Who's seen it? Who liked it? What do you think of it compared to the newer CBS miniseries with Whoopi?
The consensus seems to be that this version had stellar casting, music, and effects, but suffered from a low budget and the constraints of network TV. Most of the juiciest parts of the novel can't be shown on network TV - or on TV at all - so any depiction is bound to be watered-down. It's still pretty fun, even as a cheesy TV miniseries, and I've seen plenty of mentions on DL over the years.
Homo connection: Much of the story is set in Colorado, but because of a controversial antigay law on the books in Colorado at the time, producers and actors refused to film in the state. They instead filmed in Utah, out of solidarity with the gays.

Well I’d agree with one of those three as I still have the soundtrack CD somewhere. Some of the casting was good (Ruby Dee, Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer) but some was questionable at best (Molly Ringwald and Jamey Sheridan was awful as Flagg) and the budget TV effects were pretty terrible.
I haven’t watched the more recent series so can’t compare but would imagine it at least has better effects

It was miles better than that mangled abortion made a few years ago. It also has one of the best opening scenes I've ever seen.

The Stand from a few years ago was fucking awful. It's a great story but somehow they managed to fuck it all up and make it tedious and boring.

I started watching it and gave it up, but I bought the paperback that came out at the same time. Unfortunately, it smelled so bad, I got a migraine if I read it for very long, and I gave up on it as well.

I worship the ‘94 version, I saw it right after I read the book. I remember everything about the night I watched it live! I’ve seen it once more, on blu-ray, & it really held up well. My only complaint was the special effects were of its time, & the ending was rushed.
I watched the CBS version last year & there’s not much to recommend it. The only improvement was Nat Wolff’s impressive turn as Lloyd Henreid.

Flagg was unfuckable with his mullet and Canadian tuxedo. He looked fresh off the Alberta prairie

r2 I thought you may be here. Years ago you sent me links to copies of King's books, thank you.
I found Jamey Sheridan in the 1994 version scarier than Skarsgard.
Laura San Giacomo was better than Heard, one of the major things that happens with Nadine is that her hair keeps getting grayer and then turns white so Heard as a blonde didn't work.
I actually preferred the 1994 cast except for Molly Ringwald. Frannie must be hard to make likeable because I didn't care for the 2020 Frannie either.
Harold was miscast in both because he was supposed to be fat.
Whoopi in the 2020 version was better than I thought she would be as Mother Abigail but the problem is now when I see Whoopi it's hard for me to see her as another character.

I am glad you enjoyed the link r9! I always thought that a young Shannen Doherty would be a good Fanny. I hated Rob Lowe but have mellowed on that. The chick in the new one looked special needs and I loathe Ringwald.
I would possibly at least enjoy the new one a little bit (as a movie, not so much as a making of The Stand) if someone took it upon themselves to splice it in order. It would at least not look like something that came out of my dog's ass.

I enjoyed it overall but thought Randall Flag should have been more appealing. I thought that character was a lot better done in the new adaptation. The guy in the original looked like a redneck.

I am going to watch OP's link just to see the opening scene again with Don't Fear The Reaper. Classic.

I finally tried a chocolate Payday last year, I remember Harold ate them in the book but couldn't find them here.

OP I do not understand what you mean about the novel is still t violent to be filmed today. Much the same level of violence was in Game of Thrones and Walking Dead on TV. The great shooting of the Judge, (ya gotta include the head shot), and Dayna shoving her throat into the shattered window seem kinda common place today.
I adore the book. Lots. I have read it many times. I actually cut the book down to dates, every page, and read the appropriate passages on the date they happened over two years.
OK, I was utterly obsessed.
Franny is always the hardest part to cast. The 19 year old wise woman above her years.

That was one of the things Stephen King changed for the first paperback edition back in the 80s, r13. In the copy I read Harold ate Milky Ways. Apparently chocolate Paydays didn't exist in 1978 when the novel was first published. Was Stephen King psychic or did he just make a mistake? Maybe Maine was a test market for chocolate Paydays which actually were introduced in 1980. Useless trivia for you...

The soundtrack to the original version is so haunting and lovely. They had a great chance to do the right thing with the new version and they fucked it up

Flagg had a huge demon cock.

Mother Abigail turned evil when she realized that Matlock wouldn't be on anymore.

Shawn Mendes would be perfect for Larry Underwood.

R19 He'd be too busy lusting after Flagg's cock. Trust me, voice of experience here.
