Can someone explain why on earth the Spice Girls, who don't actually exist anymore, would be asked? Not sure why the gossips are only focusing on Adele, etc. when the Coronation Concert, aside from choirs and orchestras, is also going to feature international artists, not strictly British ones. Just the very fact that these generic British pop names are being thrown around shows that it's all made up. If you'd actually paid attention to the description of the concert, you'd know that all these "reports" are complete rubbish and don't reflect the actual plans for the concert.
[quote]Attended by a public audience including volunteers from The King and The Queen Consort’s many charity affiliations, the concert will see a world-class orchestra play interpretations of musical favourites fronted by some of the world’s biggest entertainers, alongside performers from the world of dance. The performances will be supported by staging and effects located on the Castle’s East Lawn and will also feature a selection of spoken word sequences delivered by stars of stage and screen.
[quote]Alongside the stars of the concert, the show will also see an exclusive appearance from The Coronation Choir. This diverse group will be created from the nation’s keenest community choirs and amateur singers from across the United Kingdom, such as Refugee choirs, NHS choirs, LGBTQ+ singing groups and deaf signing choirs. A new documentary exploring the formation of The Coronation Choir will tell the stories of the people representing the many faces and voices of the country. The Coronation Choir will appear alongside The Virtual Choir, made up of singers from across the Commonwealth, for a special performance on the night.

In actually important British and royal news, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has asked King Charles to meet Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, when she visits Windsor today to finalise the details of the Northern Ireland agreement. The meeting between King Charles and Von der Leyen is intended as symbolic support for the agreement, in the face of extremist Brexiter and DUP opposition. An agreement would be a huge boon to the UK, opening up many channels for improved relations between the UK and EU and create economic opportunities for the UK.

Blood and sand!
There are several threads that touch on this subject yet OP cannot get things correct.
Adele, Elton John, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and rest of top performers who have turned down invitations to perform at coronation concert did so because they are either on tour already, will be during time of event, or otherwise away from England up to day before event making it impossible.
Only odd ducks are the Spice Girls who turned down their invite for no reasons given. The group hasn't done much of anything other than announce they were supposedly getting back together, so maybe they are focusing on working that bit out, booking gigs, etc...
For final fucking time few if any of those asked thus far have turned down invites just so make a point.

It’s a shame really that the coronation concert isn’t a play because actors tend to be more of the Gagging For A Knighthood type than popular musicians. Actors particularly tended to fling themselves at Charles’ Prince’s Trust.
But there are a few music royalists: Ellie Goulding, Katherine Jenkins, James Blunt and Craig David.
I find it hard to believe that the Spice Girls wouldn’t be all over this. Given the high grade acts are saying they’re too busy, musicians who announce their presence now will look like they’re the B-List. I am sure that Brian May will dutifully turn up to perform a guitar solo and the Spice Girls will announce their set in late April.

| by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 27, 2023 4:54 PM |
For (hopefully) last fucking time, no one has outright refused anything. It all is coming down to scheduling conflicts.
"A proposed full Spice Girls reunion is off as they are unable to commit to the show because the five individual members, Mel B, Melanie C, Victoria Beckham, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton, are too busy with their individual pursuits to fit in rehearsals."
You're basically asking internationally famous personages to drop whatever they are doing at short notice, develop and rehearse and act that needs to be ready in four months which is buckets of time if they aren't doing something else.
First simply often is just not possible contractually. Second also simply just may not work even if said performer could get themselves back to England with a week before concert it just isn't enough time to pull things together.
When you consider the Spice Girls have only just announced their reunion it is more than certain they've got enough problems getting themselves together for that tour. Last thing they need is for their first gig to be this coronation concert, done before they've gotten themselves together.

Harry Styles has been on a tour of the world since summer 2021 and the Coronation would be a breeze for him - just show up and play some of his tour set. He even has a three week break from his European dates with May 6th in the middle, and he lives in London, so there is no reason for him to decline except to avoid the terrible PR backlash that will befall anyone under 35 who plays that ill fated concert.

Musicians don't get a knighthood until they're at least 50, by which time it will be William bestowing the honours. William is quite a different proposition - he's not a proven adulterer, he's not married to a pariah, and he's Diana's son. He'll be much more popular than the racist crustacean Charles and maybe A listers will perform at his coronation.

"All" is a rather large claim.
That said, some part of me thinks it divine justice on a King who is dim enough to suppose that pop concerts are appropriate for a coronation. He's confusing this with the Platinum Jubilee, where it was appropriate and the honoree was a living legend.
A coronation, especially here, is a sacramental, solemn rite carried out by the Archbishop of Canterbury and involving anointing with holy oil.
The concert and the volunteer day all smack of trying too hard.
They should leave it as the sacramental thingy and celebrate that, and they can still slim down the excesses as they do so.
Although it totally sucks that the peers are only wearing morning suits instead of ermine because that means their wives won't be wearing ermine robes and tiaras. What a bummer.
Kate and Camilla will be decked out in diamonds, and I think the smart money will be on white satin gowns. Anne, possibly, as well, and maybe Sophie.
I suppose there will be hats galore to critique, though.
And I hope to God Kate doesn't wear that Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara again. I am sooooo sick of it.

UK tabloids have to close off their comments section for most Camilla articles. This isn't a jab at her its just a fact. Camillas tabloid contacts are in a constant state off anxiety as they have to try and churn out positive articles but it's not working. My tabloid friend says the comments are getting more prolific. All the positive bought PR spin can't hide the truth. They just aren't that liked out of the UK rightwing conservative bubble. And someone within one of the palaces is leaking against them both. Miss Jackson assured The Royal Palace that she is all set to perform her hits 'Wicked Love', 'Sex Box' and 'Hot Potato' for anyone willing to purchase a Spirit Airlines ticket to London.

Yeah, and every excuse has been refuted. Someone already posted that Styles is not working for weeks during that time nor is Adele. It’s unsurprising that this lot will find any way to dispute it because anything said that they don’t agree with (that’s usually backed up with news articles) they dispute, deflect and argue that it’s not true. I mean in this case the Spice Girls turned it down! I’m sure they were booked up, are lying about being approached for pr and need to be booked two years in advance.

R127, nothing at all has been said anywhere by anyone about who will or will not be performing at the Coronation Concert. If you think anything is "backed up with news articles", then you're nuts. The only thing certain is that the performers will be singing to the accompaniment of an orchestra, while there will also be dancers and spoken word pieces. Anyone going on about the Spice Girls has no fucking idea whatsoever as to what the Coronation Concert is about.

Bit odd for that American publication to do an article on this made-up subject, r143, as absolutely nothing has been publicly confirmed yet and it's all nonsense fabricated by the media and Markle stans, just like the fake "PR disasters" Rolling Stone alludes to. | by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 3, 2023 12:06 PM |
R143. American publications should be banned from writing articles about the royal family. The level of ignorance is so high.
That article is actually saying that the 90s were a scandal-free toke for the royal family? And that the royal family had decision-making power in the colonial period? And, since it did, the current royal family would be responsible for those past decisions? And the royal family had a duty to apologise for them even though a British monarch would never, ever issue an apology unless it was mandated and approved by the government. Or dies Rolling Stone believe a hereditary monarch should have the power to decide when and to whom an entire nation apologises? Is that the kind of power Rolling Stone thinks the King or Queen should have?
The next time a US president is snubbed, perhaps we can have an article about how the US presidency represents slavery and genocide of native people.

I suspect it's because they're all furious that poor Petula Clark was never made a Dame. Asswipes!
| by Anonymous | reply 160 | March 5, 2023 8:55 PM |
R159, the small amount of money that the concert will cost is not state money or taxpayer money. It's the government's job to secure adequate funding for those issues, not for the King to pay for things to make up for government incompetency. Do you also suggest that money that is spent on arts and culture in Britain be redirected to food and shelter? Moreover, I'm sure if you asked the people of Britain if they're looking forward to the Coronation Concert and other coronation events or if they believe they should be scrapped and the money redirected to food and shelter, they'd tell you to stop being a dimbim and of course the Coronation Concert and other events should go ahead. If anything, the royal family do amazing work for various disadvantaged groups, with a far greater impact than redirecting the concert money to food and shelter. The Concert is nothing to do with ego, it's a cool idea and the people want concerts, events and parties for the coronation. Charles is King, that's as unique as you can get, his ego doesn't need anything.
You have absolutely no idea who has been invited to perform, who has said yes, who has declined and for what reasons they declined. I'm absolutely certain that nobody would decline because they believe the tabloids and Meghan and hence don't like Charles.

Bright enough to see that Charles is world class ugly, r186.
But why you mad, though?
| by Anonymous | reply 187 | April 4, 2023 6:40 PM |
R184 Being the Head of State and the Head of the Commonwealth doesn’t require any work that any semi-literate slob of the street couldn’t do: signing documents, opening parliaments, hosting 10 minute conversations with foreign guests, turning up to State Dinners.
But what the British monarch NEEDS to do is entirely different, which be a symbol OF Britain FOR the British. That is to maintain the monarchy for years and generations to come. The Queen was very, very canny about not just remaining relevant, but remaining popular. And it took great effort and control on her part. You can count her fuck-ups on one hand.
Charles has a more difficult job, because of the times, because he isn’t his mother, and because he is himself.

[quote] what does Charles’s physical appearance have to do with his ability to carry out the role of Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth?
You can’t be this clueless or maybe you can be. Physical appearance matters in every part of society. You think if some good looking man was about to become King there wouldn’t be more excitement? Pretty privilege is real. I’m not surprised there isn’t much enthusiasm for Charles and Camilla. They’re too old to just be crowned. This is like 20 years too late.
| by Anonymous | reply 189 | April 5, 2023 3:05 PM |
The biggest favour Charles could do for the future of the monarchy is to drop dead by the end of the year. If he lives into his 90s the UK is doomed to have one geriatric monarch after another. William will be in his 60s when he finally gets to the throne.

| by Anonymous | reply 198 | April 11, 2023 3:27 PM |
I’m surprised but not shocked. I always thought he would get older acts since the younger ones were turning him down. For all the ‘we love the Queen’ spiel, they only got one younger act, Ed Sheehan, for the Jubilee. As performers I like both Bette and Lionel, but Bette is known more for acting then singing and they are both American! It’s not a great look TBH. I thought he would just get Sir Paul for the millionth time. I think he should have scraped big name performers altogether, but his ego is too large. I am slightly gleeful thinking about the yanks troll. Charles had to import and get bailed out by Americans for his British coronation. Haha
