What are some movies that failed despite their good director, source material, music, cast, etc.

Any movie with a ton of stars will inevitably suck

The recent Amsterdam disaster got some attention due to the cast and other bona fides. It was awful. Not sure that's a good example, because I'm not sure what expected of it.

The Medusa Touch (1978)
Directed by a seasoned Shakespearean director and based on a best selling novel
A great cast including Richard Burton, Lee Remick, Lino Ventura, Jeremy Brett, Marie-Christine Barrault, Alan Badel, Harry Andrews, Derek Jacobi, and Michael Hordern
Yet, a terribly boring movie with bad performances

Evening (2007). It was boring, dull, and overacted. Over produced.
Directed by Lajos Koltai, who worked with the legendary Istvan Szabo
Based on a novel
Starring Meryl Streep, Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collette, Natasha Richardson, Claire Danes, Mamie Gummer, Eileen Atkins, Hugh Dancy, Patrick Wilson, Barry Bostwick, and Glenn Close

Xanadu
Heavily hyped prior to release in print, TV and radio.
US Double platinum soundtrack with Olivia Newton-John and ELO.
Olivia had 3 hit singles from the soundtrack “Magic”, “Xanadu” and “Suddenly”
ELO had a couple of moderate hits from the soundtrack too. “I’m Alive” and “All Over The World”.

R8 Even Elizabeth hated “Cleopatra”. It was a soap opera script.

Xanadu really is terrible. I know some people love it for the music and the camp value. But, IMO, it's just a bad movie.

I love the Xanadu soundtrack but I’ve never been able to sit through the entire movie. So bad

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
I like it more now (after watching a few times.) But back in 1997 I just remember being devastated at the squandered potential.

I’ve seen Xanadu well over a dozen times. I have a sentimental attachment to the film while recognize its awfulness. I watched it most recently when ONJ died, and I’d never loved it more.

Andy Gibb was supposed to costar with ONJ in 'Xanadu' - which is why she signed up for it. The soundtrack would have been him, ONJ and ELO. But the producers dropped him because of his drug problem back then - they didn't want to take a chance on him and his erratic behavior and potential 'absences' which would cost them money. They went with the cardboard Michael Beck.
I think Gibb would've saved the box office.

"New York, New York" - Minnelli, DeNiro, Scorsese = BIG FLOP.

New York, New York failed *because* of its parts, r17.

Didn’t know that, R16. And I completely agree with you.

I was watching the latest (OVERLY LONG) James Bond movie 🎥 Saturday- it was a piece of crap.

R8- Thank you.
Cleopatra gave us the line, "My breasts are full of love and life."
It is beyond criticism.
