Every Couple In Commercials Now Are Bi-Racial.

Not that there's anything wrong with it....

Why do you care?

I just saw 3 or 4 commercials with white couples.

You’re just choosing to pick out the few with mixed couples.

by Anonymousreply 1February 16, 2019 6:50 PM

EWWW. Those nappy haired kids are ratch-looking.

What bugs me is that they most likely made a casting call specifically for a biracial couple.

by Anonymousreply 2February 16, 2019 6:56 PM

^ Says someone who most likely looks a bit like Captain Caveman

by Anonymousreply 3February 16, 2019 6:59 PM

The US ads are finally catching up to the U.K...which have featured mixed race couples and families in ads and tv shows for at least 2 decades or more. It was the first thing I noticed while watching tv when I lived in England over 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 4February 16, 2019 7:09 PM

R4 the UK has the highest rate of interracial marriages in all the world. So please, stop.

by Anonymousreply 5February 16, 2019 7:12 PM

I find it weird that they should be the same race. That's no longer the default in places like LA.

by Anonymousreply 6February 16, 2019 7:21 PM

This is great, OP. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 7February 16, 2019 7:21 PM

Was it the new Lowes commercial which drove you to this, OP? Or was that Home Depot? I made the same observation when I saw the commercial a few hours ago.

by Anonymousreply 8February 16, 2019 7:25 PM

So all the commercials I’m seeing with two white People don’t exist? Hmmmmm

by Anonymousreply 9February 16, 2019 7:26 PM

Mixed race couples are typical in Houston. I'm glad that tv is finally catching up with reality, even if it shocks our elders into a premature death.

by Anonymousreply 10February 16, 2019 7:31 PM

Typical in all major cities R10. Go to NYC, LA, Houston, Chicago, Miami, you’ll see interracial couples.

London all the time.

by Anonymousreply 11February 16, 2019 7:33 PM

^ It's the commercials with the black male/white female dynamic which does them in.

by Anonymousreply 12February 16, 2019 7:33 PM

The thing is it's always WM/BW, when statistically that's the lowest % of interracial marriages.

by Anonymousreply 13February 16, 2019 7:34 PM

I live in NYC and honestly I don't see it all that much TBH.

by Anonymousreply 14February 16, 2019 7:37 PM

R5, has their panties in bunch...take chill pill. Jeez!

by Anonymousreply 15February 16, 2019 7:39 PM

R14 you must live around all the yuppies and transplants.

I live around a lot of NATIVES.

by Anonymousreply 16February 16, 2019 7:41 PM

I love the commercial with the older white couple with their obviously biracial grandchildren and it's never explained. Doesn't have to be.

by Anonymousreply 17February 16, 2019 7:59 PM

It's gone further than that.

I'm seeing commercials that feature a dog and a cat, not two dogs, not two cats, but a dog and a cat!

by Anonymousreply 18February 16, 2019 8:01 PM

R16, nope. I live amongst natives. I don't see it with transplants or natives, at least B/W pairings. I'm sure there are couples, it's just not prevalent from what I've personally seen in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 19February 16, 2019 8:06 PM

I once saw a golden retriever mount a labrador and it was never explaned. Doesn't have to be.

by Anonymousreply 20February 16, 2019 8:06 PM

This is where it started. The Cheerios commercial that got everyone up in arms. Blasphemy!

by Anonymousreply 21February 16, 2019 8:06 PM

Who cares?! Interracial couples exist. Fuck off haters.

by Anonymousreply 22February 16, 2019 8:14 PM

OP, Tide is a Proctor and Gamble product. P&G also owns Gillette which brought us that fabulously woke "all males are toxic, especially white males" razor commercial a couple of months ago. I'm so glad I don't watch TV.

by Anonymousreply 23February 16, 2019 8:14 PM

Are Proctor and Gamble a bi-racial couple?

That could explain the commercials...

by Anonymousreply 24February 16, 2019 8:20 PM

But when will every couple in commercials be gay?

by Anonymousreply 25February 16, 2019 8:24 PM

Again, still tons of commercials with white couples.

There could be 50 commercials with white couples but you all will just focus on the 5 with interracial and bitch.

by Anonymousreply 26February 16, 2019 8:25 PM

So r23 we can understand having a problem with the Gillette commercial but your salty about the interracial couples?

by Anonymousreply 27February 16, 2019 8:26 PM

I think the problem is that these are national ads. People outside of coastal cities think interracial couples are rare.

by Anonymousreply 28February 16, 2019 8:30 PM

“Well I never in all my life!”

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2019 8:39 PM

This is a very sensitive subject for some people, as we have learned.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2019 8:39 PM

R28 well they can see they exist!

by Anonymousreply 31February 16, 2019 8:40 PM

If you live in homogeneous communities then it’s not the norm. But most large cities with different ethnic makeups have mixed race couples and families. Why is this ad even being discussed? Who cares this much about mixed raced families?

by Anonymousreply 32February 16, 2019 8:46 PM

The casting for commercials is not done by selecting random people and it is not done to reflect reality, so we can put those possibilities aside. The portrayal of mixed race couples is noticeably increasing and advertisers are doing it purposely. It’s unlikely that it’s marketing to that specific segment. It may be just because advertising companies rarely come up with anything new, and when one does it gets copied by everyone else. So it’s either a fad, or it could be that it saves money by not having to create multiple ads with variou single race families as has been the practice.

by Anonymousreply 33February 16, 2019 8:49 PM

“They are shoving miscegenation down our throats! I don’t like that lifestyle!”

by Anonymousreply 34February 16, 2019 8:52 PM

They aren’t advertising anything but their product! I don’t see these commercials and think “they’re advertising interracial”. I don’t even notice!!!

by Anonymousreply 35February 16, 2019 8:53 PM

Lipstick Alley has a huge thread on this topic.

by Anonymousreply 36February 16, 2019 8:54 PM

My kid is an actor in NYC and at most callbacks for commercials, there is "one of each" - African American, latinx, Asian, biracial, blonde/redhead/"white", and ethnically ambiguous. 9 times out of 10, the ethnically ambiguous kid books it. 2nd place would be the biracial kid.

by Anonymousreply 37February 16, 2019 8:56 PM

Sure Jan R37

Over 95% or TV is filled with white faces. But that’s not enough? You’re complaining about 15 second ads?!

by Anonymousreply 38February 16, 2019 9:04 PM

OP, so vulgar to point out something like that.

by Anonymousreply 39February 16, 2019 9:07 PM

R37

Is this the racially ambiguous kid who gets all the bookings?

He is everywhere on TV.

by Anonymousreply 40February 16, 2019 9:11 PM

Interracial couples have been the norm in LA since at least the early 90s.

by Anonymousreply 41February 16, 2019 9:14 PM

I'm not sure if R37 is being racist R38. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that she's not. People have joked for years about the multi-ethnic gangs on TV shows. And if you look at commercials, especially commercials aimed at women, those are the most diverse friend groups I've ever seen.

But I'm happy for it because it gives racial and ethnic minorities additional opportunities to earn a living at acting.

As for the white husband/non-white wife commercial pairings, I think that is the type of pairing that tests well with audiences.

by Anonymousreply 42February 16, 2019 9:14 PM

I do see interracial couples in SoCal, but I wouldn't say that they are the norm. Some pairings seem to be more common than others, though. I would say that interracial/interethnic dating/marriage does seem to be at least close to the norm with gays and lesbians in SoCal but I wouldn't necessarily say it's the norm among straight people.

by Anonymousreply 43February 16, 2019 9:25 PM

R38 I love when people on this board assume a poster must be lying when they say something you disagree with

by Anonymousreply 44February 16, 2019 9:28 PM

I think what OP is trying to say is that that the commercials are disproportionate to reality. We are not talking about hispanic/white or Asian/white etc.. the commercials are very specific; mostly black women/white men. In real life that is not a common or "norm" pairing, not even in big cities. The majority of people date and marry within their own races/ethnicities with the possible exception of Asian women.

by Anonymousreply 45February 16, 2019 9:29 PM

I know white men with black women...

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2019 9:33 PM

I live in the U.K. We’ve always had diversity in our tv shows since the 80s at least, and we never acknowledged it because it just was part of our shows and adverts. Now America is finally catching up with the rest of the western world, I won’t lie I’m sick of talking about this shit!!! We seem to be getting lumped in with all your shit recently and it’s creating huge divisions over here that just didn’t really exist over here before. I love you merica, but if we could have a brexit from you guys until you’ve sorted yourselves out, I would

by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2019 9:39 PM

I have noticed this as well. I like it. Now could we finally have some same-sex representation in commercials?

by Anonymousreply 48February 16, 2019 9:39 PM

I didn't think OP was complaining. In light of the national reaction to the Cheerios commercial, it's quite amazing that there are as many commercials featuring mixed race couples as there are now. When they have those commercials with a compilation of people/families/couples, they touch on all the possibilities, including gay couples.

There is a renovated condo building In DC with multi-million dollar units. When I checked out the site, I played their video advertisement. Guess who the couple is in the video? Middle-aged white man with middle aged black woman.

by Anonymousreply 49February 16, 2019 9:39 PM

R46, no one is saying WM/BW couples don't exist, but is not typical or the norm. AW/WM are more common, but you rarely, if ever, see any commercials with this pairing. Btw, statistically, white men marry outside their race the least.

by Anonymousreply 50February 16, 2019 9:41 PM

We do have same-sex couples in commercials. There’s a gay couple in a drug commercial (something about migraines) that runs on MSNBC all the time. And I’ve seen others elsewhere. It’s encouraging.

by Anonymousreply 51February 16, 2019 9:42 PM

What is “every” couple? Cause I’m seeing tons of commercials and shows with white couples. Most are white People.

So what’s “every”?

by Anonymousreply 52February 16, 2019 9:48 PM

R47 How fucking old are you? Classic Dr Who wasn't integrated at all! Star Trek in the 1960s was. African Americans like Jim Brown were in films back then not to mention Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. How many black stars were in any British productions in the 1960s with the exception of Department S?

by Anonymousreply 53February 16, 2019 9:48 PM

“I don’t care what color you are, I don’t even notice race!... until I see too many nonwhite people, because, you know, what’s up with that?”

by Anonymousreply 54February 16, 2019 9:53 PM

R53 we have more programs than Dr Who y’know. Google Grange Hill and east Enders....and Grange Hill was a kids show!!! Gay and Race related stories. I’m not saying we’re mega progressive, but definitely ahead of America

by Anonymousreply 55February 16, 2019 9:53 PM

R39 and R41 are right.

R43 is mistaken, sheltered, and/or somewhat new to LA.

by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2019 9:54 PM

No one should be upset about the media pushing its agenda to get all races to mix more, because the sooner we’re all the same shade of brown, the sooner we can get on doing what the human race was supposed to do...advance!

by Anonymousreply 57February 16, 2019 9:57 PM

R55 Did you have an i Spy in Britain all the way back in the Sixties? NO! Was their a british version of The Jeffersons in the 1970s? No! Young and The Restless the Number One US soap has many African Americans on that show traditionally and a big black audience. The other soaps have had black people on from decades ago.

Do your research and stop making a fool of yourself. I know your shows you don't know ours.

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2019 9:59 PM

R57 GROW UP. WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOME OF YOU?!

Aren’t you gay?!

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2019 10:00 PM

Blacks make up just 13% of the population in the U.S. but, if you went by television commercials, you'd think they made up closer to 50%. On the other hand, I can't remember the last time I saw an Hispanic person in a commercial.

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2019 10:00 PM

[quote]I live in the U.K. We’ve always had diversity in our tv shows since the 80s at least, and we never acknowledged it because it just was part of our shows and adverts. Now America is finally catching up with the rest of the western world....

Why is this thread not killed yet. FFing it. Over this race shit in the GAY community of all places

by Anonymousreply 62February 16, 2019 10:02 PM

It is a marketing strategy. Done for corporate profits.

by Anonymousreply 63February 16, 2019 10:05 PM

R62 By "troll" you of course mean someone who brings up statistical facts. Would you be happier if I lied and said blacks make up 95% of the population in the U.S.? Would that prevent you from going on a spittle-spewing F&F rampage?

by Anonymousreply 64February 16, 2019 10:06 PM

Hate to break it to you but interracial couples do make up 12% of the country now. While not the majority, that’s millions of couples.

Get over it.

by Anonymousreply 65February 16, 2019 10:06 PM

R64 that’s not fact. Trust me.

by Anonymousreply 66February 16, 2019 10:07 PM

R66 You're right. I actually over-represented them.

R11 In my admittedly anecdotal experience, it depends on the city. I have seen a fair amount of interracial couples, both gay and straight, in Houston, LA and San Francisco. Almost zero in Washington DC and Boston , which appear very segregated to my eyes. Obviously though this is just my personal observations, I don't have any data. It would be interesting to see statistical differences.

by Anonymousreply 69February 16, 2019 10:13 PM

There's nothing wrong with it nor anything shocking about it.

However, it's also not as common as the frequency with which it is depicted on tv and movies would seem indicate.

Only 15.1% of new marriages, an all-time high figure, were multi-racial, compared to 8.4% of all married couples.

by Anonymousreply 70February 16, 2019 10:13 PM

Well, r56, just post a link showing that interracial couples are the standard (and not a minority or outside the norm) in LA. That should settle it. For the record, I don't have a problem with interracial couples or these sorts of commercials, but I can't even remember the last time I've even seen a WM/BW couple in real life, so I understand why people would be curious about the reasoning behind the increase in commercials featuring this particular pairing when other pairings are more common.

by Anonymousreply 71February 16, 2019 10:14 PM

R65, but only 3% of that is WM/BW, and that's the majority of the mix races couples featured in these commercials. Why not feature a hispanic and white or Hispanic and black? I honestly think black couples get the short end of the stick. I hardly see any commercials with black couples.

by Anonymousreply 72February 16, 2019 10:16 PM

Commercials exist to do one thing: sell the product. As mentioned above, casting people don't randomly choose racially-different actors to play a couple in an ad; it's all intentional.

The sponsors behind a product don't give two shits about reflecting what is actually happening in society. They most likely just want to seem "woke" which will help sell their product to Millennials (who are the new target demographic).

by Anonymousreply 86February 16, 2019 10:41 PM

R43 says interracial couples aren't the norm in LA. Now he wants proof that they're the majority.

Moron, something can be the norm if it's the plurality of something. Interracial couples are the plurality in LA. Not Orange County — LA.

by Anonymousreply 87February 16, 2019 10:41 PM

Lmaoooooooo how am I the one shit stirring.

How is 5 commercials out of 50 “everyone”?! Explain this logic.

THE MAJORITY OF LA ISNT EVEN WHITE. THEYRE NUMBER 3 there.

by Anonymousreply 89February 16, 2019 10:43 PM

I want to know how it's possible that there are only 12% of the population that are black and around the same for hispanics, when I've been all over this country and with the exception of a few places, they are everywhere. Especially black people, I see them everywhere. I find those statistics very hard to believe.

by Anonymousreply 90February 16, 2019 10:49 PM

Does anyone else find the East Coast to be more segregated than the west coast?

by Anonymousreply 93February 16, 2019 11:13 PM

R87, what I want you to do is post a link proving that the standard or typical (aka 'the norm') couple in LA is an interracial one. Clearly you can't do that, which is why you've become belligerent (and also clearly in a manic state). You said that I'm mistaken, sheltered and what not, so prove it. Perhaps you could say that interracial couples aren't rare in LA, but they aren't the norm. Same-race couples are the norm, even in LA.

by Anonymousreply 94February 16, 2019 11:13 PM

R93, Born and raised NYC and I always say things are more segregated here than West Coast.

You see people of different races and backgrounds in the same buildings but you hardly see them interact.

A white persona living 1000 feet from a black person doesn’t make it more diverse.

by Anonymousreply 95February 16, 2019 11:15 PM

R95 Yes I have seen the same thing in Washington DC and Boston. I have long believed the East Coast to be a bit more segregated but I was curious if anyone else noticed this.

by Anonymousreply 96February 16, 2019 11:21 PM

R58 no but in fairness, Black people only started to emigrate to the U.K. in the 1960. They were offered citizenship in return for filling huge holes of employment in industry. This was predominantly in hospitals and in factories. No one was getting citizenship offered to attend drama school! It was only when the children of immigrants started to grow up and filter through universities that there ever really became a cohort of “black actors”, and this was around the early 70s. Hope your enjoying the history lesson here.

by Anonymousreply 97February 16, 2019 11:30 PM

R96 I’m always called crazy for saying that but it’s true.

I will never forget the night I was walking late on a Friday Night and there were 2 bars packed, directly next to each other. The doors were open (it was summer) and it’s all glass so you can see in. One was legit all white People. Me and my friend were looking in and all we saw were white people and a few Asians, then in the next you see tons of black people and some Hispanic people with the black friends. Me and my friend looked at each other in disbelief.

This was 2016. We were like “things are still so segregated”. It’s not like they were in different areas, they were right next to each other on the same block. Smh.
