No death count yet? I read somewhere that in wartime, deaths just stop mattering.

I hate to confess it, but I just don't care much any more. Yes, there will be death every day, in schools, stores, restaurants, parks, medical clinics, churches, walking down the street. It's a war zone.

But we have the Internet - why does anybody go out to these public places anyway? At least if we just ordered in, we'd pay those goddamned Republican gun nuts back by making them go out of business (every businessman I've ever known is a heartless Republican), so there's the silver lining.

There’s a really graphic up-close video of the killer laying on the ground after he was shot in the head, taken with someone’s phone through the window of a restaurant. Go to Twitter if you want to see it. There’s blood all over him but he has what looks like an AK weapon next to him, belts and pouched filled with other weapons, all black, it’s like SWAT team gear.

This is why the so-called "Left"'s likewise obsession with getting all "kumbaya" and bringing in the social workers/defunding the police schtick is only going to backfire eventually and push our society to endorse giving all the "good guys" guns to defend themselves with in the event of such continuing mass shootings, a.k.a. including in religious institutions, public school settings, etc.

I totally get it that there are many unhelped, untreated mentally ill people in our society who need funding and assistance to get better. But that will likely take longer than the lifetimes of many more victims who will be shot, because if someone wants to get a gun, be they either mentally or criminally enough disposed to, they will find a way to get their guns -- and then shoot the victims that their mental problems or hate fuel.

So I didn't think I'd ever say it, but I'm beginning to think that general society should be armed proactively and offensively, too, yes. And that does frighten me, because there could be the "Barney Fife" syndrome thing where someone well-intentioned, or unchecked-proned to fly off the handle, could become overzealous or overwhelmed and start shooting the very people they're supposed to be protecting. But it seems lately, unfortunately, that's a chance to take that's being seriously overwhelmed by a greater number of these types of attacks now becoming endemic. And the killers tracking themselves being spotlighted and discussed on media while they're doing it, doesn't do anything to deter them, but rather just encourages their naricissistic and copy-cat tendencies, IMO.

I'm buying a titanium pantsuit collection to wear 24 hours around-the-clock.

Reading R19’s post. Assuming it’s meant to be sarcastic. But on second thought, it’s likely to be legitimate. Stand Your Ground seems more and more to equate to Me First Consequences Be Damned.

I can’t be the only one here who feels like the almost constant reports of shootings puts one into something like a state of high alert with no relief. No, I’m not really fearful when I go out. Not at all. Well, except when I am.

A few years ago we had to take Active Shooter training at work. What did we learn? How to barricade a door with furniture. The importance of staying out of the sight line created by the door’s window.

I recall asking the trainer, “What if the shooter is in my room?”

Her reply? “Pray.”

Useless.

I know I’m just rambling. But seriously, how does a sane person process the constant violence when there’s no sign of hope for change?

I was actually naive enough to think legislators would take serious action after the Newtown CT shootings. Obama’s speech in the aftermath of the attack drove me to tears.

Now I have no expectations that we’ll find the will to fight this epidemic of violence. None at all. But I feel bad about myself for being unable to summon any optimism at this point. This is not how I want to live.

Can we not get a think tank of security experts, mental health experts, lawyers, constitution experts, epidemiologists, gun manufacturers, insurance adjusters to get together and figure out a solution to prevent this?

It doesn't take all those people? We're going to leave it to venting frustration on social media and letting politicians decide and debate and at the end of the day doing nothing because they know that they're well insulated from this, and the chance of it happening to them is very low.

There was a public forum after Parkland but what did that amount to? Moving the needle?

Let's get some brains on this like it's a NASA project for God's sakes. Where are the brilliant minds of America? Do we not have any anymore?

Nine people dead, three in critical condition, despite an incredibly swift response by an officer already at the mall on an unrelated call. Imagine if he wasn’t there to neutralize the shooter. It’s scary how 9 dead, multiple hispitalized is the best-case scenario when a “good guy with a gun” is nearby.

I have wondered if a Republican politician's mind would change if one of their loved ones was left severely disabled due to a gunshot wound. Then again, I don't think they would care. I watched that Gabby Giffords documentary on CNN. a few months back. There are contradictions in accounts of the shooting; some witnesses say it looked like he randomly targeted people, but others say he cornered a family of four and shot them all execution-style. The others may have been caught in the crossfire.

Could it be the family was his main target, while the others were caught in the crossfire? Especially if he’s a gang member (as theorized by Redditors) because they usually kill for gang reasons. He may have been planning to flee after finishing off the family, but was not aware of the cop on site who thankfully got to him before he had any chance to escape.

A targeted hit seems plausible, R81. The main carnage was in that small area outside H&M—five bodies.

You'd think the typical mass shooter would want to make a statement and go for a more populated area.

But if it was a hit, why did he get out of the car? He was taken out on the sidewalk some distance from where he originally pulled up and fired. Why not just drive away after the hit? If he wanted to take out just one family, why not do it when they were driving home/all at their house?

8 more dead, including a 5 year old child and nobody cares. How many dead tomorrow? The day after? The day after that? And nobody cares or does anything about it. This gun violence is becoming incrementally worse and very quickly. Things weren't this bad 2 years ago.

One of the worst things about it all is watching all the authorities pretending to care in press conferences. Absolutely bizarre. Nobody cares.

On any given day you could send your kids to school and have them mowed down by a machine gun or go to the supermarket to get some bread and milk and never come back. Those are the facts now.

How can this be any way to live?

Part of the problem is that the NRA was so successful in convincing people that the 2nd Amendment allows gun ownership by the citizenry specifically as a check on government so they can use their guns to overthrow a sitting government. Funny how the Founding Fathers neglected to lay out a protocol for how to form a true "people'" government in that event.

Of course, it's a total nonsense. But the idea has been embedded very deeply in the otherwise vapid minds of gun owners.

Here's something I'm curious about. In several of these mass shootings, and especially this one at a mall, the shooter was all dressed up in combat gear, carrying an assault rifle. He didn't just pop up out of nowhere. He had to park his car and walk into the mall. People had to see him.

Shooter was another loser, living at home with his mommy. No money to live on his own but money for expensive firearms, ammo, and body armor.

"WFAA: FBI went to home of suspected Allen, Texas mall shooter after shooting today. Home is in Dallas, where suspect lived with his parents. Neighbors described suspect as quiet, kept to himself, sometimes exhibited unusual behavior."

Texas is an open carry state and there no way to tell an upstanding citizen from a guy carrying a AR-15 gun into a public place intent on murdering people. It’s a conundrum. Should I exit the store or find a place to hide, or should I thank a good guy with a gun keeping everyone safe in the event of a would-be massacre? I think out of abundance of caution I would do the first.

We have open carry in my state and one of my customers dressed in head to toe tacticool clothing, NRA buttons that I assume are membership gifts and of course his guns. He did it after every major mass shooting. One day a delivery driver was in with a full handtruck and one of its tires exploded. Like a gunshot. We both flinched and laughed and my next thought was thank god my biggest ammosexual customer wasn't in because he would've opened up a crossfire. I talk about NRA in the past tense because the last time I saw him he was clearly on chemo and could barely walk. Hope he went to the big gunsafe in the sky

quite honestly I think our diversity helps keep us from going to white people wars like the Troubles or the Ukrainians vs. the Russians. Actually, they put votes and profits on behalf of their campaign contributors above everything else. "they" includes some Dems and Bernie Sanders.

Even in Dallas the local news, which is right of center, wasn’t identifying the guy. The authorities didn’t release very much information for several hours. If you look at the post-shooting footage of people staggering around, dazed, interviewed by reporters you’ll see immigrants of all stripes— Africans, Indians, East Asians, Hispanics, along with the garden variety Texans. Crying. In shock. Second-gen kids are a dime a dozen here, most don’t mow people down with semiautomatic weapons.

Switzerland is the only western country that has comparable per capita gun ownership to the US. However, the guns are heavy regulated, they are required to take lessons, get appropriate license, keep their guns properly secured. They respect responsibility that comes with gun ownership. Those with criminal background or mental issues cannot get access to them. The Swiss have a civilized approach to guns. The US has none of that, just shit for brains.

We need to treat guns like cars. You have to have a license and get it renewed periodically. YOur gun should be registered with a serial number on a national registry. Even Private sales of guns have to be regulated as private sales of cars are. With some kind of "title transfer." Before you can buy a gun you have to go through training. You have to have continuing education periodically. Say every 3-5 years. And no one under 21 should buy or own a gun. Any modifications to a gun that makes it an automatic should be banned. Large magazines and bumper stocks banned. People with mental health issues should not own a gun. People with a criminal record for violent crimes should not own a gun. There should be a waiting period and background checks. And I would confiscate every single automatic weapon out here. Give people an amnesty period to turn in their automatic weapons. After that they will be heavily fined if they're in possession of one/. And promote snitching. "If you see something say something" for automatic weapons. military gear bullet proof vests and other military grade combat clothing or gear should get your name put on a national database. And finally, if we have to re-activate the Patriots act against domestic terrorists do it, and use it to take down all the websites and conspiracy sites that foment hate speech and conspiracies, including racism, homophobia, anti immigrant, anti women, etc.etc. We need a major crackdown.
