Dorothy McGuire is Dead to Me

An Academy award nominated actress for her role in Gentleman's Agreement. She also played the mother in Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson. She died on September 13, 2001, because of that timing she was robbed of a proper memorial in the press. We honor her now.

So, because of the pandemic you didn't feel safe starting a thread back then?

Damn, my theory of backed-up DL threads that haven't posted since the early 2000s is becoming more realistic. Damn, Mureal.

We've already had threads on how great she was and the brilliant Oscars didn't even have her In Memoriam. This has been discussed. I know because I've followed any mention of her on DL. She gave one of the greatest performances on stage that I've seen in Night of the Iguana at The Circle In the Square. She'll tear your heart out in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

There was furore when she -- as mentioned, an Oscar-nominated actress -- was not included in the "In Memoriam" section of the following year's Oscars. Oh, but Aaliyah was honored due to her two screen roles.

I bet she was a helluva Maxine!

I always got her mixed up with Dorothy Malone

Was she a McGuire Ssister?

Did wiki update her death date on the day of her death? Yes—she got her proper due

Enjoyed her very much in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and A Summer Place

Dorothy McGuire was terrific in so many movies - plus she made a great mom in Parrish, Summer Place, Swiss Family Robinson. …. Didn’t she play Clifton Webb’s secretary and go wading into the Trevi fountain for him in “Three Coins in the Fountain?”

The Maxine was the famous Sylvia who dumped a plate of spaghetti on the head of John Simon when NY was filled with interesting people.

T 17 - I meant Susan Slade!! She played Connie Stevens mom and Lloyd Nolan was the dad. Connie had a baby out of wedlock and very middle aged Lloyd and Dorothy pretended that they were the parents …. Parrish was Claudette Colbert on the Tobacco farm. My nimble brain is slipping - I confused my Connie Stevens movies!!

She gave birth to one of the best baseball players ever.

Was she dining in Windows on the World?

I liked her in "The Enchanted Cottage," all that breathless innocence was quite charming. Besides, it had the very underrated Mildred Natwick in it(she and Thelma Ritter are in that same club)

Although Deborah Kerr was fine in "Tea and Sympathy," I'll just bet Dorothy would have done a great job with it too.

Does anyone see the resemblance between Dorothy and singer/actress Julie London?

Op, why did you wait so long for this tribute?

R23 - Yes! I hadn’t thought of it before - but yes - Dorothy and Julie London look quite a bit like each other!
