In the Utah Ski Trial, We Are All Gwynnocent

Why does the NYT let this ex-Gawker bitter hack write for them.

She is getting eviscerated on Twitter for this column, where she basically expresses her extreme jealousy of Paltrow.

A sample quote:

[quote] As a working person who pretty much never has half a day to ski and can’t taste wine properly even with all of my mental faculties intact, I have trouble mustering up much sympathy for either of them.

(People are pointing out that as a NYT columnist and "digital strategist" with a degree from Duke, she ain't exactly checking people out at Walmart and that both skiing and wine tasting are likely well within her budget, so WTF?)

[quote] When a wealthy, famous person ends up in front of court cameras, it’s a reminder that we have a two-tiered justice system that overwhelmingly favors the rich and disproportionately punishes the poor and people of color.

(Twitter: Some rich doctor sued Paltrow. They're both rich. How is that a "two-tiered justice system" and WTF does it have to do with Black people?)

[quote] Many wealthy defendants arrive in court in dress and demeanor designed to make them more relatable. Ms. Paltrow arrived in clothes that cost more than my monthly mortgage payments, carrying a Smythson notebook that retails for $325.

(Twitter: Paltrow is a well known actress, was she supposed to wear clothes from Target. Her outfits were not super flashy and other than Spiers, how many people even know what a Smythson notebook is, let alone have the ability to ID it from afar.)

Etc. and so on.

The Pitchbot should have a field day with it.

I think the Pitchbot is as pissed as the rest of us regular folk that she got exonerated. It's healthy for a society to fry a celeb here and there. A real missed opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 1April 2, 2023 12:30 PM

A missed opportunity to make her pay $300k to a scammer?

by Anonymousreply 3April 2, 2023 12:35 PM

Is there a name for pathological misogyny specifically toward white women? It's so common now, I think it needs a name.

by Anonymousreply 4April 2, 2023 1:02 PM

Spiers' most ridiculous gig is as a financial advice columnist at Slate, where much of her guidance suggests she has only a facile understanding of personal finance.

by Anonymousreply 5April 2, 2023 1:06 PM

omg she looked so tragic and sad.....money caint buy u joy i reckon.

by Anonymousreply 6April 2, 2023 1:13 PM

Elizabeth Spiers writes single.

by Anonymousreply 7April 2, 2023 1:17 PM

The Pitchbot is not a bitter 65 year old gay man, R1

by Anonymousreply 8April 2, 2023 1:19 PM

I am at the point where "former Gawker contributor" places the person just a rank above "chestburster egg" in my list of things I never wish to deal with.

I can't off-hand think of one who wasn't and doesn't remain a complete cunt.

At least Emily fucking Gould is keeping her mouth shut.

The accuser in the case was a scammer, whatever you think of Goop. And I don't think of her with any frequency, regardless of what her notebook cost.

Fuck Elizabeth Spiers, but, please, just with someone else's dick.

by Anonymousreply 9April 2, 2023 1:19 PM

Jia Tolentino is also a sour-ass bigoted bitch who is mediocre on a good day.

Gawker was kind of a cesspit. Is and also was.

by Anonymousreply 10April 2, 2023 1:23 PM

Woman hates other woman. Film at 11.

by Anonymousreply 11April 2, 2023 1:34 PM

That being said, the purpose of this editorial is to be idiotic to get people talking about it which is exactly what NYT wants. The author was merely doing her job to her employer’s expectations.

by Anonymousreply 12April 2, 2023 1:36 PM

“ It's healthy for a society to fry a celeb here and there. A real missed opportunity.”

Why is it ever healthy to fry anyone, even a celbrity, as a matter of course? Did she mean it was a missed opportunity for the jury to punish someone just because of their status of being a famous, wealth and arguably pretty blonde woman regardless of the facts of the case. How in the world was this a racial case when all the participants were well off whites skiing.

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2023 1:36 PM

If she said “I don’t like Gwyneth but nobody likes an ambulance chaser,” everyone would have agreed and moved on. She got the attention she wants. Maybe a bad example but it’s kind on analogous in a way to the Nashville school shooting. The killer got the attention she wanted.

by Anonymousreply 14April 2, 2023 1:39 PM

BS, R12. On that theory, the Fox broadcaster have no ownership of what they do as they are just pandering to an audience at their employer’s behest. She wrote it as her opinion and she owns the absurd content.

by Anonymousreply 15April 2, 2023 1:41 PM

The guy was Jewish? Maybe? That's the only possibility.

If we're going to fry celebs, let's fry Charlie Sheen or Mel Gibson or Steven Seagal or one of those twats.

Goop is at worst an annoyance, not a miscreant.

by Anonymousreply 16April 2, 2023 1:42 PM

It is somewhat astonishing how bitter all the ex-Gawker types still are, almost 20 years out.

You'll note too that Spiers mentions her "mortgage payment" which indicates she owns whatever home she lives in, something that clearly places her financially well above much of her generation, she works for the New York Times and Slate, meaning she's had success well beyond most every other journalist her age.

.. and she is still bitter because some Hollywood actor whose parents were already loaded wears an expensive suit to court and carries an overpriced notebook (which, I might add, she likely got for free because celebrities often get free things, particularly in the "goody bags" from various dinners and award shows.)

by Anonymousreply 17April 2, 2023 1:44 PM

[quote] The guy was Jewish? Maybe? That's the only possibility.

I don't know about the doctor, but Paltrow is Jewish.

Her brother was bar mitzvahed and everything.

I think it all comes down to hair envy.

R18, then I got nothing.

It's embarrassing to go back to Gawker writers and realize what a bunch of cliquey, arrogant, hateful, petty-minded fucks they were. Spy Magazine it was assuredly not.

by Anonymousreply 20April 2, 2023 1:53 PM

R16 His name is Sanderson, which is Swedish/Norwegian. Not likely.

by Anonymousreply 21April 2, 2023 2:00 PM

R20 Gawker was great because of the commenters, not the shitty braindead writers.

by Anonymousreply 22April 2, 2023 2:00 PM

R18 LMAO someone please take to Twitter and inform Ms. Spiers that she is an Anti-Semite. Tag some choice people/orgs if you don't mind 🤣

by Anonymousreply 23April 2, 2023 2:02 PM

R17, they thought the sun shone out of their assholes. They allowed themselves a degree of viciousness unseemly in a journalist and unsustainable in comedy. They were encouraged to come down like the proverbial ton of bricks on any subject that took their fancy. They wrote some hideous things about people who, however insufferable, were also complete non-entities, so this idea of targeting celebrities as a corrective is also gross hypocrisy on Spiers' part. And they perpetuated an incestuous office culture that turned into a tiresome soap opera (remember those rooftop bathing suit shots?). Now, with a few exceptions, they have no career path to speak of as they managed to alienate everyone in non-Gawker land. The Awl, anyone? Get Off My Internets? Julia Allison? Who gives a shit?

The only one at that viper's pit I would give the time of day was Liz Dimmitt, and she ran screaming into the night long, long ago.

by Anonymousreply 24April 2, 2023 2:06 PM

R22, true. I remember plenty of LOLs from Mr. Hippety, Flopsy and RollsRoyceRevenge. Although the latter was evidently a real bitch IRL.

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2023 2:07 PM

this hot take is a bit of a stretch. G earned my respect in this moment by representing herself with candor and truth. There were none of the usual courtroom playacting one often sees to make herself appear more relatable, common, or victim-y.

She dressed, spoke, and behaved exactly like the pampered white woman she is without apologies and without any of the usual narcissistic manipulations to justify or excuse her privileged position.

She politely weathered the prosecuting attorneys alternately fawning and resentful line of questioning and got in quite a few brililantly dry one liners.

It was a masterful demonstration of the power of self awareness and whatever larger social inequities the trial might highlight, none of them are really her fault. There was certainly no other way she could have handled the situation that would have been more broadly "socially just". She told the truth and she was 100% herself and thats all she needed to do.

whats really telling is how rare and refreshing that strategy is in the world

by Anonymousreply 26April 2, 2023 2:09 PM

R26 Off topic, but I love your name.

by Anonymousreply 27April 2, 2023 2:12 PM

How dare you, R10! I'll have you know I just won a National Magazine Award for my artfully crafted pieces for "The New Yorker". And it was totally deserved, as I am The Voice of the Female Millennial Generation.

by Anonymousreply 28April 2, 2023 2:13 PM

[quote] I don't know about the doctor, but Paltrow is Jewish.

Dads Jewish, mom isn’t. So not in the eyes of conservative or Orthodox Jews (real Jews in other words).

by Anonymousreply 29April 2, 2023 2:16 PM

R28 Every bit as much as Lens Dunham is.

by Anonymousreply 30April 2, 2023 2:20 PM

[quote] They wrote some hideous things about people who, however insufferable, were also complete non-entities,

This was what made Gawker so despicable: they picked on people who did not have the ability to defend themselves.

Pick on someone like Paltrow or Tom Cruise or Ralph Lauren or even Lindsay Graham and it doesn't matter: they've got a fan base that dwarfs Gawker's readership and they have PR teams that generate a massive amount of positive press.

But they went after people who were largely otherwise unknown, frequently under 30, where the Gawker hit was the most press they'd ever gotten.

[quote] I am The Voice of the Female Millennial Generation.

Or at least "A" Voice of the Female Millennial Generation.

by Anonymousreply 32April 2, 2023 2:25 PM

Paltrow's father descends from a rabbinical dynasty, which she used to tout in interviews. I think she's ripe for going Orthodox one day for the right billionaire. She's already used to a restrictive diet.

FFS, she went to Crossroads AND Spence, and her first cousin is Rebekah Neumann, WeWork Adam Neumann's wife.

And after some Hollywood romances, she's settled down with a Nice Jewish Boy, producer Brad Falchuk, who no doubt reminds her of her dad AND whose mother was National President of Hadassah.

She even has a house in Amagansett.

Does not get much more Jewish than that.

by Anonymousreply 34April 2, 2023 2:44 PM

Since Paltrow’s mother wasn’t Jewish, she is not Jewish. Unless her mother converted (which she may have)or GP herself did. She doesn’t seem to practice Judaism. Did her son have a Bat Mitvah for example? I don’t follow Goop.

by Anonymousreply 35April 2, 2023 2:52 PM

[quote]and WTF does it have to do with Black people?

Of course it has to be about Black people even when none of them are in sight. Check your whiteness!

by Anonymousreply 36April 2, 2023 2:53 PM

It is funny how the Gawker writers always made fun of the New York media and how out of touch they were. And where did they end up after Gawker went down in flames? At the NY Times, New Yorker or NY Mag... shocking.

by Anonymousreply 37April 2, 2023 3:05 PM

Elizabeth Spiers is a complete hack.

How she keeps getting writing assignments is beyond me.

by Anonymousreply 38April 2, 2023 3:07 PM

"At least Emily fucking Gould is keeping her mouth shut."

Not quite correct. A few months ago she begged her readers for money to fund her "expensive" divorce.

How hard is it to Google Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth?

R39. I can't fucking believe it.

Gessen is another ballless flash-in-the-pan wonder.
