Why have they not revived "Camelot" since Richard Harris died?

When stars get really associated with one musical, they play the same role over and over again in revivals, and the show becomes indelibly associated with them: Yul Brynner in "The King and I," Carol Channing in "Hello, Dolly!", Rex Harrison in "My fair Lady." But then they either get too old to play the part or die, and the show can finally be revived. Even "Funny Girl" is finally being revived with Beanie Whatsername. So isn't it time they revived "Camelot"? They could have Brian Stokes Mitchell or Norm Lewis as Arthur.

Some beautiful music, but not a really a great production to sit through. If I remember correctly, it really drags at times.

Large cast. Multiple sets. Big orchestra.

You do the math.

by Anonymousreply 2March 25, 2022 5:40 PM

Too expensive these days to do the show justice; the libretto needs some work and a director who understand fast pacing; A Major Star to attract an audience at those absurd ticket prices. Stokes Mitchell & Lewis are fine performers but you need a Hugh Jackman (who would be totally wrong for the role) to fill the seats.

Not to mention Robert Goulet.

by Anonymousreply 6April 25, 2022 5:20 AM

The whole musical has an air of sadness.

The king is ineffectual. The Round Table is splitting up. Lancelot is betraying the king.

The mood is autumnal.

Richard Harris died in 2002, there was a 1993 Broadway revival of Camelot.

I don't know about Richard Harris on stage in revivals of Camelot, but he was absolutely awful in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2022 6:54 AM

R20 Yes, he was.

He looked bored, uncomfortable as though he was in constant pain from some unexplained malady.

Harris only worked into the business because people assumed that he represented the butch young working class of Modern Britain. He never displayed any character acting skills at all from 1960 until his death.

Most astute observers agreed Vanessa was much more regal. She could have played King Arthur with ease.

Harris & Saul Rubinek were all I liked in "Unforgiven" - wonderful performances.

Maybe Beanie can star as Genevieve in the revival when she’s done opening Funny Girl?

I can't think who could be cast as King Arthur; they must be their 30s or 40s and regal!

R26, Billy Porter perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 27September 24, 2022 2:57 PM

R14, there was indeed a Paper Mill production, in 2003, with Brent Barrett as Arthur (pretty good), their beloved Glory Crampton as Guinevere (bland and boring) and Matt Bogart as Lancelot (lovely of voice and face, but unwisely employing something that he thought was a French accent).

A few years after that, I seem to remember catching a stop of a touring production with Lou Diamond Phillips (!) as Arthur and Bogart again as Lancelot.

There was the NY Phil version (which was televised) starring Nathan Gunn, Marin Mazzie, and Gabriel Byrne (with DL fave Fran Drescher!)

The New York Philharmonic production was a train wreck at many points, largely because no one had bothered to figure out whether Gabriel Byrne (a marvelous actor) could stay in time with an orchestra (he couldn't).

[quote]The whole musical has an air of sadness.

I saw Camelot production in DC put on by the DC Shakespeare company (I think); it's true - the musical does have an air of sadness about it and it's dated, but it's also got some good musical numbers (though I think some of them could be cut for modern audiences) and I think in a post-Trump world, people mind respond to a story about the idea of how despite their promise, the current generation fucked things up but are still trying to leave a better world for their children.

by Anonymousreply 34March 22, 2023 12:50 PM

Perhaps Richard Harris was channeling Wart pining for his old life.

by Anonymousreply 35March 22, 2023 1:05 PM

I hate to say this knowing what a polarizing figure he is, but I think this musical could use the Lin Manual Miranda treatment to give this old standard a hip, cool kids makeover

by Anonymousreply 36March 22, 2023 1:10 PM

Just leave it be. It was fine. Re-watch it off you like but leave it alone. Develop other new projects and properties. Remake only the ones that did a terrible job with superior material. Like Mame.

by Anonymousreply 37March 22, 2023 1:14 PM

I thought the movie was abysmal. Vanessa Redgrave doesn't have the strong lilting voice that Julie Andrews had. With that said, I would like to see a remake as it does have many lovely musical numbers.

I'm not sure what I think of Andrew Burnap as Arthur. He seems to lack the quality that both Richard Burton and Richard Harris had. Maybe he needs to change his name to Richard??
