One of the best performances ever. Kim Stanles (The Goddess), Vivien Leigh ("Gone with the Wind" and "A Streetcar Named Desire"), Elizabeth Taylor (" Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf) and Marilyn Monroe ("Bud Stop", "The Misfits" and "Niagra") level.
The haters just can't stand that she broke Meryl's record with her win.
The only a actress that comes close in '94 is Crissy Rock in "Ladybird, Ladybird".

Irony is that if Linda Fiorentino had been nominated for The Last Seduction, Linda would have won the Oscar. But she was disqualified because the movie ran on cable before it had its theatrical release.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 23, 2016 9:41 PM |
R27 lol. What an adorable delusion.
If Linda had qualified, she would've *maybe* reached 5th place.
This was Lange's as soon as it was announced that Orion in all of its bankruptcy laden glory would be releasing "Blue Sky" and pushing Lange for the win.
Besides, Fiorentino is great but not amazing like Lange. Lange had to cover every emotional facet from flirting to raging as Carly Marshall. Fiorentino just had to wear black and be seductively snarky, lol.
If anyone has to win over Lange, I would've chosen Crissy Rock or Sigourney Weaver in "Death and the Maiden". Still, neither held a candle to Lange.
The LA Critics, renowned for being selective and for their foreign picks, awarded Lange. She came in 2nd for NY and a most others. But the Globes cemented her win. That reception once she's announced.

EXCUSE ME but Linda won New York Film Critics Circle Awards that year and was nominated for the BAFTA best Actress that year as well.
She was the talk of Hollywood about getting nominated, but then got disqualified.
From Wiki
Fiorentino's performance generated talk of an Oscar nomination, but she was ineligible because the film was shown on HBO before it was released to theatres. October Films and ITC Entertainment sued the Academy, but were unable to make Fiorentino eligible for a nomination.[2]

I knew Lange would win the Oscar too. Foster won the first SAG award. I personally think Foster was phenomenal in Nell but it was too soon to give her a third and Nell received VERY mixed reviews. Rock should've been nominated no doubt. Sarandon and Ryder were filler nominations but Miranda Richardsons was totally deserved. Plus Langes body of work in the 80s I think helped cement her win.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 23, 2016 11:38 PM |
I've heard that Linda was an absolute terror to work, that she was hated by casts and crews and that her career tanked as a result. She literally disappeared without a trace.
Even if she'd been nominated she wouldn't have won. She would have had no support from voters.

I never really understood the overwhelming praise for Linda Fiorentino's performance in The Last Seduction. I enjoyed the movie and her performance, but she was a snarky ennuyée and unmitigated bitch throughout, which, it turns out was no real stretch for her. It was fascinating watching her make mincemeat of the dumb men that surrounded her, but there was no real character evolution. Just a sociopath doing dirty deeds to get from point A to point B. Lange, at least, was brimming with female rage underneath the beauty queen exterior, went off the rails, and came back again, which required real acting chops. The movie, however, was mediocre fare.

R45 The only reason Meryl won is because they knew they could give it to Lange for a critically acclaimed, box office smash whilst still awarding Streep.

Would she still have won had Orion not gone bankrupt and it had been released in 1991 when Jodie Foster won for [italic]Silence of the Lambs[/italic], which was released right before the bankruptcy filing? I was thinking about that the other day.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 25, 2016 3:36 PM |
Foster wasn't losing that year. And Orion released both movies, so they probably would have only really campaigned for Foster. Lange probably would have edged out either Midler or Dern for a nomination, but she wouldn't have won that year (or, to be honest, any other year).
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 25, 2016 4:13 PM |
The only reason Orion released Blue Sky in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings was because they knew they had an Academy Award-winning performance from Jessica Lange. It was also the last film from British helmer Tony Richardson who had died of AIDS in post-production. Carly Marshall was a Tennessee Williams heroine trapped in a subpar script by William Inge.

| by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 26, 2016 6:06 PM |
R57 you're the one who said Lange wouldn't of won in 1991 or any other year. YOUR WORDS. Agreed she couldn't of toppled Foster in 1991. The only reason I believe Blue Sky had a theatrical release in 1994 was the great performance by Lange was the only good thing the film had going for it. This, coupled with Langes body of work for over a decade, helped her cinch the Oscar. If it wasn't believed that Lange had a decent chance at winning it would've been released straight to video.
| by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 26, 2016 6:17 PM |
In any other year but the one in which she did win, R58. I think most people here would not have needed me to add that to understand what I wrote.

You're out of your mind. I realize that it's "the thing" to be a Meryl hater on DL, but the Oscar was Meryl's that year regardless of the competition. She would have beaten anyone in any year.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 26, 2016 6:35 PM |
"Love Field" was another Orion film that sat on the shelf for a couple years before being released, and it got an Oscar nomination for Michelle Pfeiffer. As much as I love Emma Thompson, the winner for "Howard's End", I thought LF offered one of Pfeiffer's very best performances and I remember hoping she would win. (I also think that Thompson gave a much better performance the following year in another Merchant Ivory film, "The Remains of the Day.")
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 26, 2016 6:42 PM |
R59 and most people except for a Lange hater like yourself apparently wouldn't agree you could stick Lange in ANY best actress line up from any year and she would lose. | by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 5, 2018 5:25 PM |
I (kind of) like the movie and I love Jessica Lange (Tootsie is on right now) but '94 was not the strongest year. I'm glad Lange won, but Jodie Foster in Nell is just as deserving.
I can't stand The Goddess. Stanley does not fit the mold of 50's movie star and all she does is cry and break down for half the movie. Paddy Chayefsky's worst movie, that I've seen anyway. Stanley was a tragic soul. The method really messed a lot of already damaged people up. She had to live the performance and it drove her crazy. She often missed performances and was a mess. When the work dried up after her initial (positive) debut she would drink herself into a stupor and act to walls in her rundown NYC apartment. Not being dramatic.
Have you seen the version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with Lange, Tommy Lee Jones, Rip Torn and Kim Stanley? It's very good. I think it's still available on youtube. It ran on showtime in the 80's.
Maybe I'm missing something, Lange often says she puts on "The Goddess" while preparing for a role. Calls it perfect screen acting. I still don't get it.

| by Anonymous | reply 97 | February 5, 2018 6:19 PM |
R97 Lange has done fine. Once she hit her stride in the early 80's she did very well for about 12 years. She even says that until Grey Gardens for HBO and her big tv revivial her work wasn't very good.
| by Anonymous | reply 98 | February 5, 2018 7:05 PM |
I think that if Fiorentino had been nominated she definitely would've made it a more competitive category but Lange still would've won. The whole point of releasing Blue Sky was because it was well known that Orion had an Oscar-winning performance from Jessica Lange sitting on the shelf for two years because of their bankruptcy problems. There was never any question that if they could get Blue Sky released, Lange would win the Oscar.
Imagine how she must've felt, knowing she had this career best work that might never be seen.
| by Anonymous | reply 99 | February 5, 2018 10:48 PM |
There never was any guarantee Lange would have won for Blue Sky. The year she won was one of the weakest best actress fields in modern history. Had her movie been released in 1995, she probably would have lost. I never liked her in movies. Camp TV horror suits her the best

Jessica is sometimes great but often campy. She usually does the same character (horny crazy broad) over and over again. Audiences did not dig her in movies, and she was phased out in the 90’s after a string of flops. RyanMurphy did her a giant solid by putting her in AHS and that play that he produced for her. I continually hear that CAA has had trouble finding her projects. She is going to do the final season of AHS but with a million other actors.
| by Anonymous | reply 109 | February 6, 2018 6:25 AM |

Lange played Fiorentino's beautifully in Coven and won an Emmy for it, too.

Bullshit R56. I saw Blue Sky at the old Galaxy theatre on Hollywood Blvd. it got a theatrical release. And this began her long string of breathy horny old woman screaming and stomping on ALL the scenery performances she does in everything to this day on her television resume. The late great Gene Siskel really pushed for Winona Ryder who was as refreshing, spirited and thoughtful of a Joe as had ever been filmed without sinking into dykey and boyish emulation that Hepburn and June Allison both espoused. I liked Linda Florentino also and think she woulda had a shot had she qualified. Ryder was not a fill in spot. She probably placed either 2nd or third in the final tally. One of her finest work. Music Box was Lange's last truly great screen performance.

I don't think it was bought. The Tonys LOVE when movie people go "slumming" to Broadway and usually bend over backwards to nominate them so they come to the ceremony, and they usually give them the award so it culminates in even more press the day after. No because you say so, she's unemployed. LMAO!
I'll repeat: you're sad, pathetic, tragic and retarded, Matthew.

One of the worst performances to win Best Actress ever. So unbearably hammy -- is as every performance she's ever given post-KING KONG.
| by Anonymous | reply 140 | February 9, 2018 5:55 PM |
Not nearly as bad as the performance you're giving here, Matty R140.
| by Anonymous | reply 141 | February 9, 2018 5:57 PM |
Oh, no, that's not me. I've only just seen this thread and posted on it, R141. I haven't even read it. I'm just, I presume, another Lange critic.
| by Anonymous | reply 142 | February 9, 2018 6:00 PM |
R143 Ordinarily, Sarandon would've won.. She was nominated for a box office hit after starring in a string of them and she was Oscarless.
The Academy made the right choice which was also an iconoclastic one, too.
| by Anonymous | reply 144 | February 9, 2018 6:25 PM |
After her embarrasing Crawford, it's not news to anyone that Lange's career is over.
| by Anonymous | reply 145 | February 9, 2018 6:48 PM |
R141 can't process that anyone but a loon would think Lange is massively overrated.
And no, Sarandon was never going to win for The Client. The only reason she was nominated was the weak category that year (though there were some excellent performances to pull from if the Academy hadn't been so fucking lazy- Fiorentino, as mentioned (it was a bullshit rule and if it had been a more Academy friendly actress or a major studio, she'd have gotten in), Jennifer Jason Leigh for Mrs. Parker, Kathleen Turner for Serial Mom and Judy Davis for The Ref were all miles above Lange and pretty much everyone else who was nominated, which were Jodie Foster's execrable performance in Nell, Sarandon doing nothing in The Client, Miranda Richardson filling another space for Tom & Viv and Winona Ryder... well, call it the Pretty Woman nomination. All five were undeserving.
| by Anonymous | reply 146 | February 9, 2018 6:49 PM |
Lange is so over the top in Blue Sky. It's an unconvincing performance. They gave it to her because they knew her career was pretty much over.
| by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 9, 2018 6:53 PM |
All kidding aside, it's one of the worst performances to ever win an Oscar. Not quite Jennifer Hudson awful (no one could ever touch that) but it's up there with Chuck Heston for Ben Hur.

Such a perfect Oscar winner

Poor Jessica gets kicked around like a beanbag. I do find it interesting that she has not been a movie star for 25 years. This performance is so much like an AHS character so she found her zenith on TV. I feel bad her Joan was a mess because no one will ever watch that series
| by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 10, 2018 3:02 AM |
You’re nuts, r150. Her Joan was outstanding and people did indeed watch that series. What world do you live in? Jess helped redeem Joan from the horrors of Mommie Dearest and Faye’s trashy performance..
| by Anonymous | reply 151 | February 10, 2018 3:06 AM |
I mean no one besides you would ever seek it out and sit through the whole camp mess - eight hours right? Ugh
| by Anonymous | reply 152 | February 10, 2018 3:08 AM |
Stop trying to make Linda Fiorentino happen. The Last Seduction was a wretched film. There’s a reason her career never amounted to much and has been effectively over for almost ten years.
| by Anonymous | reply 153 | February 10, 2018 3:10 AM |
Aw, it’s cute and kind of nutty that you’re trying to rewrite history (a loon’s job, certainly?), but “Feud” did well and Lange was widely praised for her performance. I was hardly the only one watching.

Yes there is. She was notoriously difficult to deal with. But that has nothing to do with the fact that she outacted Lange by miles.
| by Anonymous | reply 156 | February 10, 2018 3:15 AM |
Dunaway was so awful in MD that almost nothing could bring Joan back from kitsch heaven. But Lange came close, and all critics (but no loons) agreed.
| by Anonymous | reply 157 | February 10, 2018 3:19 AM |
Jessica was nothing like Joan. That was a made up character as imagined by Jess and Ryan Murphy so they could play their version of dolls

| by Anonymous | reply 160 | February 10, 2018 3:46 AM |
I agree that Bedknobs and Broomsticks and God's Own Country were awful, but nothing compares to the truyy disastrous Crawford that Jessica Lange played in Feud.

Blue Sky was awful. And she was awful in it. Stop fucking lying because you like her. I love Jessica Lange but the movie and her cheap TV performance was just as bad. There's a reason it sat on a shelf for 3 years. It's wasn't brilliant marketing ploys by Orion. The movie is embarrassing. Chris O'Donnelll and Amy Locane subplot was far more interesting. Jodie, Winona and JJL in Mrs Parker were far better once you disqualified Linda Fiorentino. Who would have won and had every major critic behind her. A grade A femme fatale performance. As good as Ms Stanwyck.

"Blue Sky" was actually based on screenwriter Rama Laurie Stagner's parents and childhood. Also, the fact that you don't get what "Blue Sky"'s message was is indicative of your emotional as much as it is your intellectual retardation.

Smell you. Yes I get what the "goal" of the message was. But it was not accomplished. The movie became trite and obvious as it unfolded. I only ever felt urgency at the plight of the young lovers story more than the A plot. The Powers Booth subplot was typical and handled just as generic as the film. You obviously don't have very high standards in storytelling.

What's amazing about Lange's work in BLUE SKY is the combination of grit and glamour she brings to the role. I don't think any other actress could've brought the force, conviction and beauty that she brought to this role. It's beyond thrilling, even over 20 years later, to think that the Academy awarded her for her work here.
Totally deserving, totally surprising and totally perfect.

TOM's write up is great.
The original story for Blue Sky was created by co-screenwriter Rama Laurie Stagner, who based Carly and Hank on the emotionally fraught relationship she observed between her own parents when she was growing up. She also took cues from an unpublished memoir by her father, who was indeed a safety officer for an underground atomic test in Nevada in 1962. "The explosion wasn't supposed to come out of the ground," he recalled for an Arizona newspaper when Blue Sky was released, "but it did. It blew out the side of a mesa, and I knew it was my duty to fly in there in a helicopter and check the extent of what happened." As in the movie, he spoke up about what went wrong and the terrible impact it had on people near the blast, but ran into indifference and resistance from higher officers.
Stagner used herself as the model for Alex Marshall, the older daughter in the film, and gave this character some of the snappiest dialogue. "He's blind and she's crazy. They're perfect for each other," Amy says, describing her parents' stubborn inability to get their wobbly relationship in order. Hank is also quite articulate at times, as when he tries to explain Carly's volatility by saying she's kind of like water, which changes from liquid to solid to gas without altering its basic properties. Carly and younger daughter Becky get off some zingers too.

Jessica winning Best Actress at the 1995 Oscars. At the end of her speech she thanks her 3 kids, but she does not thank Sam Shepard.
Lange also thanks the movie's director Tony Richardson. He died of AIDS in November 1991, 3 years before "Blue Sky" was released. Richardson was married to actress Vanessa Redgrave from 1962 to 1967. The couple had two daughters, Natasha (1963–2009) and Joely Richardson (born 1965), both actresses.
