I think this happens a lot in large urban gay communities, particularly in LA and SF. Often gay men want to be noticed CONSTANTLY among their peers, and you can get away with something in WeHo or the Castro you could never get away with in Omaha or Albuquerque. This is why gay porn stars frequently have incredibly stupid haircuts. I think Adam Killian has had every stupid gay haircut known to man over his 20 year career.

OP is on to something here. So many guys would look soooo much better if they would stop with the compulsive need to alter their natural looks to be as unflattering as possible. If it’s not hideous tattoos, it’s odd haircuts or ‘artesian’ facial hair and usually accompanied by a terrible personally style and affectation.
I see guys who put the bells and whistles on but do it right. It’s like an ‘editorial’ look. If done properly, it can enhance ones features and it works.
But I’m talking about the looks that make people look worse. Not better. It’s rampant. OP is a perfect example.
It takes me 5 minutes to get ready and head out the door. I do not relate to people who spend so much time and energy and come out looking less better.

I'm not a fan of the pompadour, the curly top pompadour, the flopsy-mopsy wildly asymmetrical pompadour, and side-flop doll head hair, but it's his head and his hair.
