I Ain't Listening To This Generation

[Quote] Marlon Wayans is pushing back on political correctness and said that he will not change his comedy style to survive in this day and age and appease the current generation. In a recent interview, Wayans was asked if a movie like 2004’s White Chicks could “thrive” and not fall into “cancel culture.”

[Quote] “I think they’re needed. I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled. If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor,” he told Buzzfeed. “It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore. I ain’t listening to this damn generation.”

[Quote] White Chicks is a comedy directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans about two Black FBI agents, played by Wayans and his brother Shawn, who go undercover as women in whiteface to solve a kidnapping plot. The film was nominated for five Razzies including Worst Picture, Worst Actress, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Couple. Over time, some have considered White Chicks problematic, but Wayans assured in the interview that he would not stop making films that make people laugh.

[Quote] “I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-a** people, these scared executives,” he added. “Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself. I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”

His brother Shawn had a fantastic ass in those Scary Movie movies.

Did the insult comics like Don Rickles whine this much when their comedy styles fell out of favor? I know Carlin did, he had that huge meltdown toward the end of his career, but I feel like most comedians simply dealt with it as adults when their careers changed because the culture changed.

There is nothing more pathetic than some celebrity whining that the culture has changed over the last 20 years and it's the end of the world.

by Anonymousreply 6October 24, 2022 12:36 PM

One of the problems I see is so many have lost the ability to laugh at themselves. The younger generation takes offense at everything and takes themselves too seriously. They are just too exhausting and oh so earnest.

by Anonymousreply 7October 24, 2022 12:48 PM

Have ALL the Wayans come out???

by Anonymousreply 8October 24, 2022 12:59 PM

R6 it’s one this for comedy styles to fall out of favor, it’s another thing for comedy to fall out of favor, period. Not every comedian can be wrong on this.

Fwiw, I found late period George Carlin much funnier than what came before that.

by Anonymousreply 9October 24, 2022 12:59 PM

[quote]The younger generation takes offense at everything and takes themselves too seriously.

I don't know how anyone could regularly read the remarks of our beloved elderloungers and think it's only the younger generation that does this.

by Anonymousreply 10October 24, 2022 1:00 PM

[quote]it’s one this for comedy styles to fall out of favor, it’s another thing for comedy to fall out of favor, period.

It hasn't. Chappelle is practically a billionaire at this point, for telling the exact kinds of jokes you think have been "permanently cancelled."

[quote]Not every comedian can be wrong on this.

Please don't even waste our time with the "literally every comedian is saying this" crap. It's embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 11October 24, 2022 1:01 PM

He looks good. And his brother did look amazing in those movies. The gay stereotyping was a bit annoying but worth it to see him at his peak.

Their nephew, Damon Jr. - who is only about ten years younger than the two brothers in White Chicks - is also good-looking, as I recall.

by Anonymousreply 12October 24, 2022 1:08 PM

R9- Yes, so did I, much so. Do we truly have the right to free speech when comedians have to fear losing their career over offending certain groups of people? These people have been given too much power.

by Anonymousreply 13October 24, 2022 1:09 PM

I find it utterly ridiculous to put the blame on an ENTIRE generation when A FEW PEOPLE consider some comedy outdated, or "problematic", by today's standards.

Haters have always existed. Social media gives them a venue to be heard louder and clearer than ever. And the media is more than happy to exploit any controversy for clicks and ratings.

by Anonymousreply 14October 24, 2022 1:10 PM

R14- But what right do they have to decide what people can speak about and find humor in?

by Anonymousreply 15October 24, 2022 1:19 PM

Except nobody is trying to cancel him. And the people that complain about White Chicks are the same people having a meltdown over cancel culture.

God you old people love to whine about muh millenials.

by Anonymousreply 16October 24, 2022 1:19 PM

I have a feeling a no-holds-barred, vulgar, un PC comedian or comedy movie is going to break through in a major way these next few years. People are desperate for someone to start breaking the rules.

by Anonymousreply 18October 24, 2022 1:24 PM

R16- I did not accuse an entire generation, in fact I haven't mentioned millennials once.

by Anonymousreply 19October 24, 2022 1:27 PM

R16

Exactly!

Also, I think we have to be very careful because arguments like these do fuel bigots who want to have the freedom to say the most heinous shit against minorities.

by Anonymousreply 20October 24, 2022 1:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 21October 24, 2022 1:28 PM

[quote] [R14]- But what right do they have to decide what people can speak about and find humor in?

Huh? that has always existed. For example, older generations got offended by Elvis shaking his hips, declaring that music has gone to shit and is corrupting the youth.

by Anonymousreply 22October 24, 2022 1:29 PM

Those brothers just need to show their big black cocks.

by Anonymousreply 23October 24, 2022 1:30 PM

This is just cheap journalism. Every male comedian is asked this question for a reaction.

R16 is right. No one is trying to cancel him or “White Chick. Cancel culture has no real definition and until it’s defined it’s not real.

by Anonymousreply 24October 24, 2022 1:33 PM

I see the problem as people go to comedy shows these days to record them and try to find ways to be outraged or to start some Twitter scandal. What happened to not liking something and not participating in it. Instead, now it's let's destroy them.

by Anonymousreply 25October 24, 2022 1:37 PM

All the men in the Wayans family are hot.

by Anonymousreply 26October 24, 2022 1:38 PM

[quote]You mean, like what happened to the Dixie Chicks in the early aughts? Yeah, very "now".

What happened to the Dixie Chicks was awful, but this is different. The Dixie Chicks got caught up in a fresh wave of America is great and you're either with us or against us. It was even like that for a time here on DL. Right after 9/11, the country was in a scared and angry place. What's happening now is not us being in a scared place. It's people who were raised on anti-bullying campaigns not being able to know the difference between jokes and bullying.

[quote]Would he say the same if Black Chicks was made depicting Black women as fat, loud and obnoxious? I bet he wouldn't.

Uh, you are in a scared place where you feel threatened by social justice warriors, #metoo, Liberal Cancel Culture, controversial books, critical race theory, the word Gay, Trans, Liberals using early voting, etc.

by Anonymousreply 35October 24, 2022 1:55 PM

[quote]What's happening now is not us being in a scared place.

That is absolutely untrue on every conceivable level. Not only is r35 correct about the complaints obviously coming from a place of being scared of social change, but the recent massive upheavals in our culture -- Trump, Brexit, COVID, the economic downturn, gun violence, etc. -- has turned our culture into almost nothing BUT fear.

by Anonymousreply 36October 24, 2022 1:57 PM

if he had a time machine and came out to say this from twenty two years ago I would believed he was being earnest. . . but today, I'm inclined to think he's a band wagoning poseur... so much so that he, himself, wouldn't do white chicks today.

He's gone from Urkel to Stefan. (no, I'm not saying he's Jaleel White, you autist tards.)

He's too cool to for school and has a history of playing the game he claims to hate from this generation, too.

Not as bad as Mr. Chapelle. . who is by far worse on this kind of hypocrisy. But I suspect that's the larger influence of this. And Mr. Marlon is late, late, late to the party to be raising a fuss about all this now. Now, it pays to make these sorts of announcements.

Wake me when they're willing to do it it when it's unpopular and it has a higher cost.

by Anonymousreply 37October 24, 2022 2:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 39October 24, 2022 2:08 PM

R35- No, we are angry that a small percentage of whining assholes feel they are such special , delicate little hot house flowers that the world must conform to their ridiculous demands . Ignore biology, pretend a biological male can give birth, address them as they, them, binary, everything except their damn gender, and on and on because it is endless and fucking insane. Everything offends them, especially reality and biology. Women are being raped and assaulted by male predators forcing their selves into women's private spaces, ruining women's sporting competitions because these men put on women's clothes and demand to unfairly compete with women when they have a very unfair physical advantage.

by Anonymousreply 40October 24, 2022 2:08 PM

Eddie Murphy lost his bid for an Oscar for "Dreamgirls" because during the Oscar campaign, "Norbit" was released, a movie that featured a loud, overbearing, obnoxious, morbidly obese black woman, unapologetically portrayed by Murphy.

Murphy got cancelled by the PC crowd.

by Anonymousreply 41October 24, 2022 2:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 56October 24, 2022 5:34 PM

Why do they need to "grow up," R42? It's rather telling that when someone talks about the rape of women by straight men pretending to be "women" and female athletes having their sports destroyed by men pretending to be "women" that your response is to screech about being anti trans because the fetishes of straight men must always come first, right? Fucking prick. Fuck the trans loons too. They're fucking up the gay community as well. They're a bunch of straight White people. Everyone is fucking sick of their shit.

It's weird when I see Dataloungers complain about Reddit censorship, because every time I've given Reddit a chance and browsed the popular/hot topics, the threads are either a bunch of off-topic chatter, ESTs, or a bunch of hateful comments. The other day I went to r/nursing after the shooting at a hospital and found a thread about how much they hate dieticians. Another thread on there was a bunch of people saying they wouldn't even try to help evacuate patients during a fire because they don't get paid enough. Another thread in a different subreddit was about an expensive cocktail and everyone bitching either that the guy didn't tip enough or tipped too much.

I don't know what you guys are saying to get your posts deleted on Reddit, but it's like a more downtrodden, morose DL over there, and I can't imagine what would get deleted if "I wouldn't even save any babies if there was a fire in my hospital, just let 'em burn" doesn't get deleted.

Some of the mods on Reddit are crazy. I was banned from one subreddit because I challenged someone who kept saying she didn't understand why strangers she met were wary of her because she was a sex worker, which we all know is just a normal job. I said it was dangerous work. I had the effrontery to tell a stripper who was complaining about her job but acting like she had no other options that I was sorry she was having a hard time but she could make other choices. Other people have complained about the same moderator.

“Monty Python” icon John Cleese similarly said that cancel culture has a “disastrous effect” on comedy, while fellow British comedian Rowan Atkinson said it’s “comedy’s job to offend” audiences one way or another. Emmy winner Jerrod Carmichael likened cancel culture to the “boogeyman” and a “ghost villain” to give “boring people something interesting to talk about.”
