Neil Diamond

You never hear much about him...any skeletons in his closet or juicy rumors? Does he have any gay fans?

Saw him in concert about 7 years ago. We had special VIP passes which included a gift bag and dinner before the show. Most of the people at this dinner were women and members of his fan club. His assistant came out and gave all the women special necklaces from Neil. The place went insane, imagine 60- something women sobbing trike teenage girls. Having said that- the concert was a blast, he gave 110%, the crown was super into it and me and my friend (front row seats) made it onto the Jumbotron. A few years later I ended up givin* the contents of the gift bag ( minus the fleece blanket with Neil’s name embroidered into it) to a sales man at a car dealership who had the license plate “ JAZ SNGR”

Neil is one of those singers everyone claims to loathe but secretly love. Who doesnt know all the words to Sweet Caroline ?

by Anonymousreply 4July 4, 2018 5:33 PM

Neil Diamond is age 77 now. That's a good reason he is not in the forefront anymore.

by Anonymousreply 5July 4, 2018 5:53 PM

"Neil is one of those singers everyone claims to loathe but secretly love. Who doesnt know all the words to Sweet Caroline ?"

I know them, but that doesn't mean that I don't hate them, R4.

by Anonymousreply 6July 4, 2018 6:48 PM

My dad said he’s ethnic.

by Anonymousreply 7July 4, 2018 6:53 PM

I've heard he said "Sweet Caroline" was written about a 12 year-old Caroline Kennedy when Neil was in his late 20's.

Discuss.

by Anonymousreply 8July 4, 2018 7:01 PM

It was written specifically for Lea Thompson’s show. She was to grow into the song.

by Anonymousreply 9July 4, 2018 7:06 PM

^^oh yeah? Well, what about ‘My Louise’?

by Anonymousreply 10July 4, 2018 7:13 PM

Neil is part of the tribe. He's the jewish Elvis. One of the best songwriters of all time going all the way back to the Brill Building.

by Anonymousreply 11July 4, 2018 7:17 PM

R4 all drunk paunchy white straight men know and love ‘Sweet Caroline’, much to our dismay.

As a Gatling, I loved the cover of Hot August Nights in my mom’s record collection.

He obviously has talent, but I always found him very bland and cheesy.

And "I Am I Said" has some of the most hilariously bad lyrics in pop music. The chair didn't say anything, y'all!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 15July 4, 2018 7:58 PM

His voice is fun to imitate.

In January 2018, Diamond announced that he would immediately retire from touring due to having been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

by Anonymousreply 17July 5, 2018 11:36 PM

Linda Ronstadt (who has Parkinson's), Glen Campbell & Neil did a godawful medley of Neil's hits on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour.

by Anonymousreply 18July 6, 2018 12:40 AM

If I were Glen Campbell, I’d spend all my time performing my own timeless greats like ‘Wichita Lineman’ and paying everyone else and their trifling songs no mind.

by Anonymousreply 19July 6, 2018 12:25 PM

R19 That would be somewhat difficult as Glen Campbell is dead.

by Anonymousreply 20July 6, 2018 12:53 PM

I always got him mixed up with Neil Sedaka.

by Anonymousreply 21July 6, 2018 1:00 PM

I actually prefer Jimmy Webb singing Wichita Lineman. He wrote it too.

by Anonymousreply 22July 6, 2018 1:04 PM

I was a teenage gayling when this came out. Along with Donna Summers' "Heaven Knows", I thought this was THE best song ever written.

In the video, you'll notice that both of them have their hand in their pocket. Did they have to finger themselves to get through working with each other?

My mom was obsessed with him, and played the crap out of his stuff at home and when taking me to and from school. For the longest time though, I thought the song "Forever In Blue Jeans" was actually called "Reverend Blue Jeans", which made no sense to me.

by Anonymousreply 24July 6, 2018 1:08 PM

I’m amused by his rambly sprechgesang. He always sounds so affably exasperated and “aw, shucks” when singing. Hearing his voice often puts me in a 1930s/40s New York headspace.

by Anonymousreply 25July 6, 2018 1:10 PM

I always confuse him with Enklebird Homodinker.

by Anonymousreply 26July 6, 2018 1:14 PM

His song Reverend Blue Jeans about a hippy priest was stupid.

by Anonymousreply 27July 6, 2018 3:40 PM

Reverend Blue Jeans and Brother Love were fucking Holly Holy at the Traveling Salvation Show.

by Anonymousreply 28July 6, 2018 4:27 PM

R27 is stealing Kevin James shtick?

by Anonymousreply 29July 6, 2018 4:53 PM

R26, you mentioned it. Englebert Humperdinck has a fantastic voice. Was good looking and perhaps under-appreciated early-on.

^^ Those are some cocksucking lips.

by Anonymousreply 31July 6, 2018 5:54 PM

I have never understood his success or how he has so many fans. He has an awful voice and from seeing him on TV, hardly any charisma when he is performing. The songs - OMG , the worst ever!

by Anonymousreply 32July 6, 2018 5:59 PM

Never gotten him, his voice or his music. Too each his own. Of the same ilk, Billy Joel. Although Joel has always sort of given me the creeps. Diamond seems like a regular kind of fellow- just don't care for his voice or music.

by Anonymousreply 33July 6, 2018 6:03 PM

Neil and Barbra went to high school together (was it Erasmus High?) in Brooklyn.

Neil's voice isn't bad, his songs are just so overorchestrated.

Has anyone been inside the San Remo? Wondering what the apartments are like.

A lot of those 60s and 70s artists got their "charisma" from being singer-songwriters. Look at Carole King. She looks like some coffee house waitress. And Joni Mitchell looked like an uptight librarian. That's why I think people like Bette Midler got so popular. Bette would get up and shake her boobs around the stage and the level of her energy was so different than the singer-songwriters just strumming their guitars or sitting at the piano.

by Anonymousreply 38July 7, 2018 12:37 AM

his songs were corny but some of his lesser hits from the beginning of his career sort of rocked. Like the one from Pulp Fiction "Girl Youll Be a Woman Soon" (his version was remade by a 90s band) and "Cherry Cherry"
