My sister went to see Bobby Sherman sing at Disneyland, at the peak of his fame in the 1970s. She said people were standing on tables in Tomorrowland to see him. Years later he built a detailed, 1/5 scale model of Disneyland's Main Street in his backyard. He was a Sherriff or deputy for a while, I think for San Bernardino, CA. His official fan site which is defunct since the site's creator passed away, states that he lives at his home in Encino, CA, and donates his time to the LAPD as a sworn officer, or at least he used to. He is now 75 and has 2 sons and 6 grandchildren. Go figure...

Mineo "Sal Mineo discovered and mentored actor Don Johnson." They had good chemistry...
[quote]This 16mm film has been lost for 50 years, a piece of history which no one knew existed. The film is 15 minutes in length and acts as both an introduction and a sample from the controversial John Herbert play Fortune and Men's Eyes, performed at the Coronet Theater in L.A. in 1969. The play was being directed by Sal Mineo, who also rewrote and reshaped the play a bit. Sal Mineo discovered and mentored actor Don Johnson in the part of Smitty, who had recently been seen in the San Francisco production of Your Own Thing. Producer Martin Poll saw both Don Johnson and Michael Greer in the play Fortune and Men's Eyes and cast them as the two leads in the lost cult film The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart (1970).

The Gruesome Murder of Hello Dolly Actor / Singer Danny Lockin
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 28, 2019 8:04 PM |
After his divorce, Lockin went back on tour with Hello Dolly!, continuing his role as Barnaby. He stayed with the tour until it ended; at which point, with his career in decline due to substance abuse issues, Lockin moved into his mother's apartment in Anaheim. Around 1974, Lockin began assisting his mother in running the Jean Lockin Dance Studio.[13] The studio closed in early 1977, and Lockin began teaching at another dance studio.
On the night of August 21, 1977, Lockin went to a gay bar in Garden Grove, California.[14] He left the bar with a slight, 34-year-old unemployed medical clerk, Charles Leslie Hopkins (who already had a police record, and was on probation at the time). Several hours later, Hopkins called police to say that a man had entered his apartment and tried to rob him.[13] Upon arrival, police found Lockin's body on the floor of Hopkin's apartment. He had been stabbed 100 times, and bled to death.[13] His body had also been mutilated after death.[14] Hopkins claimed he had no idea how the dead body got in his apartment.[15] He was arrested immediately.
Lockin was interred at Westminster Memorial Park cemetery in Westminster, California.
Trial Police found a book of pornographic pictures in Hopkins' apartment which showed men being tortured during sexual orgies.[14] Prosecutors initially intended to seek a first degree murder conviction, and to use the book to prove that Hopkins had planned the murder. Hopkins' trial began in May 1978, but was delayed for two months after the prosecutor was injured in an unrelated accident.[14] During the delay, the Supreme Court of the United States held in United States v. Chadwick, 433 U.S. 1 (1977), that police may not engage in warrantless searches in the absence of an exigency.[16] On July 31, the trial court ruled the pornographic book inadmissible as evidence.[14] On August 8, the trial court judge held that the death penalty could not be applied to Hopkins due to lack of evidence of premeditation.[17]
On September 28, 1978, Hopkins was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to a three-year prison term.[15] Since the court was permitted to consider suppressed evidence if the evidence was not seized merely to obtain a lengthier prison sentence and it did not "shock the conscience of the court," the trial judge increased Hopkins' sentence from the usual three years to four years.[15] Prosecutors said that with good behavior, Hopkins would be released in two years (considering time served).[15]

Bobby had an impressive recording career. He released 107 songs, 23 singles and 10 albums between 1962 and 1976, earning seven gold singles, one platinum single, five gold albums and seven top 40 hits. He also experienced permanent hearing loss from the loud screaming at his concerts.
From Wikipedia:
[quote]In 1962, Sal Mineo took Sherman under his wing and wrote two songs for him as well as arranging for Sherman to record the songs, then in 1964 when Mineo asked Sherman to sing with his old band at a Hollywood party (where many actors and agents were in attendance) Sherman made such an impression at that party he was signed with an agent and eventually landed a part on the ABC television show Shindig! as a regular cast member/house singer. Shindig! ran for two years keeping Sherman busy from 1964-66.

Read an interesting interview once with Robert Westbrook, the author of the novel, “The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart”. Originally cast in the leads were Richard Thomas and Kate Heflin. Then the producer or one of the powers-that-be at MGM saw Don Johnson in “Fortune and Men’s Eyes” onstage, became enamored with him and replaced Thomas with Johnson. Westbrook thought it was a terrible idea and flat-out says in the interview that Don Johnson was a hustler of the most obvious sort. Then Kate Heflin (daughter of Van, by the way) was demoted to a smaller role in the film and replaced by Dianne Hull. Westbrook later married Heflin. (Crazy the things you remember, and yes, I’m an eldergay!)

R155 Thanks for the interesting tidbit. Westbrook said (in this 2014 interview) that experience in Hollywood made him quit writing for 15 years. Geez.
[quote]When did you first consider yourself a writer?
[quote]I suppose when I was 17. A few years later, in 1969, I wrote my first novel, “The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart,” which was made into a very bad movie by MGM. This was so discouraging, I stopped writing for nearly 15 years, turning my attention to studying jazz piano. In the mid-1980s, living in Hawaii, I started writing mystery novels – 3 novels for Crown Publishers, 4 for Signet, and my non-fiction memoir about my mother and Fitzgerald, “Intimate Lies,” which HarperCollins published in 1995.

[quote] Don Johnson always looked younger than his years and he's still got it at 69. I think that SF socialite he married is keeping him sober.
Really?
[quote] Jane Fonda and was the only one in the ensemble cast of older stars who brought any hotness and charisma.
Jane Fonda is a decade older than Johnson.

Adorable teenage Sal stumps the panel on What's My Line in 1957 at the tender age of 18 (between Oscar noms for Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Exodus (1960). Listen for the double entendre @ 2:30. Even host John Daly looks smitten.

Here’s “Special Guest Star” Sal Mineo on “The Name of the Game” with Sharon Farrell as a Janis Joplin-type singer.

Bobby Sherman, possibly the hottest musical heartthrob of all time.

I paid him back for the drums.....did he get anything back from any other trick?

Probably not, JB. You were a pretty good guy, though.
BTW, Sherman paid him $3,000 after the shakedown by Sal's lover Courtney Burr. That was probably around 1970, when Sherman was at the height of his popularity. That's the equivalent of almost $20,000 today.
