old rich people having kids is a tradition in society. It allows the newer wives to attain permanent wealthy status (child support till the kids are 18 in the case of divorce) and provides the dad with a permanent middle aged life style until the elderly years/physical incapacity hit.
Is it perfect? No. It is selfish? I'd argue its far less selfish than the millions of teenagers who give birth to children every year and decide to raise them in poverty. They have no life skills as adults and no wealth to pass on to make their children's life easier. They are often supported by taxpayers and the schools those kids go to are often shitholes (that somehow cost taxpayers more than better functioning suburban schools).
