I’m a DJ at a popular gay club on the east coast. We put signs on the DJ booth that say “NO REQUESTS”. We never had to do that before he obnoxious bachelorette party/straight girl crowds started claiming the space as their own , shrieking at the top of their lungs and acting like drunk idiots. WGCI is targeted towards black teenagers and young adults in the city and inner suburbs. The wording and name-dropping of these radio stations does racialize it immediately. When I lived in Chicago there were two black stations. They played the best music. One didn’t of them would not play rap though. Just old school rnb and funk

I remember that was an article that talked about how gay clubs in LA were segregated by race up until the late 80s. Any eldergay from LA if you have any information, I also read that they played black music in those clubs just didnt allow black people in.
I guess in this case they let black people in but wont allow black people music, so interesting how things have reversed.

A few years ago residents to the southeast of Boystown fought a permit variance for a residential area church putting in a “youth center” (again another tranny hangout until it closes, then out to prowl the streets). Instead of actually addressing issues of security and accountability, their hateful rhetoric (ACTUALLY hateful) leaked causing a huge shitshow because they couldn’t hide behind their delicate public PR. Basically all residents with concerns were “hostile and verbally violent. Many comments and viewpoints will be expressed—many of which are racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, ableist, and ageist.”
Just like not wanting rap is RACIST. Good lord. Anything to avoid the actual elephant in the room.

There are some fun rap songs but this isn't what we're talking about. Young people gravitate to it because it's a. Simple and something they think they can do. Most of Chicago isn't "violent" and even this is a small area in the gayborhood. But R164 is right. And I don't want to be racist about it. The problem is that the center pulls a lot of young people from impoverished neighborhoods and puts them in Boystown, where there is little to no support for them. It's a long ride to/from their homes, and the only thing they knew for survival in the south side was hooking, so it turns out to be a recipe for disaster.
There should be a second LGBT center in the South Side, but - and here's the racist part - money and resources generally go to the north side.
