R116 I know Joy is a compassionate and sympathetic person and so I can allow her grace, but she put her whole foot in her mouth Whoopi style with that remark. It just sounded elitist and ignorant and self-centered. It did come across not only as if she was lamenting a luxurious vacation she can't take, but more offensively, she didn't even acknowledge the people of Ukraine who are being bombed and trying to escape with their lives. I like Joy a lot and I watched with my mouth agape thinking, wow, Joy is really out of touch now. She didn't just limit her comment to wanting to vacation in western Europe but also to worrying about their safety...but not even a thought about the people of Ukraine, as if eastern Europeans are not worth her time. 😔
It made me sad because Joy has a huge heart and it was obviously just a poorly worded thought, but I can't shake the feeling now that she regards the people of eastern Europe as subhuman or at least as not worth caring about, even if that's not really how she feels. I am bothered that she didn't clarify the remark the next day.
The difference between Joy, Whoopi and Meghan, though, is that Joy and Whoopi do care about people and Meghan cares about Meghan and about the Republican party's dominance.
Joy seems to care about groups of people, like a classic Republican. She usually (Ukraine notwithstanding) speaks up for underrepresented demographics.
Whoopi seems to empathize with individuals who get themselves in trouble, and in doing so, she gets herself in trouble. Accused criminals and abusers often get her vote of support because "we don't really know what happened, y'all." And she is wrong far more often than she is right.
Meghan McCain, needless to say because it's a meme, cares about Meghan McCain. She cares about her dead father's name...as time passed, I began to think her obsession with him was more about his political influence/celebrity than about her actual love for her father. She said countless times, probably over 100 times in the several years she was on The View, that she cares about the GOP winning at any cost. She cares about the NRA. Everything she cares about is self-serving or political. The only exceptions to her outspokenness are for Jewish Americans for some reason and LGBT people. She has received awards from both Jewish and LGBT advocacy groups and she has done paid speaking gigs to both audiences, so there's a motivation.
(To be clear, when I say McCain supports Jewish Americans 'for some reason,' I am not suggesting that there are not good reasons to do so; I am just saying it's out of character for someone who only cares about her own self-interests and her partisan holdings.)
