OP!! I’m one of John’s biggest fans. I’ve followed his career since it began on SANTA BARBARA. He had a pretty good run - 34 years of steady acting work. He has, or did have, one of the most incredible upper bodies I’ve ever seen, especially his chest. I even bought HUNK on VHS for God’s sake. So many great clips I could post to thank you for recognizing him, but this is a favourite.

OP, I searched SANTA BARBARA episodes on YouTube and found this one from 1984 where he’s at the beach. He looks like a god.
R11, he’s married to his second wife. They have a child, only one that I’m aware of. He has a son and daughter from a previous marriage. I’ve never heard of him having relationships with men.

I liked him on Baywatch. The show was silly for the most part but I thought the first two seasons were actually decent and well-written. Then it became really silly. By then Nelson would guest star occasionally. I got the sense they thought he was too old so they went with younger actors.
I miss Santa Barbara.
