Both were semi-nepotism actors with horrid addictions, talent and industry goodwill. Both used the same drugs. Both were the same age.

RDJ was a better actor. Also, he managed not to pass out and drown in a hot tub.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 13, 2024 1:24 AM |
RDJ actually went to jail and suffered public humiliation, not to mention career repercussions. Perry was never really punished for his drug use (other than, well, dying).
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 13, 2024 1:24 AM |
I never got the idea that Matthew Perry actually cared about acting. RDJ seems devoted to it, in part because he was raised with it to an extent that Perry was not. Perry could deliver a punchline. RDJ could deliver a performance.
Perry was good-looking and clearly knew it. RDJ was beautiful and nobody knew it, least of all him.
Also - and I am not blaming either man for this - Perry's addiction issues seemed more scarring physically. RDJ never reached colectomy bag levels of dependence.

Matthew Perry desired fame more than achieving greatness in his craft. He had an empty void that he believed being popular and in the spotlight would fill, but it never did. He was basically always alone with no friend or family support system. For RDJ it was the opposite.

| by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 13, 2024 1:48 AM |
RDJ is extremely bright and seems to have a capacity for self-insight that Perry did not. That makes a world of difference in getting well. Also, I suspect Downey's intelligence makes him want to use his brain rather than fry it.

| by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 13, 2024 1:57 AM |
Not only is RDJ an excellent and versatile actor, but he knew the business from a young age and was serious about navigating and surviving it (to the extent of marrying a tough producer to compensate for what he knew were his weaknesses).
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 13, 2024 1:59 AM |
RDJ married a woman who pretty much helped clean him up, stay sober, controlled his career and publicity. Perry didn't have anyone like that.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 13, 2024 2:02 AM |
There is a factor in terms of wealth. Perry had it financially made after Friends. RDJ was stone-cold broke coming out of jail. Perry's ass was in butter. RDJ had to hustle to live. Again, I don't blame either man for this. But RDJ was forced to think of his career in practical terms. Perry's career was already over.
It's a lot easier to give in to your personal demons if you don't need to worry about who or what is feeding them.

| by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 13, 2024 3:39 AM |
Could you see Matthew Perry in a Marvel movie? He was a one note actor who made it big young, cashed out and couldn’t figure out what to do with himself other than drugs. He wasn’t “beloved” either except for one tv role. Also, see all reasons listed above.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 13, 2024 3:51 AM |
Didn’t realize Marvel movies required acing depth.
Perry had great comic timing, he made a lot of people laugh on Friends. Downey was fired after one season on SNL.
Perry also got several Emmy noms for non-Friends roles.
Coparing these two makes no sense to me. Each has/had his own talents.

| by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 13, 2024 4:33 AM |
i'm not trying to gloss over his addiction/drug use, but Perry was always "Chandler" whether he was skinny and strung out on opiates, fat, or regular. He inhabited that character. And, in life, things happen in your life (including addiction). He seemed to stay in character throughout all of that. That's acting.
Sometimes actors really can get just one character and do it really well in their career. Think of Jon Hamm in Mad Men (there are other examples, but i'm lazy and naming just this one).
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 13, 2024 4:34 AM |
R42, sorry, which one of them died of a tragic addiction?
Perry did not make it.
Which is a shame.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 13, 2024 4:51 AM |
R36, Marvel films did not require depth. They got it anyway, chiefly because RDJ established an approach to the material that opened it up for other talented performers to make their own imprint on what could easily have otherwise been completely stock characters.
Perry was a gifted TV comic, but knocking RDJ for SNL is misguided. Joan Cusack got fired too, and she's a wonderful comic actress.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 13, 2024 4:54 AM |
Youre right R-45 you are lazy and if Jon Hamm is also lazy he can fall back on his big dick or let some of us fall back on his big dick, seems to me it’s only fair.

Perry may not have had the film success RDJ did, but he was well suited to “Friends” and he’ll never be forgotten because of that.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 13, 2024 5:34 AM |
Perry’s passive income probably made the difference in their trajectories. RDJ had to hustle for work for a few years after his jail stint. And Perry’s best days, his image, his fans are all stuck in that era 1994-2004. That must take a toll on the psyche.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 13, 2024 5:40 AM |
I enjoyed the odd movie "Fur" he was in during the hustle-times. It really showcased him as being a talented actor to me. I thought it was a bit of a leap for him.
That was so many years ago and I've never seen it again...so that is the impression it left on me. It made me willing/wanting to see him in other films.

Some solid, still very watchable performances by RDJ that show his versatility:
Weird Science (1985), Less than Zero (1987), Soapdish (1991), Chaplin (1992), Richard III (1995), Wonder Boys (2000), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), Good Night and Good Luck (2005), Zodiac (2007), Iron Man (2008 etc.), Sherlock Holmes (2009 etc.).
That's just a few. He could carry a movie or slip into the background. Could Matthew Perry handle that range?

Remember I was very young then

Thought the more that loved me
The more loved I'd be

RDJ looks and acts sober imo. Also you can do drugs that aren’t illegal street drugs. RDJ was also very good in Short Cuts but he is playing himself. He was just very natural in front of the camera with charisma to spare. Never shitty in anything and seemed to always give everything 110%. Would Matthew Perry have made it without Friends or in a solo role carrying a tv show? I can’t really see it. See also—his male costars on Friends.

Downey was bristling with sex and talent, had adventures with cocaine and jail and got great memorable projects, in which he has always been compelling. Perry, on TV, also did cocaine. Otherwise I see no comparison or similarities. Plus Downey's still alive and fuckable ( Perry's ignominious death and revealing stories about his life of dick like ways add to the reasons he was a loser) so truly the victory is his.

His courtroom crying was fake, IMO.
I agree that his wife is the secret to his success. She's a regular woman, and she puts up with his shit. Keeps him on track.

I'm not famous. I'm not rich. And I try to be nice to people. But if I am having a day, I will snark or sass people. I'm human. And so are celebrities. Even if some of them are huge cunts in real life, so what? Show people have to be a bit nuts anyway. Bottom line they are paid and are famous for playing a character in a film or on TV. | by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 17, 2024 12:21 AM |
The real reason and I’m saying this as an ongoing recovery addict is circumstance. That’s what it all boils down to. RDJ was forced to get his act together by necessity. In many ways Matthew being on a hit television show enabled his addiction. Hear me out. Most addicts are functioning. A lot of people don’t know that. Most druggies aren’t strung out junkies on the street, etc. The show enabled him to get his act together for 6 months of the year, while still using, and then binging on off season. RDJ was the next “it boy” deemed to be the next Tom Cruise but the scheduling of a film star enabled him to overindulge. Ultimately he became uninsurable. He had to get his shit together. He was losing money, losing friends.
That’s why I know he doesn’t use anymore. All hardcore drug addicts cannot be functionally once they maintain sobriety for some time. They will over indulge and die as Matthew Perry did.

You'll need to ask the actors themselves that, r108.
They're the ones who if on television often want to move to movies, and if in movies aren't usually looking to move to television.

| by Anonymous | reply 111 | March 17, 2024 5:16 PM |
It all stems from the snobbery of old Hollywood and the studio machine. However the tide is and has changed. No millenial or younger actor today would consider a TV star of lesser standing. I mean one on a big hit show and highly paid. In fact with new lines being formed there is no such thing as a film vs tv star for Millenials, and Gen Z and even some younger Gen X.

RDJ is an arrogant asshole. At least, Perry attempted to talk about his drug and alcohol struggles in order to help others with his book. RDJ shrugs off all questions about his past drug use and, yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s still using. At the recent award shows, he looks “jumpy”.

Jonathan Majors commits an ambiguous, open to interpretation minor physical assault against his ex-girlfirend. Hollywood cuts all ties with him.
RDJ is jailed multiple times for drug-related offenses (and carrying a pistol). As much as everyone praises his wife for supposedly turning his life around, his son Indio has also committed drug related offenses. Following RDJ's release from prison and the commercial success of "Iron Man", Hollywood bends over big-time for RDJ and kiss his ass,
White male privilege.

I like RDJ because I find him funny in his self-deprecating snarky style. He keeps talk shows from being boring.
He understands the assignment (as the kids say): Entertain.

I never got why, back when RDJ was getting in so much trouble, carrying a gun, doing time in LA County jail, he became a much bigger star shortly thereafter. Hollywood seemed to embrace him after that, and his career really took off.

Some addicts live to be old, cranky cunts, and others die at 40 from their addictions. There isn't a science to how addiction kills people.
