He was a great man. Passionate advocate for civil rights, social justice and humanitarian causes his entire career. Early in his career his open and vocal support of MLK and the civil rights movement cost him gigs, goodwill and money. His appeal as an entertainer was obvious. He was hugely successful and a 'first' in many areas of entertainment. His true legacy is that he was a determined freedom fighter who was steadfastly committed even when he had much to lose.
RIP, Mr. Belafonte

Belafonte and Joan Fontaine in Island in the Sun are the most perfect-looking onscreen couple I've ever seen. Those two sure looked purty against the equally purty Caribbean landscapes. But behind the scenes Harry was busy drilling the holes of the other Joan who worked on the film - Joan Collins. Here's what Dame Joan had to say about him:
[quote] "He was 31, six foot one, with melting brown eyes, a strong nose and close-cropped black hair. His sexual allure was accentuated by tight trousers and a shirt opened to reveal caramel- coloured skin. Although we had no scenes together, the all-British crew teased me relentlessly when they noticed how often Belafonte — who was married — threw me suggestive glances...He was mesmerising, and we soon began an affair, away from prying eyes, in my tiny apartment. But, after a few exciting liaisons, we knew we had to cool it. He went back to his wife and I moved on."

Harry was staying with Farley at his Coldwater Canyon home in 1952…then this shit went down…
“ Harry Belafonte, singer-actor, staying at the home of actor Farley Granger in 1952.
One night after dinner, I went walking up Coldwater Canyon. Within minutes, a police car pulled up. I was told, in no uncertain terms, to put my hands on the car and spread my legs.
"Why you out here walking, boy?" one of the cops demanded.
I said I was out in L.A. making a movie for MGM.
The other cop said, "So, you're a movie star?"
"Well, I wouldn't call it that."
"What kind of crazy-ass story is this nigger telling?" one of the cops said to the other. The cops ordered me into the car, took me down to the Beverly Hill police station, and charged me with illegal loitering. When I asked to make a phone call, the police just laughed. In due time, they told me, in due time. Two hours later, Farley became alarmed enough to call the police and report my disappearance.”.

Look. I agree with almost everything that's been said on this thread. He was a heroic person, a true freedom fighter, and beautiful to look at, brilliant mind, too. But he was not a "nice guy." He was full of himself, he was only warm and magical with his friends, and if you weren't "important" you weren't a friend. He collected important, influential people. And the Joan Collins episode was nothing. He was cheating on his 2nd wife so much, he left her while she was pregnant. He was a pig when it came to women. And he was not "liberated" in his views of women or Gays. Not a "man of the people." He loved to show up, and lecture and educate. And he was articulate. passionate, and absolutely authentic in his commitment to human rights. But the every day guy was no picnic. He expected women to be servile towards him. His attitude towards Gays has "evolved." I'm not trying to take him down. I am just saying we tend to put people on pedestals, and while he was a serious activist and a talented artist, he was not "accessible" to ordinary people. Ironic since both Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela were.

I knew one of his kids in passing. We weren't friends but friendly acquaintances. No love lost there. Odd combo of being proud of Dad, but not liking him much. Said he was cold and impersonal. Not close. Raised by Mother. I was also involved in the Anti Apartheid movement and had a chance to observe him as he made an appearance at a couple of events, and snubbed people or ignored them when they attempted to say hello. I'm talking about local dignitaries. His hosts. He was haughty, and cold. People, "little people" who had to work with him said he was a shit. He just walked passed me as if I was invisible and seemed out of sorts. When I asked one of his entourage if something was wrong, they laughed and said, "no that's just Harry. He's a bitch."

R75 nailed it. Belafonte was a person of his time - born in 1927.
I've heard many times over decades that he was a horror to work with, demanding, self-centered, rude, treating people below him like shit. Perhaps that's why he quit show business and went to UNICEF full time.
On how he thought about gays, in his autobiography he talks about prostate cancer and how he was reluctant to be examined in that area. I laughed!

No, that was Sidney Poitier. Diahann and Sidney had a LT relationship for at least ten years. But Sidney wouldn't divorce his first wife.
Harry Belafonte preferred WHITE women as conquests and as two of his three wives. Diahann Carroll did not qualify.

So what if he was conceited or whatever. He was the total package. Really brilliant mind, gorgeous man, talented artist, and committed activist. His public persona is enough. Not like I'd ever have a beer with him. R80 and R81 are right. I gotta say, though, I like Sidney Portier better. People always talked about what a sweet, kind man he was. Sidney, in his public appearances, always seemed embarrassed by all the deference and the attention. Harry expected the deference and attention. So that was the basic difference. But according to Hollywood lore they were close friends.

R89, are you aware that this is a gossip site? It's not a coronation for dead celebrities.
Lena Horne (a piece of work in her own right) once said Belafonte was "like my brother." Twenty years later she claimed she "hardly knew him." Must have been really hard to interview her based on her past interview responses.
Harry didn't go to her funeral in 2010.
| by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 26, 2023 5:30 PM |
R92 Lena was also a political activist in the 60's . To say, "Harry is like my brother" was a way to express solidarity, not necessarily expressing that he was close on a personal level. And there's absolutely a superficial aspect to relationships between celebrities who have intermittent contact from time to time because they are engaged in similar activities. To say later that she "hardly knew him" was perhaps the most honest assessment of their relationship. people sometimes assume all famous people know one another in Hollywood or in the music business, and there is especially that assumption about Black entertainers.
| by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 26, 2023 5:57 PM |
Please, R93, she did mean it as they were close personal friends. They made an album together in the 50s, did a show in Las Vegas in 1969-70, a TV special together in 1970, they even lived in the same building at 300 West End Ave - he sold her a co-op.
They had a love-hate relationship, on and off, and when it was off it was OFF. Btw, Lena, like most of her black peers was a civil rights "activist," but nothing like Belafonte was.

R95, you have obviously done your research. I didn't know about the history of their relationship. Thank you. I'd love to know what precipitated their falling out. Wow.
But I want to clarify one thing. Back in the 70's I often heard Activists call one another "brother" even when they had never met. They used the expression to show spiritual/political solidarity. So I did have context for that.
| by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 26, 2023 9:21 PM |
I figured, R98. Because of their contributions to the civil rights movement, the press left both of them alone for the most part.
Everything I've read assumes the feud began from clashing of their huge egos. A star like Streisand might get lost swooning over a beauty like Harry and forget any slight, Lena wouldn't have had any of that. Which made me think of something. Harry may have known a bit too much about Lena. He stayed with her and her 2nd husband once; knew they didn't sleep in the same bedroom, may have known or assumed a few personal things about Lena. She could have not trusted him.
| by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 26, 2023 10:19 PM |

Another Lena thing. I heard on The View and on Today this morning that Harry Belafonte bought a NYC bldg that wouldn't rent to him, then "gave" the penthouse to Lena Horne. In reality, Belafonte SOLD the penthouse apt to Lena. Even though he was a Saint, he wasn't foolish enough to give away a ten-twelve room apartment to anyone.
In the early 1960s, when their friendship was on the outs, Lena invented a wild story of how she found the apartment, not mentioning Belafonte's name! It's in her 1965 autobiography.

R135, yes he did. Absolutely.

I can’t stand Jesse anymore. He did his wife dirty. And in the name of diversity and creating opportunities for people of color, he lined his own pockets and those of his inner circle. A blatant opportunist and grifter.

R137, One of Jesse’s affairs was with Roberta Flack.

R137 Plus he threatened to castrate Obama. Coon cunt.

R138, I thought Roberta Flack was a lesbian. The song she recorded called "Jesse" was written by Janis Ian who most definitely did not have an affair with Jesse Jackson. It was probably based on a woman named Jesse.

R137, His son, Jesse Jackson, Jr., lost his House seat, was convicted on mail fraud,/wire fraud charges and misuse of campaign funds.
Both he and his wife served prison time.

I looked up the song info for "Jesse"
"I was 14 or 15 when I started that song," Janis Ian told Songfacts. "Originally Jesse was going to be about a Vietnam War vet coming home. But then that was limiting."
While the song could apply to a Vietnam veteran, Ian wrote it to have a more universal meaning, as the song could relate to anyone wondering when - or if - a loved one will return home. This is typical of her songwriting, as she likes to tell stories that listeners can extrapolate with personal experience

Jesse Jackson had a long term affair and close friendship with Aretha Franklin. They'd pray then fuck.

R143 😂 😆 😝. I’m sorry but even if that isn’t true that was so unexpected and funny. They’d pray then fuck. Classic.

And his mistress flaunted their child together. Poor Jacqueline Sr. She is a classy lady; I met her when I was a boy at a march in DC for the murdered children in Atlanta.

R131, that was two out of twenty.

R143 here. Y'all think I was joking, but that is literally what they'd do. And the phrase was not mine. It literally came from a member of her family and I will not say who. They're no longer with us. LOL! He counseled her for years. Re was troubled. She suffered from depression and maybe was on the bi polar spectrum. Who knows. But I did love her and she threw some hellacious parties, gurl! People be passed out on the flo'. But by then she had done her walk through greeted people and left.

Roberta Flack? That’s low. How phony is she?
| by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 28, 2023 1:55 AM |
R147 😂 😆. I know it’s you.
| by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 28, 2023 4:12 AM |
I'm surprised Jesse Jackson is still alive. He has major health issues.
| by Anonymous | reply 150 | April 28, 2023 3:02 PM |
I can't see Jesse Jackson going near tubby neurotic Aretha EVER. She's even older than he is.
| by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 28, 2023 4:21 PM |
R151 Aretha Franklin was not tubby in the 60s and 70s.
| by Anonymous | reply 152 | April 28, 2023 4:31 PM |
Three years here and there do not make a person not tubby, R152.
| by Anonymous | reply 153 | April 28, 2023 5:10 PM |
Jesse was born in 1940; Aretha in 1942, so, no, she wasn’t older than him.

He left his first wife, who was so lovely and accomplished, from a good family. For some horsey faced white woman. The more I find out about him, the more I’m disappointed…

Then, R155, after 50 years of marriage and two children with horsey face second wife, Harry dumps her to marry half his age blond white woman. She is always listed as a photographer, which means she knows how to point and shoot.

[quote] Harry was a womanizer. Wonder what happened when he hit on DL fave Lena Horne.
She really is, isn't she? Datalounge LOVES Lena Horne! It's wonderful.

That’s why we should admire our heroes from a distance…
| by Anonymous | reply 158 | May 7, 2023 8:37 PM |
Harry was never a "hero" to me. He was fine. Gorgeous man. But I never considered him a hero. MLK, Jr. and Mandela are heros.

R157 = David Ehrenstein checking in. He especially loves the "Lena + Harry" image in his mind.
| by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 7, 2023 11:52 PM |
Harry liked white meat and Lena liked the ladies.
