I personally go with a classic, the Keddie Murders.

R2 - Here's one that made big headlines when I was a kid:

The Linda Sobek case in Southern California from the '90s. A pretty, young blonde model is lured by a fake photographer to the Angeles Forest under the guise of him taking glamour shots of her. Instead, he asphyxiates her and leaves her for dead in a shallow grave. The "photographer" thankfully is caught. Very creepy guy, very creepy case.

The Angeles Forest, in general, is a scary place. About 10 corpses per year are discovered there, and at least twice that many are lost and never found. Here's a creepy quote about the Angeles Forest from one Sheriff deputy:

Good one R2 The Keddie Murders freaked me out.

The Trail of Tears Highway (with all of those aboriginal girls disappearing) in British Columbia, Canada sounds terrifying. Does anybody if there are suspects or if anybody has ever been caught?

r5 that's one of those cases that really is not one killer. It will be several over decades.

I was listening to a true crime podcast called Sword and Scale. One episode profiled the kidnapping of an Omaha boy named Johnny Gosch which tied into the Franklin cover ups and a child sex trafficking ring. The pedophiles were a satanic cult and the leaders and participants were alleged to be prominent government officials. This was the 80s. In the past few years the mother of Johnny Gosch has received several photos of her son hog tied and gagged(at the age of abduction, 13, I think?). The photos were found on child porn sites. Some of the photos feature other boys as well. It's ok to view the pictures because there's no nudity and the mother posted them on her site.

One victim claimed they saw Pres. Bush Sr. At an event. It seemed so scandalous that I have a hard time believing all of that happened without me ever hearing about it.

Is there any truth to this stuff? I listened to it the other night but haven't researched beyond the mother's site. It freaked me out. I think the place they held the sex parties was called Bohemian Grove.

R19 I've been watching the Starz series The Missing and the whole topic freaks me out, too.

It's a great series, BTW, and is shot in France so the scenery is beautiful. I watch it with closed captioning so I can hear everything (lots of conversations in streets and crowded rooms, with frequent language-switching). I think the story may have been inspired by the Madelyn McKann disappearance, with a sex crime slant.

The timing switches back and forth to the 2005 child abduction and the father's frantic attempt to find his son in the present day.

Fred and Rose West are fascinating - I'm not sure how notorious they are in the USA, but they are definitely worth reading about. Completely shocking and an interesting example of how two psychopaths working together can wreck total havoc and the dynamic the two of them had was very interesting but very very deadly.

The poor poor women they murdered and their own children too - and absolutely no remorse.

Ironically, they were ultimately caught when the family joke that their missing daughter was buried under the patio turned out to be true!

Word is Bill's wife is filing for divorce, and requesting around $350m in settlement.

Do you think Bill will live to see 2015?

Somehow, I doubt it. Even if it wasn't all true (which it is) he'll never overcome this situation.

The murder of Arlis Perry has always spooked me. I think it's mainly because her body was found right among the pews.

It's bad enough during the day, but the church also has candlelight labyrinth walks and yoga, which increases the creep factor by a million.

Happy Like Murderers is an excellent book about the West murders. It's something you can only read once because the details are so horrific.

That Arlis Perry one is freaky - I'd never heard of it before.

Good one, whoever mentioned Arlis Perry. That crime tops my list of mystery I'd most want solved. Really eerie case - with connections to son of Sam, satanic rituals, Manson. Maury Terry's book 'The Ultimate Evil" is a fascinating read on the convoluted subject.

Danny Rolling and the University of Florida murders. Wiki tells some of it, but it is actually much more gory. He would decapitate some of them or cut them open from the chest down and pose/display the bodies.

What Jodi Arias did to Travis Alexander blows my mind to this day. The premeditation and planning, staging a robbery at her grandparents so she could steal their gun, renting a car she insisted be a plain color, carrying a boat load of full gas cans in the trunk, dying her hair, having sex with Travis all day to lull him into a highly vulnerable state, snapping photos of him in the shower right up to the moment she flung open the door and savagely attacked him, the stopover at another guys house on the way home to create an alibi, doing headstands in the police station, and on and on and on... she is one extremely nasty piece of work - a textbook sociopath and then some.

It really goes down the rabbit hole with all of the wild theories. At first glance, it may seem like the argument took a bad turn and the scene was staged to divert attention, but then you factor in his lack of DNA at scene, the passed polygraph, and the palm print that doesn't match. It could be an opportunistic crime by someone who followed her in, but there are so many weird aspects to that scenario as well.

Are you familiar with the Gypsy Hill murders? It was a cluster that took place on the Peninsula over the course of a few months in 1976. I hadn't heard of them until a few months ago when there was a news story about the FBI and San Mateo Sheriff's Office knocking on doors seeking new info.

I wonder if there's any connection.

I thought that book was fascinating, and I never hear it mentioned anymore. I'm glad I'm not alone.

The mystery of the Sodder children, who disappeared in during Christmas in 1945, is an especially haunting and heartbreaking one. I always think about it during this time of year. The article about the case below is a terrific read.

Have any of these been made into documentaries or movies? I'd love to put something creepy on tonight.

Why are you people do "freaked out" by the Keddie murders? People can make their little documentaries whitewashing the truth and trying to make it look eerier than it was, but the people who lived there when it happened called it long ago.

The mother was a prostitute and drug dealer. The oldest son was a drug dealer. The older daughter was pregnant at age 13 and had the baby when she was 14. Rumors were that the younger girl who went missing was also pregnant. Those kids were being brought up in a sordid atmosphere. I wouldn't doubt the mother pimped out the girls. Just because the mother was murdered doesn't make her some blameless innocent. She attracted garbage to her home and let them in. Neighbors said a steady stream of men were in and out of the house.

The mother's sister was a weirdo, too, as was the father of the dead boy who was friends with the older boy. These were people who were from families who lived on the edge of society for several generations.

It's not so strange that kids would have slept through the murders. There may have been music playing or a tv turned on while the murders occurred and turned off afterward. Little kids stay up late and become nearly comatose when they finally fall asleep. Late for them in 11, 12 o'clock. My son used to sleep through my carrying presents up and down my very loud stairway every Christmas Eve.

There really isn't much mystery in Keddie. During the off season, it became section 8 housing (this used to happen every year in the hamptons too, until they did away with 99% of the motels). People on the bottom rungs of society take drugs and sell drugs for some extra money. Some of the women turn tricks, especially if they are drug users. This wasn't the Clutter family, an upstanding Baptist or Presbyterian farm family with some presence in the local community. This was a semi-transient woman who had a bunch of kids she couldn't afford. She used and sold drugs and turned tricks. Maybe her addiction was so bad she felt the need for more money and pimped the girls out. Maybe she was a sociopath who pimped the girls out. They certainly exist. Has anyone followed the case of Shannon Gilbert, the "sex worker" who was killed by the beach killer on Long Island? Her mother was also a prostitute.

Yes, I did, r27. Scared the shit right out of me. What a twisted, repulsive freak.

And the reason I'm creeped out by facial hair. Ew.

R22, no I'd never heard of the Gypsy Hill case. Fascinating, frightening stuff. As others have alluded in similar threads, so much freaky crimes occurred in California in the '60s, '70s. It really seems as if something evil was running loose there in those years (Manson, Zodiac, EAR ONS, countless others).

R30, that Blair Adams case is beyond mysterious and disturbing. So scary that the guy could not find the car key to the rental car that he was just driving. Makes you wonder if he really was being followed..

The Disappearance of Robin Graham

Robin Ann Graham (June 22, 1952 – disappeared November 15, 1970), was a college student who disappeared from a Los Angeles freeway in the early hours of November 15, 1970 after her car had broken down. She has not been heard from since, nor are there any clues as to her whereabouts or subsequent fate. Graham's case is often included in television programs about missing persons.

This unidentified child was found decapitated in 1983.

R34, the disappearance of Robin Ann Graham is very similar to the disappearance of Mona Jean Gallegos (sometime in the early to mid-70s) and also to other young women in LA who disappeared after having car trouble on the sides of freeways.

Seems possible that they were victimized by the same perp; some man pretending to help stranded young women by offering to have a look at their car and then giving them a lift. That whole scenario is so very chilling because it reminds me of the scariest scene in the Zodiac film (linked below). (Warning: scary, don't watch if spooked.)

R37, there was a thread awhile back on DL specifically asking if anybody lived in Milwaukee during Dahmer's reign of terror. A few people actually admitted to having seen him around some of the bars in Milwaukee or Chicago, and one poster said that although he was handsome, there was something very, very creepy and off about just his loner's presence/aura and his dead eyes.

I'd say that it was a good thing that he was so noticeably strange. Monster though he was, many men would've found Dahmer handsome and would've otherwise had no problem taking him home.

Yes R42, I'd imagine that a tall, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, scruffy Dahmer could have thrived under a gay dating app.

The possibility of psychos out there like Dahmer is the reason that I always text a third-party friend to let them know, more or less, where I am, who I'm with.

The DL thread linked below is another classic scary DL thread that has encouraged me to be careful with hooking up.

A really old one, two teen girls murdered in a forest preserve. I had known one of the girls. The police had a suspect but could never prove anything, I don't know why. Both girls were shot. They thought it was an ex boyfriend of one of the girls. Many years ago and no justice.

Maybe the government was after Blair Adams for some reason? The CIA or FBI can make you feel paranoid and nervous.

LA in the 70s was sometimes a scary place, r39. The darkness came in spontaneous waves.

That Arlis Perry case is extremely frightening.. murdered in a church in some satanic ritual. Why hasn't this case gotten more attention over the years?

Background behind the Arlis Perry case: Perry was originally a Christian girl from Minot, North Dakota. In Minot, ND (in the early '70s), there was an air force base where there were reportedly occult/satanic members. Perry may have tried to proselytize to some of these members, maybe even converting a few of them, angering others in the cult. Whatever it was that angered them, it was enough for these occult members to track her down all the way to Stanford University and brutally kill her.

Son of Sam (David Berkowitz) made insinuations while in prison that he knew the culprit of Perry's death (a man named Manson II).

Separately, Berkowitz would also later admit that there was more than one Son of Sam shooter (besides himself). One of the men that Berkowitz would implicate as a co-shooter (John Carr) would ironically later on be found shot dead at the Minot, North Dakota air force base (where Perry was from). Sounds convoluted? Yes - but it's scary, fascinating stuff.

I still get so broken hearted for that little 14 year old Vietnamese kid that had gotten away from Dahmer, was rescued by two black women, and then forcibly taken BACK by white cops to Dahmer's house of horrors. That poor boy :( So close to getting away alive and I fear Dahmer's rage made his last moments on Earth terribly, terribly painful. So glad that shitstain Jeffrey is dead.

I'm more scared of the psychos I already know than strangers I haven't met yet.

The Cleveland Torso Murders, one of the cases in VOTN's link, are really scary. Also that family murdered in their house in 1912. And the Beaumont Children disappearance is truly eerie.

Re: the Arlis Perry murder, I heard that the head of the church at Stanford was transferred shortly after the incident and stopped talking to law enforcement. Whether that is true or not, and whether that has anything to do with anyone being protected from criminal prosecution, I don't know. Having something so horrible happen at his church would have been very traumatic to say the least.

I looked up her husband and he's a practicing child psychologist, and an admirable guy and an advocate for kids in the foster care system.

Stanford had a few murders during that time period. Two female students were strangled and dumped in the hills. Ted Bundy later became a suspect as he had done a summer program at Stanford in the late 60's and was known to have visited a girlfriend in Palo Alto during 1973-1974.

A male student was found stabbed to death in front of the Meyer lab. He hadn't been robbed and no motive was ever established. There's been speculation that it may have been part of the zebra murders.

As the posters above have said, CA was a strange place in the sixties and seventies. Living through that era as a single woman, living alone, definitely shaped my mother for the worst. She lived in fear of getting a flat tire on the freeway, repairmen, mall parking lots, etc.

If you view the picture linked in this post, you can see the last recorded moment in the life of an unknown victim of Dean Corll, also known as the Candyman, because his family owned a candy factory. Corll paid two teenage acquaintances to lure at least 28 young men and boys--friends, kids from school--to Corll's house under the pretense of parties and drugs. The acquaintances thought Corll was a pimp, and was selling these boys into sexual slavery, but the truth was even more awful. Once alone with his victims, Corll would tie them to a plywood board, spread eagle, and rape and sexually torture them while taking pictures for a pedophile ring. The victims would die from the abuse, and their bodies would be disposed of. Corll would then ask his teenage friends to procure another victim.

Over time, his acquaintances became wise to what was going on, even helping to dispose of the bodies. One acquaintance, Elmer Wayne Henley, started taking part in the murders as well. The whole terrifying ordeal ended when Henley brought a new male victim to Corll's house...as well as Henley's girlfriend, who had just fled her home after being beaten by her father. Corll was so enraged that a female had been brought to his house that he vowed to kill all three teenagers. Henley was able to convince Corll that he could rape and murder the girl while Corll could rape and murder the boy. Henley couldn't go through with it, however, and grabbed a pistol and shot Corll. After freeing both victims, Henley called the police.

While waiting for the police to arrive, Henley told the male victim "I could've gotten $200 for you."

28 bodies were recovered, many of which were never identified. At the time, it was believed to be the largest serial killing spree in US history. The teenager in the photo has never been identified, but the picture is believed to have been taken in Corll's basement, where victims were initially tied up. The handle of Corll's "torture kit" is visible in the foreground of the photo.

R58, an interesting thing about Perry's husband is that he discredits satanic ritual abuse.

This sounds like a spur of the moment crime. How would the killer have the time to get the whole satanic gang together for a ritual murder when the victim just probably wandered into the chapel to pray.

I really wouldn't discredit the satanism angle so quickly. David Berkowitz basically admitted that she was murdered by a cult (after he was already convicted and had no reason to come forth).

And not to get graphic, but Arlis Perry's body was not found in such a condition that it was "spur of the moment." A church altar candle was left penetrated inside her and her jeans were left arranged in a way that it resembled occult iconography.

I remember Occult Iconography jeans. I had two pair and three pairs of Jordache jeans in high school. No Calvins though.

The video of Richard Speck dancing in prison in blue panties with hormonally-grown man-breasts was almost equally as disturbing as his crimes.

That 911 call in the Brandon Lawson case is so creepy to listen to. Also really sad and disturbing to see all of the comments by people trying to decipher it... Especially the one talking about him being chased into the woods.

It sounds like he's saying he ran into some guys who chased him into the woods and they got the first guy.

Was he hiding in his car or in the woods? Really sad.

The 911 call is hard to make out. It sounds to me like his car ran out of gas and he met some guys who chased him (and possibly someone else) through the woods. They got the first guy. Brandon was injured and hiding in a field. There was a later phone call to his brother during which Brandon said he was bleeding. His brother said it sounded like he was shuffling around in some bushes.

"The Career Girl Murders" was a huge case in New York City in August of 1963.

*Bit of trivia- The actress Joanna Pettet knew Janice Wylie, one of the murdered girls. It was Pettet along with Barbara Lewis who had lunch with Sharon Tate at Tate's home on Friday August 8th up at Tate's Cielo Drive home. It was after midnight on August 9th that the Manson killers went on their murder spree up there.

* The pilot for Kojak was titled "The Marcus Nelson Murders." It was indeed based on the murders of Janice Wylie and Emily Hoffert- The Career Girl Murders."

West Mesa 13 case in Albuquerque, NM

My parent's property backed on to the John List house, where he killed all his family. When I walked home from the bus stop, after school, I always talked to his son as he was doing his paper route. I probably talked to the son the day his father murdered him. I remember that we had called the Star Ledger about our paper not being delivered for a few days. I was down in Florida, with my entire family, when the bodies were found. The FBI had interviewed our entire neighborhood...except us.

The List family (except for Dad) are buried near Whitney Houston.

List took off and married again. He lived a pretty quiet life until they finally tracked him down.

He died in prison.

Brian Shaffer disappearance is haunting.

So glad to see this thread bumped. Just spent the last two days reading over part 1. One of the best threads for true crime aficionados on this site.

The Arlis Perry murder discussed throughout this thread and the last one has been solved. There was no Satanic cult. She was killed by the security guard who found her body. Son of Sam was a liar.
