Do people get a notification if you unfollow them on Instagram?

I follow someone I know causally who is a nice person but posts about 90 boring selfies a week. It's clogging up the feed but I don't want to hurt their feelings or them to think I don't like them. I mostly follow nature, architecture and cooking pages anyway. Lately it's just been a non-stop bombardment of their face.

People take social media so seriously and the type of person who does post selfies a lot would likely be offended by unfollowings. But honestly a truly nice person shouldn't expect everyone to follow their social media. I hate the unnecessary drama social media adds to our lives.

The answer is maybe. There are third-party apps and services that can and will notify people of this kind of thing. Sad.

You could just mute them, so you'd still be "following" them but they won't show up on your feed.

The issue with social media is it feels like a family reunion where you see people you never talk to and it's awkward trying to confront them and engage. Social media feels like this but everyday. People who really aren't your friends demand you to follow and like their posts and create this illusion of companionship and take offense if you don't like their posts or unfollow them. It's completely ridiculous.

Just unfollow them, OP. If they’re annoying, then who cares if your callous prodding at his fragile ego is the final straw that pushes him to suicide?

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2022 2:15 AM

Yes, they do OP...then they send them your personal information so they can stalk you for eternity.

R5: are you sure? I know Twitter has the ‘mute’ option but I don’t think it’s available on Instagram

Yes, I'm sure. Go to your friend's profile, click on "Following," click "Mute," then you can choose to mute their posts or stories or both.

Did you try troubleshooting with an IG rep?

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2022 2:38 AM

Seems better not to "Follow" anyone in the first place.

Thanks OP, for making this 50 year old feel young!
