They're deliciously CREEPY.

Those things terrified me as a kid. It's the primary reason I never enjoyed The Wizard of Oz.

Most kids I knew found the flying monkeys terrifying, including me.

It's interesting that they're in the original book, and there's a chapter-long backstory about how the Wicked Witch is able to command them (against their wishes).

I can't decide which are creepier- The Wizard Of Oz monkeys or the Apes in Planet Of The Apes (1968)

All the technological know-how we have today to create social effects, but they still don't top the magic of 1939's "The Wizard of Oz"

Scared the bejesus out of me

I love them. We have flying monkeys here and I swear to god, if I could get to them. and carry them I would absolutely, without guilt, steal them.

OP - Is that photo from a costume test? I wasn’t scared of the monkeys, but If the director had okayed those giant bat wings, I would have run screaming out of the theater.

Wasn’t that the original concept of them? Those were screen tests and costume tests. They went with a different look.

R9- Yes, that was a costume test for the movie. So much care and attention was put into even the most minor characters in the movie. It's the way they built homes in those days or cars- Craftsmanship.

They must've been weak minded.

Were the flying monkeys a minor character though? They were probably one of the biggest talking points of that movie, and they knew they would be because the idea of them alone is scary, yet alone in 1939.

They would be rescue monkeys.

R13- I'm talking about any one of the flying monkeys or the munchkins in the Wizard Of Oz.

So many kids' fairy tales have monsters. Most Kids like scary things. Look at Grimms Fairy Tales. I loved those fairy tales.

My flying monkeys will try to kill you with guns and rhetoric.

Flying monkeys are incredibly sweet and affectionate. I hate how they’re unfairly stereotyped as aggressive or deadly. I recently adopted one, and she’s a total love bug! They’re also amazing with children. That’s why they are known as “the winged nannies.”

Did some of the Munchkin actors also play the flying monkeys?

My fave scene, R21! Even as a child, I knew it was all made up and loved the monkeys. Look at the amazing combination of practical effects; wires, puppets, little people and multiple shots in just a few seconds.
And my favorite line, "That's you all over!"

It looks like the effects crew used windshield wiper motors in the wings. I love the flapping wings!
