“You Could Have Been With Me” written by Lea Maalfrid produced by Christopher Neil Billboard Hot 100 #15 Adult Contemporary #6
You're the seventh son of the seventh son Maybe that's why you're such a strange and special one You can't even seem to love yourself And with a few exceptions, not anybody else You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink You can give a man your whole heart and soul, but you cannot make him think You could have been with me instead of alone and lonely You can tell him the day of departure, exactly the place and the time He might really wanna be there, but he misses every time Is he a man or a paper tiger When you need him will he run or stand beside you You could have been with me instead of alone and lonely You could have been with me instead of alone and lonely You could have been with me instead of alone and lonely

I liked the one where she took the morning train.

I love that whole album, especially Telephone Lines and A Letter From Joey.

This is beyond awesome! My personal fave. Also love "For Your Eyes Only."

Nothing holds a candle to My Sugar Walls
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 26, 2021 11:24 PM |
I love a lot of her songs but my favorite is the same as OP’s. I listen to it often. Still holds up.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 26, 2021 11:29 PM |
I actually like "Almost Over You" - but agreed this is good. I forgot about Telephone Line, which was a fun video.
I liked Strut, but Sugar Walls was just fucking embarrassing.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 26, 2021 11:39 PM |
My favorite song by her is ‘When he shines’. It reminds me of my late father.

R1, I prefer the one where she IS the morning train.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 26, 2021 11:49 PM |
Wow, I forgot about this song. It’s bringing back some memories. Thanks,OP.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 27, 2021 2:10 AM |
I totally forgot it too. Great song. Though R7 - When He Shines - is the real memory hole. Gayling me used to cry listening to that song. Listening to it now, I’m not sure why. The song is sentimental - but the words.,,,

Look you bitches, it's not called "Telephone Line", it's called "Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)". Love that song.
I also love her theme from About Last Night, "So Far, So Good". So '80s.
And "The Lover in Me" is a jam!
Interesting that Easton had quite a number of successful songs on the R&B charts thanks to her collaborations with Prince and LA Reid & Babyface.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
I will forever associate Sheena Easton with James Bond.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 27, 2021 2:57 AM |
I love the duet she did with Prince on the Batman album the Arms of Orion. It's a beautiful song. When did they get rid of the adult contemporary chart or is it still around?
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 27, 2021 3:45 AM |
Almost over you... it almost brings a tear to the eye. I live Strut as well.

[quote]Look you bitches, it's not called "Telephone Line", it's called "Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)".
No, YOU look you fucking retard! She DID have a song called “Telephone Lines” (see the link below, dummy) and it was on the “You Could Have Been With Me” album. The one you’re referring to was on the “Best Kept Secret” album.🙄
Why don’t you let us experts handle this topic so you don’t keep making a fool of yourself.

I saw Sheena in concert a few years ago. She still sounded good.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 27, 2021 7:13 AM |
R19 - good to hear. What is funny is that no one has mentioned her looks. I always thought she was one of the most beautiful women of the 80's.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 27, 2021 1:46 PM |
Maybe I'm an open book because I know you're mine.

Our Sheena wanders on to the set of an 80s gay porn shoot...

R19 sheena was pretty and pretty hot.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 27, 2021 3:24 PM |
Those early albums were so much better. She should have stuck with that kind of material versus attempting to go the MTV route.
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 27, 2021 3:38 PM |
Sheena was versatile and I liked that about her

I really like Modern Girl, and I like that it tried to be empowering - at least for its time. It is obviously written by a man, though.
She don't build her world
'Round no single man. =======>good message
But she's gettin' by
Doing what she can ========>undermines the good message
She is free to be what she wants to be
And all she wants to be is a modern girl ========> good again

Thing is Schizo Sheena followed up 'Modern Girl' by the 'a woman's place is in kitchen and the bedroom' anthem: 'Morning Train' (or '9 to 5' as it was called in the UK).

She was literally handed the song Modern Girl by EMI Records.

R8, I love the one where she throws herself in front of the morning train.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 27, 2021 6:56 PM |
My favorite is when, at age 25, she openly declared her forbidden love for 14-year-old Luis Miguel.
Unfortunately, following the success of this song, we Spanish speaking listeners were then subject to her shitty Spanish-language versions of "Telefone" and "Almost Over You" (and, if memory serves me correctly, "We've Got Tonight" with Kenny Rogers, whose accent was horrific.)

I love this song, but I hate the part where says, "Paypah taiga."
It's almost as bad as "When He Shines, "when she signs, "He changes colors just like a chameleon," and rushes through "chameleon" to fit it in before the bridge ends.

R31 Sheena Easton is a PEDOPHILE!!!!
She only got away with it because she's a CIS WHITE WOMAN, preying on a YOUNG LATINX BOY!!!!!
CANCEL HER!!!!

R16 I love Arms of Orion too! Her voice is so clear and beautiful and Prince’s vocal performance in that song is a little more in that vein than usual. I’ve heard other P say they don’t like that song and I never got why?
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 27, 2021 8:00 PM |
R9...Couldn't agree more. "I Wouldn't Beg For Water" is a song I still listen to regularly. It's one of those songs that says what so many other songs try to say but fail miserably & laughably, and even too clumsily. The lyrics don't try to be clever or quirky & gorgeously, sincerely express one's affection to another. I love this song, just love it.

LOVE "No Deposit, No Return" "Days Like This" and "101". I still listen to the extended mixes of these 3 all the time
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 28, 2021 12:53 AM |
I also like The Arms of Orion. It was actually a Top 40 song but it seems forgotten today sadly.
Sheena was very well suited to Prince. Funny how he tried with all of these women but it was Sheena, with the exception of Sheila E, who seemed to have the most success with her Prince collaborations. Their voices were well-suited to one another and her voice also suited his production sound.

I always think of Julie Brown on “Just Say Julie” when she did a faux commercial for “Sheenapoo” shampoo...
“Now you too can smell like a semi-celebrity!”
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 6, 2021 10:57 AM |
R41 Sheena was one of Julie Brown's constant targets. I remember she would introduce her videos by saying, "Now here's a video from model wannabee, Sheena Easton!"

This thread reminded me of my Sheena playlist on Amazon Music. I listened to some of it on the way to work today!
Brought back some memories. When I broke up with my first boyfriend in the 90s, I was mostly into alternative and grunge music, but I still listened to "Almost Over You" on a loop for a week and bawled my eyes out. What a MARY!!!!

There were many boardroom meetings about her shrill upper notes. She was known as Shrieking Sheena but It was decided to don't let go high rather than perform the controversial surgery to prevent her from trying to tackle those higher notes.
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 6, 2021 4:56 PM |
R44 WTF? She was a teen then too. Her voice has naturally deepened and matured over the decades.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 6, 2021 5:05 PM |
"Strut" is so awesome, and so predictive of our current woke social climate.
She dresses and acts like a vixen all the while she complains that some man wants her to dress and act like a vixen.

Any of the songs produced by Babyface. "The Lover in Me"
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 6, 2021 5:29 PM |
I always preferred her B-side to Sugar Walls, Musty Hamper...it was darker...
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 6, 2021 6:23 PM |
The look on her face in the Do It For Love video makes it seem like Sheena wants poor Billy to strangle his cat to prove his devotion to her!
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 6, 2021 6:32 PM |
I always wondered why “Do It For Love” didn’t chart better when it was a good song.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 6, 2021 6:46 PM |
R51, Sheena was queen of looking like she was mad about something when she wasn’t. It was called looking “pouty”. It was one of her signature looks.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 6, 2021 10:43 PM |
For someone who is mostly forgotten in popular culture today, Sheena had a good run. 15 top 40 hits over 11 years is not too shabby.

Saw her 2 decades ago during either Flower or Food and Wine Festival at EPCOT. She touched my hand and it was a total fangurl moment.
Two years ago.

She used to be stick thin and about 15 years ago she just said fuck it and started eating like she was making up for lost time.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 7, 2021 12:35 AM |
No, she was a little porky at EPCOT when I saw here. I have an unflattering photo from the back.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 7, 2021 12:57 AM |
It’s really a beautifully sung pop ballad.
| by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 18, 2021 5:48 PM |
It seemed like Sheena was on Solid Gold every other week, trying her best to push as many album tracks as potential singles as possible. Of course, back then it was acceptable to lip sync on shows like SG, so she probably just spent a day in the studio performing the entire album with costume changes in between.
