Jessica Chastain's Oscar Speech

Coming late to this as I didn't watch live. What did you think of her reaching out to LGBTQ? She appeared so earnest and at least she didn't list 20 people we had never heard of. Also like her condemnation of violence whilst giving side-eye to Will.

I thought her acceptance speech was one of the best given. I didn't see the movie and am not that familiar with her work, but her speech seemed exceptionally sincere and intelligently delivered. As a result, I want to see her movie.

by Anonymousreply 1March 31, 2022 3:21 AM

R1 I agree. She gave one of the best speeches in the last 20 years. She overcame the indignity of the show

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2022 3:23 AM

After what that thug did on that show, her speech was pure grace and dignity. And I will always be grateful to her! No joke.

Her film was not great, but her Tammy Faye was awesome and the film did have some great moments. She totally deserved this award over the other nominees, and I am so happy that she won.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2022 3:27 AM

I agree R3 she may not give the best performance of the century but she is beyond her competitors.

by Anonymousreply 4March 31, 2022 3:30 AM

Jessica Chastain said when the nominations were announced, she sent all the women in her category flowers

While Nicole Kidman sent Champagne to all the women as well

by Anonymousreply 5March 31, 2022 3:32 AM

What did Olivia Colman send them?

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2022 3:35 AM

Wonderful. She's a good girl.

by Anonymousreply 8March 31, 2022 3:48 AM

She was brilliant. The spirit of Tammy Faye spoke through her.

R5 What about transwomen?

by Anonymousreply 12March 31, 2022 7:40 AM

Jessica did well to give some humanity to a cartoonish character. Not an easy task.

by Anonymousreply 14March 31, 2022 7:48 AM

Oh I just laughed a the clip they played for Kristen Stewart.

by Anonymousreply 15March 31, 2022 8:00 AM

I've always been a fan of Jessica Chastain and only love her more after the Oscars. I look forward to watching her film now that it's starting to be available to stream where I live.

by Anonymousreply 16March 31, 2022 8:04 AM

SHE WON! For that shit? Oof.

by Anonymousreply 17March 31, 2022 10:51 AM

I love her actually. I've only seen 3 of the nominated performances but definitely think hers was the best - she's always amazing in everything she does and seems to be a thoroughly good person, glad she won.

P.s. Jennifer Garner looked absolutely stunning in that brief flash of her. I have such a girl-crush on her.

by Anonymousreply 18March 31, 2022 11:54 AM

Same, R16.

I think she's one of the few actresses these days that has old-school, movie star glamor.

by Anonymousreply 20March 31, 2022 12:16 PM

I thought it was rather taking for Wanda Sykes to do a bit in which she described Tammy Faye as a “crazy woman” in light of Jessica’s portrayal

by Anonymousreply 21March 31, 2022 12:27 PM

I would have liked it better if she had said:

“Tammy Faye was one of the most talented televangelists ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Evangelical Christianity. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs."

by Anonymousreply 22March 31, 2022 12:41 PM

Jessica is a good actress but I find her personality treacly and off-putting. That being said, her speech was pretty good—thoughtful, but not obnoxious. The comments about suicide were personal; I believe her sister killed herself years ago, before Jessica was famous.

by Anonymousreply 23March 31, 2022 2:06 PM

I thought it was rather tacky for Wanda Sykes to do a bit in which she described Tammy Faye as a “crazy woman” in light of Jessica’s sympathetic portrayal.

by Anonymousreply 24March 31, 2022 2:11 PM

She's an idiot ( her attempts to cancel Brando and ban Last Tango in Paris on twitter, among other idiot moves) but dumb people can be talented.

by Anonymousreply 25March 31, 2022 2:19 PM

I loved her speech. She was obviously quite emotional about winning and it just seemed so sincere and heartfelt. A beautiful moment that helped me forget the ugliness of what had just happened.

by Anonymousreply 26March 31, 2022 2:38 PM

I was rooting for her and Stewart (the others have Oscars already) and definitely happy for her win. Great speech indeed addressing suicide among the LGBTQ population

by Anonymousreply 27March 31, 2022 2:44 PM

There's NO treacle like YOUR treacle...jazzhands.

by Anonymousreply 28March 31, 2022 2:49 PM

Havent seen this movie yet but plan to. I don’t think anyone is mad at “Academy Award Winner Jessica Chastain” - gurl has earned it. Many, MANY great performances. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 29March 31, 2022 2:54 PM

She was also paying tribute to Tammy Faye's LGBTQ support. Regardless of what she did with her husband, doing that interview on her show was groundbreaking and she was genuine. I met Eric Estrada at a convention once after she died. He did a reality show with her and had a picture of them and the cast on the table. I pointed and said that was a tragedy how she suffered and he told me how she was the real deal and how she loved and embraced everyone. Jessica showed that in her movie.

by Anonymousreply 30March 31, 2022 3:04 PM

R20 “ I think she's one of the few actresses these days that has old-school, movie star glamor.”

….Which always involves bearding a European homo?

There’s more than a few actresses these days.

by Anonymousreply 31March 31, 2022 3:23 PM

^ I forgot about that reality show until you mentioned it— The Surreal Life . I had to look up the other cast in her season (season 2) with Vanilla Ice and Ron Jeremy among others. I wonder if she got a peek of that schlong

by Anonymousreply 32March 31, 2022 6:22 PM

Her speech was all right, it was reaching but sincerely delivered.

I’m tired of her trying to convince us all that Tammy Faye Bakker was some kind of AIDS activist who valiantly fought for a cure, more research and funding. She was not. That was the great Elizabeth Taylor. Tammy Faye was merely a footnote and her notoriety was based on defrauded the PTL followers out of millions. That’s what she was known for. I’m really tired of Chastain’s revisionism. She won her Oscar. I hope she shuts up about it now.

You can’t argue with her words but it’s hard to deliver a resonant speech for a film nobody saw and for those who did see it, nobody liked.

by Anonymousreply 33March 31, 2022 8:19 PM

Per rottentomatoes, plenty of people liked The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

I thought she'd win because she nailed the role of Tammy Faye. Her speech was beautifully delivered. Her personality is refreshing and a complete 180 from the Will Smith. Looking forward to seeing what else she can do.

by Anonymousreply 37April 1, 2022 2:50 AM

Jessica Chastain is one of my favorite actresses of today and one of the few (besides Kate Winslet and Nicole Kidman) who can carry off old Hollywood glamour.

She was amazing as Tammy Faye and despite all the digs about the movie not being good on here, I completely disagree. The movie shines in part because Jessica shines and really gets into the skin of her role. I'm so glad she has finally been recognized by the Academy considering how many times she's been snubbed in the past.

by Anonymousreply 38April 1, 2022 2:59 AM

R38- I mentioned above that the movie wasn't great. I actually watched it a 2nd time tonight, and its far better than I gave it credit for. Particularly the last 1/2..

Jessica's performance is even better the 2nd time around. And upon watching a 2nd time- I actually got teary like a little bitch in the last 20 minutes.

I don't want to spoil it because there wasn't much in the previews about this part of the film, but the post PTL scenes when Tammy is a little older are very effective and incredibly sad. I found Jessica extremely good in these scenes. She had a sadness in her eyes that only a great actress can pull off. It was not the makeup or prosthetics.

And I now want to give a shout out to Andrew Garfield- he actually did a fantastic job himself.

by Anonymousreply 39April 1, 2022 3:07 AM

Yes, she can really act. I didn't even know who she was before this role. It's nice to see someone talented and seemingly humble, win.

by Anonymousreply 40April 1, 2022 3:08 AM

R39 I'm so glad to hear you were able to change your mind after a rewatch and not ashamed of admitting that on here. Kudos for that.

I remember the days when Oscar winners often won, not for a single performance but for all the performances they had that year if it was a banner year for them. I feel Andrew Garfield should have won since besides his Oscar nominated role, he had this performance as well.

by Anonymousreply 41April 1, 2022 3:10 AM

R33 Tammy Faye was not an angel, but I do think it's difficult to argue that her welcoming attitude toward gay people was radical in the kind of Evangelical world she inhabited. Her attitude at the end of the day was to love everyone—she wasn't out there touting conversion camps or hellfire and brimstone. She had compassion for people, and strayed away from virtually all of her peers in the way she approached sex and sexuality. She may not have done the charity work that someone like Taylor did, but Tammy was, despite her flaws, someone who I think had genuine love for all people—and you frankly can't say that for many televangelists.

by Anonymousreply 42April 1, 2022 3:16 AM

I boycotted the Oscars this year but only tuned in for Jessica's win since I was expecting that. That aside, I didn't realize that the hosts used their time to disparage Tammy Faye by dismissing her as a crazy woman. Not only is it insensitive towards the real life woman (and women in general since I never hear men being labeled crazy, it's always the women) Tammy Faye but especially to Jessica Chastain.

The nuanced, compassionate performance she gave could easily have become a mockery or parody of the woman (looking at you Faye Dunaway with the way you tarnished Joan Crawford for so many years) but it wasn't. You can tell Jessica instilled respect in her role as Tammy whether she believed exactly as Tammy did or not. So the fact that these three hacks, and women themselves so one would think they'd be naturally more sympathetic, went out of their way to dismiss Tammy as a crazy woman just shows the utter lack of respect they had for Jessica's performance. For them, Jessica's role was nothing more than the crazy lady with the funny makeup.

Very cheap and disgusting antic.

by Anonymousreply 43April 1, 2022 3:18 AM

Honestly, only one thing sticks out about the show and I watched the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 44April 1, 2022 3:22 AM

I thought it was classy and lovely. She seemed very genuine and I think she’s beautiful and very talented.

Also, she grew up in some trailer park and married a handsome Italian prince… more power to her.

by Anonymousreply 45April 1, 2022 3:24 AM

I didn't like how they made fun of Tammy Faye either, and yes, I laughed at Chris' G.I. Jane joke. But at least Jada was there to defend herself, Tammy was not. It just seemed in poor taste to me.

I like Jessica. Yeah, she can be a little too much sometimes but she is extremely talented. I felt bad that she had to give a speech about love following that episode.

by Anonymousreply 46April 1, 2022 3:25 AM

Other great movies of hers I would recommend (besides The Help which most people seem to be familiar with her from) are: Miss Julie, Miss Sloane, The Zookeeper's Wife, and Crimson Peak.

by Anonymousreply 47April 1, 2022 3:29 AM

She was even great in that stupid Aaron Sorkin movie Molly’s Game.

by Anonymousreply 48April 1, 2022 3:31 AM

I didn't like Molly's Game but she was good in it. The only good thing about it.

by Anonymousreply 49April 1, 2022 3:32 AM

She made her film debut in the movie "Jolene" playing an exotic dancer and hooker

Tammy Faye was a crazy person. She was mentally ill. She and her closeted hubby hated gay people and this whitewashing of her history is bizarre to me.

by Anonymousreply 53April 1, 2022 4:23 AM

R53 She didn't hate gay people. They were her only friends by the end and the gay community adores her. You ought to be ashamed for tarnishing a dead woman's name.

by Anonymousreply 54April 1, 2022 4:24 AM

[quote]Tammy Faye was a crazy person. She was mentally ill. She and her closeted hubby hated gay people and this whitewashing of her history is bizarre to me.

Gee, all that for someone you never met.

by Anonymousreply 55April 2, 2022 5:57 PM

Tammy went on the gay circuit for years after her show. Her LGBT legacy should remember that phase. She loved the gays in a time when Christian’s did not do that. Look at Pat Robertson/700 club. That was ground zero for the anti-gay movement. So her contribution, wile it pales in comparison to Liz Taylor as far as money for the cause, TF really went out on a limb for those times. People forget about Tammy’s post-Jim “career”. Although it was cut short by her death, she was a regular figure in the 90’s LGBT circuit.

by Anonymousreply 56April 2, 2022 6:41 PM

Actually, make that the 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 57April 2, 2022 6:43 PM

Are Chastain's PR trolls working overtime on this site? I remember just a month ago people were (rightfully) trashing this desperate preachy middling talent. Being a "nice" person or giving a good speech doesn't make one worthy of an award. I saw the Tammy Faye movie two days ago, and it is fucking insane she got any critical praise for it, much less a nomination - she essentially did a pastiche of every Oscar winning baity biopic performance of the past twenty years. And how the fuck is she overdue? Isabelle Huppert, this closeted carpet muncher's "idol," is overdue.

by Anonymousreply 58April 3, 2022 12:51 AM

Jessica attended the Oscar two hours early to sit in the auditorium to cheer on the make-up awards presentations as they were nominated for the film and won

by Anonymousreply 61April 3, 2022 3:05 AM

She dares to talk about violence after watching Will's assault. Did she stand for him when he won? Her speech is a word salad.

by Anonymousreply 64April 3, 2022 6:39 AM

Great dress to win in! I'm here for her win as Tammy Faye.

by Anonymousreply 65April 3, 2022 6:41 AM

Jason Momoa has ugly stubby fingers at 1:26 in OPs clip. and what's he wearing on them?

by Anonymousreply 67April 3, 2022 6:54 AM

She became famous in her mid-30s, kinda pretty late for an actress. That is probably why she is humble and down to earth. She is one of the few Hollywood actresses that are universally liked

by Anonymousreply 68April 3, 2022 7:11 AM

Reply 60, that SNL skit is hilarious. "Jimbo's fifteen minute trip to the Lucky Stiff Motel".

And you are right, Jan Hook was good as Tammy. They make comedy look easy.

by Anonymousreply 69April 3, 2022 7:12 AM

R69 Jan Hooks and Phil Hartman will forever be Queen and King of SNL to me.

by Anonymousreply 70April 3, 2022 2:50 PM

Closeted hubby? Wasn't there a huge scandal because he was caught with a woma in a hotel?

by Anonymousreply 71April 3, 2022 2:51 PM

Did Chastain herself state they'd she'd suffered permanent damage to her skin due to the Tammy Faye makeup? Not sure how they can then turn around and be awarded an Oscar for that.

by Anonymousreply 72April 3, 2022 6:39 PM

This will always be considered one of the weakest Best Actress winners in Oscar history. At least Jessica Lange gave a GOOD performance in Blue Sky.

by Anonymousreply 73April 3, 2022 6:40 PM

If Glenn had a decent role this last year she would have won.

by Anonymousreply 74April 3, 2022 8:08 PM

[quote]Are Chastain's PR trolls working overtime on this site?

No. The rightwing trolls hate her and start threads about her being a "cunt" and an "SJW." You can tell they aren't regular DLers because the threads are full of "dyke" as an insult. But even with those old threads, after the initial spate of "dyke SJW cunt" replies, other real people would weigh in and they didn't hate her, they were either neutral on her or kind of liked her.

Once she got the nomination and win, more regular DLers spoke up. It was no longer only the trolls posting about her, but now the trolls are mad because there are some positive comments, which is completely normal, considering her recent Oscar win. They keep saying it's secret PR people posting about her, but sorry, it's not.

by Anonymousreply 75April 3, 2022 8:22 PM

She deserved to win over Jennifer Lawrence in 2012, if it couldn't have been Emmanuelle Riva.

by Anonymousreply 76April 3, 2022 8:27 PM

[quote] If Glenn had a decent role this last year she would have won.

It is strange because she had a chance to beat two actresses who are non-American

Olivia Colman and Youn Yuh-jung - If Glenn beat either of them, it is doubtful anyone would be complaining. As the narrative would have been "Glenn is due, it's her time":

Even in Colman and Jung said in their acceptance speech (separately) how can we beat Glenn Close?

Since the entire Academy membership votes on the acting awards, Glenn must have pissed off a lot of people who work behind the scenes.

by Anonymousreply 77April 3, 2022 8:28 PM

It's a quantum leap from the mood and sentiment of Jessica Chastain's acceptance speech and that of Will Smith's.

R73 Along with Chastain consider Meryl in Iron Lady, Sally in Places in the Heart, Sandra Bullock The Blind Side, Hillary Swank Million Dollar Baby, Reese Witherspoon Walk the Line, Julia in Erin Brockovich, Jane Fonda Coming Home, Grace Kelly The Country Girl, Loretta Young The Farmer's Daughter, Jennifer Jones Song of Bernadette, Jodie Foster The Accused

by Anonymousreply 80April 4, 2022 5:25 AM

R80 ^ Don’t forget HELEN HUNT In As Good as it Gets. Even she said in her speech “why have I won this?”

by Anonymousreply 81April 4, 2022 9:52 AM

disagree about Foster in The Accused and Field in Places in the Heart.

Jodie rocked it cast way against type.

Field's speech clouds the fact that she gave a lovely carefully modulated performance in Places in the Heart.
