Michelle Obama is readying for the release of her new Netflix documentary, “The Light We Carry: Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.” The doc is an hour and thirty minutes film featuring an honest coversation between Michelle and Oprah, where they discuss multiple topics highlighted in Michelle’s book. One of these is friendship.
“Did all of your friends make the cut once you went to the White House?” Oprah asked, referencing a statement that Michelle made in her book.
“Nope. No, they did not,” said Michelle. “Here’s the thing that I’ve learned: Stay open to friends… but when they show you who they are, you got to [believe them], and then move on. And some friends had foibles that were fine for ‘regular’ friends, but once we get into the White House, it was like, ‘Oh, you can’t be that person up in here. We got too much at stake.’”
“If my friends weren’t acting right? It was slow ghost,” she said. “You know, the slow ghost — where you don’t cut them off right away, but you just become less… available.”

Coward. She should list the deal-breaking foibles. That would be very DL.

She is probably talking about that event planner who coordinated that state dinner that was crashed by those tacky reality stars. She was technically an assistant to the president and she got shown the door REAL quick.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 25, 2023 8:09 PM |
I'm actually doing that now with a 30 year friend. He was my closest and I worry that I kept him since I didn't have others that were that close. But, something happen and I determine that it is not worth it and I needed to have more self-respect for myself so I am doing the slow ghost.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 25, 2023 8:23 PM |
^^^ I agree with Ms Obama and R14. "Slow-ghosting" is a splendid term for a much-needed act.
The thing about slow-ghosting is, your "friends" retain the chance to redeem themselves. But it's unlikely that will happen, because their behavior got them on the list in the first place.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 25, 2023 8:28 PM |

Michelle really does have a nasty streak.
Another shitty thing she said was something like "Only 20 of our 30 years of marriage were good."
No wonder Barack despises her.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 25, 2023 8:47 PM |
Sounds weird. They were good enough for you to waste time with before the White House. Michelle Obama seems like the type that would say: "Everyone should always live their best life." She should have cut them loose before the White House.
And why "slow-ghost"? Seems kind of cowardly, coming from her. I have ghosted people before, but that's me.

I don't think I can follow what she's saying, and maybe watching the documentary, in context, it would make more sense. Is she saying she's slow ghosted friends who wanted to take advantage of her place in the White House or would end up in tabloid stories? Or friends that did something bad and needed to go? I've always found Michelle Obama to be an extremely straightforward and clear communicator, but I'm struggling to understand what she's talking about.
Can someone explain it to me in simple terms?

She dumped the friends who were too black for the WH.

Unlike the Trumps, they couldn't get away with defrauding childrens charities, violation of the Hatch Act, or selling if government secrets. And, they had to make sure that the people they surrounded themselves with were good people, not the Steven Miller/Roger Stone/Steve Bannon type.
They did what they had to do. It was necessary and smart.

Mrs. Obama simply is saying that in the White House they had a critically important public life, and that that came first if friends didn't understand what it meant.
Invoking race as a reflex joke is one thing, but seeing people jump on more "Bad Obama" MAGA shit is a reminder that the DL remains unfortunately vulnerable to the true racists.

[quote][R36], they had an image to uphold. So any friends that were too ghetto was slow-ghosted. You got it now.
I seriously doubt that's what she means. I can't imagine Michelle Obama having "ghetto" friends, and I think just using that word, and suggesting that is a little racist.
| by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 25, 2023 11:11 PM |
I don't think the ghosting had anything to do with race or class. I'm guessing it was people who partied too much (cocaine, illegal drugs), had criminal ties, fucked around too much.
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 25, 2023 11:20 PM |
I have a semi-public life on a very small level, but there are friends and family who fit well in some parts of my life who don't and wouldn't fit in others. It doesn't get mentioned but it's mutually understood. They don't invite me where I wouldn't fit, either.
People in critically powerful positions are inevitably targeted by creeps and political enemies. Sketchy friends offer a conduit for mischief, attacks and real damage to the initiatives, programs and power that are the REAL targets of "the other side." And it's not party-driven, except that at this time one party is fascist (at best).
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 25, 2023 11:21 PM |
I bet everybody, including the waitress at the Waffle House you stopped in once on the campaign, contacts you and tries to get an invitation to the WH once you're in there. You probably need to beat them off with sticks.

Michelle grew up in a black neighborhood in Chicago but not sure just how ghetto she ever was. And certainly not much at all from 18 on at Princeton. Barack was never ghetto. So I don't think these 40 year old Harvard lawyers had ghetto friends who she had to ghost.
racist fucktards, up thread.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 25, 2023 11:31 PM |
Ghetto? Why do people insist on calling black neighborhoods ghettos when it’s a word used for poor Jewish communities in Europe? It was like they couldn’t wait to pawn that name off on someone more oppressed than them.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 26, 2023 12:25 AM |
I wish she'd stayed active in politics - she could be our next president.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 26, 2023 12:30 AM |
She could be referring to anything, from friends with poor table manners to friends who did drugs in the WH, and anything in between.
In other words, we can't know whether or not the friends "earned" their banishment because we don't - and likely won't - know what they did.
I agree that doing an Oprah "documentary" is not a good look for anybody.

Michelle's Chicago public high school is ranked 67th nationally. Her older brother went to Princeton. She was never ghetto, nor were her friends.
It's a whole 'nother question whether she and Oprah are gold-plated, sanctimonious gasbags who are in it for the money. I'd only see that documentary if I was paid to watch it. And I voted for her husband both times.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 26, 2023 3:44 PM |
As much as I like the Obamas, Michelle has never given me the warm fuzzies. Neither did Hillary. I like them both more than say, Nancy Reagan or Melanoma Trump, but they are both cunts, so there’s that. But in interviews she did when Barack was running for president, she was asked how they met and she was somewhat disparaging of him, making light of his “funny name” and his smoker’s breath. It sounded…shaming to me. And she did it in more than one occasion. When Barbara Walters interviewed them post election, Barack stopped the interview to tell Michelle that she had spinach in her teeth. I think it was his way of bringing her down a little bit. I admire her intelligence and her love of her family, but I don’t think she’s a very warm person. And as mentioned above, when I saw her hugging up with George W., it altered my perception of her and Barack. They’re part of the 1%. The political party leadership works the public up into a frenzy during their campaigns against their opponents, but they are best buddies when they’re not running. But we’re all hating on each other while they sit back and paint each other’s toenails and eat pizza. As a black man I feel somewhat guilty about my feelings, but I am being honest. I guess I’ve always been on the fence with her.
| by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 26, 2023 4:06 PM |
Really, why is it important to like her, or find her a "warm" person?
I never understand the fascination of some gay men of First Ladies, on trying to glamorize them or wash away their faults because they dressed in chic designer clothes or set a nice table at state dinners. Most take up a limited range of official duties and champion a non-controversial cause or two. Nothing wrong with that, but they were not elected, they are not officially part of some team, not co-presidents.
To me she seems a cautious person anxious to portray her own capabilities, to stand on her own merits in the company of a political husband whose capabilities are judged in a broad light where she may be more comfortable judges by her peers based on education and professional focus. Nothing wrong with being more comfortable with that than the popularity contest of a general election.
The ghosting comments don't seem absurd. That one-third of her marriage was more strained than not doesn't quite seem absurd. What doesn't make sense in either case if for a person who professes her love of privacy and substance to bare personal matters unnecessarily and in public, Oprah-esque detail.
| by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 26, 2023 4:37 PM |
R59, I don’t think that I need anyone’s permission to like or dislike. And don’t assume that I’m painting a picture of anyone. She doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies, that’s all. And I’m hardly fascinated with First Ladies. I cannot speak for others in this thread. And if they are, what does that have to do with YOU? Your comments come across as smug and condescending.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 26, 2023 5:59 PM |
The conventional wisdom and the reason Oprah is bankrolling a film is that people worship Michelle. It's perfectly okay to say, "No thanks, toots." She's shrewd and smart but not genuine, warm or nice.
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 26, 2023 6:04 PM |
Friendships end, change or remain.
When Obama was elected in 2008, but before he was sworn in in 2009, I read an article where the reporter interviewed what were close friends of Barack Obama from when he served in the Illinois State Senate.
They all were serving their terms at the same time. They had cookout barbecues together, attended sporting events together, had weekly card games, their families socialized together and could fairly be described as close.
Once Obama was a US Senator, the friendships remained but changed, although all 4 still kept in touch because they were still elected Illinois politicians, and, of course, part of the job is to maintain a channel to your US Senator.
After the results were in and he defeated McCain, the reporter asked him if he has texted Obama.
"No, and I won't. He isn't ours anymore." his old friend stated.
That remark touched me, it was so real and poignant.
I share the reaction of some here that they wished Michelle Obama hadn't sat down with Oprah, but still, there is a certain truth to the reality that Obama describes about having to slow-ghost.
Once you've got those keys to the WH, not everybody can, or should, enter the door.

Believe it or not R60, it wasn't about you, not one comment that I made. The only connection is to 2 threads, both yours I take it, with the phrase "warm fuzzies" but I was commenting on a larger fascination, particularly by gay men, on the frivolous aspects of presidential wives that comes down to a warm-cold spectrum and ridiculous weighing of people who matter least.
There's a small industry of gay male biographers of First Ladies: the gowns and frocks and tittle-tattle trivia brigade. Look at threads on DL about presidential wives and many comments seem a place to attack women for style and grace factors that matter fuck all.

There is not a person on DL who has not slow-ghosted or been slow-ghosted. We all have one or two trashy friends that didn't or wouldn't grow up and you had to just move on. I agree that most people don't talk about it, but she's got books to sell and a Netflix deal to push. You go Michelle.

I never found Michelle to be ugly.
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 26, 2023 9:34 PM |
Why exactly r72? Because she’s transparent? She’s just pulling back the curtain so people understand what it’s really like to go to the WH. If she just lies about it, will that satisfy you?
What is so goddamn offensive about someone setting their boundaries? I don’t fucking get the animosity. You are probably all the same whores who “felt sorry for Melania” in 2017 lololol, right? Michelle is so terrible for admitting that some friendships were lost, and at times she made choices to ensure that unhealthy friendships did not linger? She totally did the right thing and she’s being authentic — unlike that hooker. And maybe she is also a cold person, don’t know don’t care. At least she didn’t run around with “fuck Christmas” all the time.

| by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 26, 2023 9:50 PM |
I thought she didn’t like Oprah. Allegedly Oprah tried to muscle her way into the Obama’s’ inner circle, mainly because she endorsed Barack for president. Michelle allegedly told her to back off a bit.
| by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 26, 2023 11:25 PM |
I'm guessing the Obamas do feel that they owe Oprah, which they do. Oprah endorsed Obama when her talk show was still running and popular. At the same time, MO is trying to sell her books and it makes sense to have Oprah talk about it.
I never found MO to be charismatic. I felt like she had a scolding tone. Yet, she was a dignified First Lady and didn't do anything embarrassing.
| by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 26, 2023 11:32 PM |
Michelle left law practice after two years for highly remunerative political and then community liaison type jobs for the University of Chicago. Sasha and Malia live in LA, where Malia works as a writer for Swarm and Sasha is still in school. I see no reason to venerate any of them as they cash in and see no evidence of public service.. Barack is busy building the library no one wants,
So, yes, it's not surprising Michelle ghosted her friends. As a world-class opportunist, it would be surprising if she didn't. I think she was perfectly fine as a First Lady, light years above the whore who followed her but I'm not inclined to throw any money in the direction of her books, personal appearances or films. Any association with Oprah is poison, as far as I'm concerned.
