I was reading a subreddit. The people on there seem to lean left politically, but sound uneducated. Lots of use of "brah", "bro", "bruv" etc.
They seem to have their own special lingo that they use with each other. "Can confirm" is frequent response to someone's observation.
In addition, I saw jaw-dropping sentences such as "I'm kinda low key excited about that movie coming out, but I'm legit high key excited about the this other one."
All in all it seemed to be one big conformist circle jerk.

| by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 29, 2023 5:54 PM |
You're just cranky and old. Young people use the colloquial rhetoric of their time, which is unfamiliar to you. Writing in a forum is completely casual and informal. You shouldn't assume anything about their intelligence based on this. Asshole.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 29, 2023 5:55 PM |
Yeah, I don't really see Reddit as any worse than DL. Though, I don't use it for the same sorts of topics. I'm usually looking for something very specific. Like NCAA basketball tournament game threads or discussing the latest music by a specific artist. I generally don't engage with Reddit for "ripped from the headlines" like the Tennessee shooting or Jonathan Majors' arrest.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 29, 2023 5:56 PM |
DL has ruined me. I got kicked off reddit's politics page yesterday for this comment "Marjorie Taylor Greene's brow ridge, jaw and nose just grew larger due to her big brain, not testosterone and steroids and suggest otherwise is nuts, even if MTG now has them."

R10 cont... And I'd also imagine that for most people under 35, most of the writing they have done in their lifetime has been casual and informal such as text messaging friends. I know you never learned to use that Jitterbug that your niece got you in 2007 but people aren't really expected to follow the rules of grammar when they're texting and DMing and tweeting and commenting. It's totally conversational. Cunt!

You’re an idiot, OP. There are literally hundreds of thousands of subreddits in active existence. You can no more generalize about the entire population of Reddit based on the members of a single subreddit than you can generalize about the entire population of Datalounge based on one thread.
Although, I guess you probably *can* generalize about Dataloungers based on one thread? But you understand.

| by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 29, 2023 6:31 PM |
I wrote this on a DL thread last year:
Datalounge is infinitely better than Reddit.
Some of my reasons:
1. DL bumps threads to the top of the page. The 2015 bump troll notwithstanding, this means that robust conversations continue for days or weeks or even months ("Do you find Blanche DuBois a sympathetic character?" is a recent example of this.) Reddit posts have a shelf life of a day or two. They keep falling down the page (unless they are stickied by the mods - and that rarely happens.). DL is far superior for serious exchanges.
2. While no forum is truly anonymous (Muriel has my CC info, of course), it's a lot easier to be anonymous on DL than it is on Reddit. Any other user can see your entire posting history on Reddit, so if you've posted for two or three years, all those posts are discoverable. If you want to ask an anonymous question, you have to create another account. It gets tiresome.
3. I feel as if DL has its own little subculture, with its own inside jokes and jargon. I can find threads on entertainment, porn, politics, history, literature, travel, fashion, and life questions here (for example, the recent threads on how to cope with the death of a parent.) Yes, we have trolls. But the number of thoughtful replies outweighs the trollish ones.
4. No other place on the internet makes me laugh like the DL. I tend to be too liberal with my W&Ws, but there are some truly witty bitches here.
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 29, 2023 6:32 PM |
Wonder why OP post is greyed out? It’s just somebody giving they’d opinion, not trolling.
I like Reddit for checking in on specialist topics, and of some my music artists (I don’t use Facebook or Twitter and barely instagram so I don’t get tend to see otherwise). On occasion I have issues with the hive mind. I got a permanent ban from r/entertainment just for saying, simply and non-confrontationally, that I didn’t think JK Rowling was a bigot and that hadn’t said anything actually “transphobic”. You aren’t allowed any discussion on certain topics, so I was cast out and, even though I’m complaining about it here, no real fucks were given. I think there are a lot of trans people on Reddit and in moderation positions. I remember there was some scandal about one particular one a year or two ago.

If memory serves, Tybee was a DL-er from the old days who moved to QWHIP (now dead) before starting his own board. He was constantly banning Erna/MPC and then letting him come back—not sure why Tybee had such a soft spot for him.

It is actually very easy to look at a user's entire post history here at Datalounge as well. Or at least, a user's entire post history for the 600 individual threads that are loaded and stored, in their entirety, to a temporary browser file on your computer each and every time you visit Datalounge. That's a lot of threads and a lot of posts and every post is linked to a specific UUID that is unique to the user. If you have the basic tools available and you know where to look, you will see that Datalounge really isn't all that anonymous at all. Do people know your name? No. But true anonymity on the internet is about much more than that.

Being simultaneously a Redditor and a DLer, I can genuinely say I prefer making my personal opinions here. I won't lie- I'm a bitch and so is my mother. Reddit has a very low tolerance for bitchery and DL is nothing but bitchery.
I met a guy once through Reddit, I've been thinking about him lately because we had a lot in common, but we had to split things after a while. He had a lot of shit wrong that I couldn't help him with, regardless of my acceptance. He honestly is more of a Reddit neckbeard than I care to admit, but there are some pretty good neckbeards out there notwithstanding the idiots on Reddit. The only sub I've ever known that was more acerbically savage and funny than DL was the now-defunct r/o&a. Those posters made you all look like delicate sweet pussycats. I've never laughed, cried or clutched pearls harder in an online space. Sometimes I'll mentally drift into a space where I miss it, and then I snap back into reality and remember what a deeply deranged forum it actually was.
Their legacy lives on. There's still a user languishing somewhere in jail over the egging-on of other users of that sub (Vizio soundbars are high quality audio systems for the price, that's all I'll say).

Reddit is extremely variable. The larger, default subreddits are generally garbage and populated by obnoxious teenagers and morons. The smaller and more specific subreddits tend to be much better. It can be a great place to share information and ask questions about your hobbies and niche interests. I've learned a lot about cooking from there. Before it got banned, r/gendercritical was off the wall nuts. All those women in that echo chamber got progressively crazier as time went on. I'd check in once in a while and then, nope. I think they were screaming "groomer" before the right picked up the chant.

One of the annoying thing about Reddit is that on news subs, you scroll down looking for some insightful commentary and the top comments are invariably a sea of stupid jokes, puns or quips. At least on DL there is some genuine wit and, amid the bitchery, also some intelligent discussion. Sometimes.

Thanks and interesting R98. I mean... what they've all said is pretty much bang on.
I really hate that we are known as a group of racists and transphobics. That really sucks. And really... it's true. Not everything can be perfection here - but the racism and transphobia on here is rampant and just relentless. Certainly not something we should be proud of. Some of DL should hang their heads in shame about what kind of people they've let themselves become and what they're doing. We know some of them are trolls - but some of them are other gays and lesbians. Somehow that's even worse.
*Except not correct is that you [bold]can[/bold] post/start threads here without paying - but you have to build up several weeks of "reputation" time first on your ISP number and not clear your cookies. It's in the DL help pages somewhere. Membership is about $20 bucks a year from memory so it's very affordable. Impossible to be more than 500 of us in total including lurkers now. It's a pity more people don't support the site that has been in our lives for so long.

R101 While DL has its fair share of trolls (many being the same mentally ill hanger-ons with multiple accounts), it's easy to self govern by FF and fixing your settings to hide and block the worst. Reddit's been filled with its fair share of bigots and trolls over the years, so the idea that person has that this is some 4chan-lite monstrosity is comical.
Not to mention much of DL's humor and wit comes from a specific type of gay community culture that's been lost to some in recent generations. Historical context and knowledge in the age of social media is dead.

OMG I was just over there. They were complaining about high rents (someone was asking a question) and it was like watching tweedle dee explaining something to tweedledum. I don't know why anyone would go there asking for advice.

Reddit is good for local news and resources (city subreddits) and cute animal content. Everything else has been ruined by gross incels and crazy power-tripping moderators who ban site users for stating formerly self-evident truths such as 'men cannot get pregnant'.
