Matthew Rhys is the new Perry Mason, except Perry Mason is now a private investigator in 30s Los Angeles

What terrible caps. They look like dentures.

Perry Mason was originally written in the 1930s. There were Perry mason movies & a radio series. The movies had him marrying Della Street and having a sidekick named “Spudsy” Drake.

The show was recast in 1973 with Monte Markham as Perry Mason. Lasted a year.

Hamilton Burger tells Perry in one book “You’re a better investigator than you are a lawyer.”

Good thing they didn't cast a woman as Perry.

R3 Yep the first movie was in 1934, here is the trailer. Also, the radio show wasn't just a show but a five day a week daytime mystery soap opera. When CBS wanted to bring it to television the author said no because he wanted a less soapy nighttime version. So CBS ended up with Perry Mason in primetime, and then they basically ripped off the radio soap for The Edge of Night.

Are all lawyers or private investigators that ugly?

by Anonymousreply 6January 14, 2019 8:43 PM

Matthew Rhys is an Everyman ....kind of a Welsh Jimmy Stewart with more range

by Anonymousreply 7January 14, 2019 8:45 PM

"Everyman" won the ugly contest. He better have some good acting skills.

He’s banging Keri Russell. I think he’s pretty happy with his looks

And what’s wrong with that bitch?

by Anonymousreply 10January 14, 2019 8:57 PM

Matthew Rhys is one of those actors who is better-looking in motion than in still photos. Also, he has a talent and charisma that automatically bump him up a couple of notches.

Would bang.

Eek! He's looking terrible!

by Anonymousreply 12January 14, 2019 10:21 PM

I think it’s a good idea.

R5, thanks for the background on "the many lives of Perry Mason". The character's longevity was incredible... books, radio, movies and of course, TV. Incredible that at some point Perry married Della (snort!). I've read a few of the Earl Stanley Gardner books and Perry, Della and Paul really come across as a throuple. Paul's the private eye in the books, but Perry's no slouch in setting up the suspicious.

The Edge of Night - amazing that the spin-off from Perry had a life on the radio and then decades on TV. It's the only soap to annually murder someone and then host a trial. there was always a mystery in Monicello.

I've got no opinion about the re-boot, Rhys is fine actor, the period could mean a good looking show with fashionable dames, men in suits and some noir.

Crappy wine, “new, improved bottle!” PASS.

by Anonymousreply 15January 14, 2019 10:33 PM

My grandpappy was horrified that his beloved Perry Mason was made into a 1950s, rich TV lawyer. Not very noir! He refused to watch and only read the books, watched the old movies and listened to tapes of the radio show.

He showed those slick Hollywooders that this Perry Mason fan would not be modernized.

I always thought he was cute/handsome. These recent photos are not flattering. Good actor.

by Anonymousreply 17January 14, 2019 10:38 PM

Does this mean Paul Drake will be the lawyer?

by Anonymousreply 18January 14, 2019 10:43 PM

Lesbo here.

He's one of the few men that I call gorgeous.

Watch him in Scapegoat.

by Anonymousreply 19January 14, 2019 10:44 PM

I agree, his teeth are terrible fakes. Did he get them done in UK?

by Anonymousreply 20January 14, 2019 10:45 PM

I find him equal parts hideous and handsome. In interviews, he's absolutely delightful. Great personality. So incredibly good on The Americans.

by Anonymousreply 21January 14, 2019 10:48 PM

They couldn’t get Raymond Burr to do it?

Of course he is aging, but aging badly for 44.

by Anonymousreply 24January 14, 2019 10:56 PM

I misread OP's title and thought the reboot was a 30-something Perry Mason in LA. LOL, I thought, not with that hairline.

by Anonymousreply 25January 14, 2019 10:57 PM

The first thing I noticed were his fake teeth. They look terrible. Ugh, he so cute, even with hair loss in his 40's. But the teeth.....ruin it all :.(

by Anonymousreply 27January 14, 2019 10:58 PM

I really like the idea of setting it in the 1930s.
