My husband and I have noticed two cheap things about DOOL in recent months:
1. All the "events" (surprise parties, weddings, celebrations, etc.) have about 8 people in attendance...maybe 10.
2. There are no more kids on the show (we're not complaining, just observing). The babies are rubber, with recorded cries and gurgles. The toddlers are always being babysat by someone, with their grandparents, with their other parent, at camp, etc. Because of child labor regulations, they have to cast twins to play a single child, which apparently gets expensive.

The show has said goodbye to an amazing amount of actress in the past couple of years.
Not in any order = Sheila, Valerie, Tamara, Jan. Sami, Carrie, Chloe, Bonnie, Mimi, Adrienne, Jordan, Haley. Laura (the past four all killed off), Hope, NuCiera (twice), Jennifer, NuJennifer, Vivian, NuVivian, Anna, Abby, NuAbby (again), Claire 1, Ari (sent packing with WilSon). Gabi, NuKristin (jailed), Maggie & now Sarah.
Some were only gone for a few months (like Gabi) but the voids were still there.

I am a college educated man. I live in a blue state, in an urban area. I'm gay, do alright, and I am a soap fan. Have been all my life and it's pays homage to my grandma who got me started on these things.
People, like me, who watch soaps are few and far between. However, let's just break it down and be honest, and this is no shade to anyone, but most soap watchers are from red, conservative states, and despite what you see on soap twitter most of them are straight women with high school diplomas and very conservative values.
I am not looking down on anybody, but that is the reality of who watches soaps. When the online soap community gets upset about the lack of gay representation, the portrayal of women, and even how certain storylines and characters just repeat over and over again or the basic conservative values of these shows, it's like they have a block towards accepting who the real audience is.
There is an argument that if these shows modernized and told, bolder more proactive stories they would grow their audience. But I also understand these networks people, who see hemorrhaging numbers for network TV, don't want to upset the apple cart and just cater to the audience they have.
I mostly follow soaps on here and soap twitter. I haven't been to one of those message boards in years. I went to one of Days Facebook pages a couple of weeks ago and it's like a goddamned MAGA rally. And even while soap twitter is a little better than Soap Facebook, even they are delusional about what this genre is and who is watching it.

I wanna support by gay brethren but I think Ron needs help or needs to move on. He caved in to pressure from the trumptard viewers and did not put the gay couple, boring as they may be, as one of the front and center stories (even a single but mischievous Leo could've worked for me) and keeps recycling storylines from back when he was at OLTL (Abby's mental health). I like his acknowledgment of the show's history and adding some campiness, but there needs to be a balance.
Also DAYS doesn't seem to be able to develop intriguing long term storylines like GH expertly does (Y&R use to but is just plain moribund now). It constantly feels like there's a race against the clock to present something, develop it then resolve it within a month or two. Maybe they're afraid it will be cancelled soon, I dunno. But it is affecting the overall quality.

You and I clearly watching two very different GHs. The only place were GH excels is in production value. The story is lame.
And while Ron is not without his problems, you do need to know when to blame Ron for something and when to blame others. Ron had a big story planned for Will, Sonny, and Leo but those plans were sidelined by others. Just like I suspect this black storyline will be sidelined... just based on the MAGA viewers reaction to it.
Ron has two things going against him. 1) he's not a producer and 2) he's in New York. This is one of the reasons why he's always posting his breakdowns on Twitter. Things get changed during taping, things get cut for time, things are filmed in a way that he didn't intend. It happens and he can't control those things.

Have you noticed that there are NO actual, live children (babies, toddlers, otherwise) appearing on DOOL?
Eli and Lani's twins are nothing more than recorded baby cries and coos (my husband and I call all the infants "rubber babies," Ali's included).
Chloe Lane's son, Parker, is with his grandparents in New York.
Nicole's daughter, Holly, is never shown, although she apparently lives with her in Salem.
Brady's son Tate (husband and I call him "Taint") is with his mother in California.
And Brady and Kristen's daughter, Rachel, cries from time to time somewhere in the bowels of Marlena and John's home.
Gabi's daughter, Arianna, is with her gay dad(s) in Arizona. A cute Arianna was on for a few episodes before the big move to Arizona.

And on those shows, I'd say it's been far more noticeable, since kids are much more involved in stories and family scenes, and almost always grow up before our very eyes (no sorasing to speak of). Days has been doing masks since the 80s. The entire Salem Strangler storyline was just one mask after the next. I can understand people getting upset if the Young and the Restless does masks, but not Days. And yes we know that Kirsten and Kate and Sarah have different builds, but so did John and Roman.
Stefano was always coming back from the dead. Marlena had the devil in her and spent months in a golden cage. Kristen has lost her damned mind again, but she is doing nothing that isn't outside of the Days playbook. Of the two remaining shows, Days and GH can do these types of stories without missing a beat.
If the quibble is plot holes, then fine, because you really can drive a truck through some of the plot holes, and I do hope that some of them will be addressed. But not the masks.
And what's fun about this show is that it addresses the absurdity of it. The other day Jake said, I just moved here, I didn't know this kind of shit went down in this town. That was funny.

It was a bunch of things. I think the actor stopped caring about his looks and his performance. I think the anti-gay fans became more vocal and the show just gave up. Chandler was no without his problems, but it was telling that he came alive in almost every scene with everyone except Sonny.
The final straw with me was when Leo called Sonny a twink. I was appalled.

My thing with Chandler was that he was selling it with everyone else, which says to me is that it wasn't so much a Chandler problem as it was a Freddie problem. Between the craft services table and his side hustles, Freddie was not there.
