1) This isn't going to make a bunch of sex workers suddenly homeless; there are other alternatives as already stated in this thread such as justfor.fans, fancentro, and others with those two being the biggest alternatives. Pornhub also has its own version, but much like Pornhub's website, they have invested practically nothing in its development and I think they pay MAYBE once a month, with up to a month delay.
2) The anti-porn crusaders have been, for a decade now, using the guise of eliminating "sex trafficking" to get politicians on both sides of the aisle on their side. But to be clear, the primary impetus is from the right wing religious zealots, followed by the left wingers who are heavy into performative virtue. "Sex trafficking" happens to be the perfect guise to get BOTH sides of the aisle involved, as left wingers and the whole "believe women" caucus leap on it as an easy win.
3) OnlyFans is "based in the UK" but the original British owner sold it in 2018 to some shady Ukranian/Russians who were already running similar sites. There's countless stories from both their previous sites and now OnlyFans about performers not getting paid, having access to funds cut off, being unable to reach a human or get any sort of response from the OF administrative Ivory tower.
4) As stated before, OF was not originally designed for porn. They even banned porn in their unenforced terms of service for the longest while, until someone pointed it out and they quietly changed it to allow porn. I think the use of it for porn may have vastly increased when it was sold to the Ukranian/Russians.
5) The anti-porn crusaders, again under the "sex trafficking" guise (and also the child p*rn guise) have been lobbying Visa and Mastercard for awhile now to change its rules as to what their platforms can be used for. They were heavily quoted in the NYT article that prompted V&M to block Pornhub from using their networks, which resulted in Pornhub (Mindgeek) booting massive amounts of porn off their many sites and then shutting down XTube.
6) Smelling blood in the water, the crusaders then got Visa and MC to change their rules for porn producers and made them a lot more restrictive. This happened in April. OF and the other Fans sites began requiring performers to have signed 2257 forms verifying model ids (two forms of id!) and signed model statements. This caused a lot of homemade porn to be removed from OnlyFans earlier this year. Basically the deal was OF COULD ask for these releases at any time, but I don't know if they ever actually did. The performers has to attest that they had these signed releases.
These new rules also stated that any uploaded porn had to be reviewed PRIOR to being shown, and livestreams had to be approved during. That is a lot of work for a site to do, since performers could no longer upload clips without having a delay before they were posted as everything now had to be manually approved.
7) Mindgeek/Pornhub - They have been lazy for a decade. They haven't invested much in their platforms, the backend is shit for models and for users, and they got blindsided, resting on their success. They had pushed off attempts to get them to police their network better for years, always said they were but didn't really do much that was visible. Is it possible they could have avoided that big takedown? Who knows.
8) Did I mention OF was shady as fuck? They haven't updated their terms of service yet so no one knows exactly what the new rules will be. I can guess, though, based on what they have said this far, is that they are allowing nudity in both videos and photos but no sexual contact or interaction. This is similar to how Patreon runs - Patreon allows nudity and fetish under the guise of "art" but does not allow any sexual touching or performance. So you can be nude, possibly even visibly aroused, but you can't touch it or do anything with it. And even then it's a bit of a gray area since what consists of porn is rather nebulous.
