 PM |
Yeah, I would have conceded that there have been other event movies since Batman, had the person used an example other than Titanic.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 23, 2023 5:40 PM |
Keep fucking that chicken, R45. You're still wrong.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 23, 2023 6:05 PM |
I'm a millennial, so I remember standing in line for those mediocre Harry Potter films several years in a row. I enjoyed the hype surrounding the films much more than the actual movies.

[quote]We had event movies in 2023: Oppenheimer, Barbie.
Horseshit. Not one human being stood in line to see them. They opened on multiple screens per complex. Event films opened in very limited areas and at a single screen theaters. Star Wars opened on 32 screens country wide opening day. It opened more thru the summer but lines were around the block for months.
[quote]Titanic very much was that. You think Scream 2 was more of an event film because it opened with a higher number? Scream 2 went on to make $100 million domestically. Titanic made over $600 million domestically.
"Scream 2" running time was two hours. Theatres could schedule more shows than the three hour "Titanic" and being rated "R", Scream 2 had higher ticket prices, as unaccompanied children were allowed in "Titanic" at reduced prices.

Like the gays did with Mame in 1974. Oh, the gaggles that would descend on the box office of the mall theater, singing "Open a New Window" in perfect harmony.

I think the last movie I stood in line for (for an hour!) was the Matrix at the Chinese in Hollywood. There was also an xmen movie also at the Chinese(I don't remember which), where everyone dressed up and had a good time waiting in the seats.
Probably that Taylor movie is considered an event movie-those fans are crazy.
