I was entranced with these two when I was a child. I would practice being like them all the time.
My parents absolutely hated me.

I was scared of them. I’d run away when I saw them on television.

In the 1970s, when they handed out variety specials like they were free COVID tests, Shields & Yarnell had their own variety show. A weekly chance to watch them move like robots. Whee.

They were cute without the mime makeup, but they still creeped me out.

I insisted they were both brother&sister as well as husband&wife. My mother found me more unlikeable than usual.

I also practiced acting like Shields & Yarnell, OP.

R3, that’s very funny.
We thought they were both cute and talented. I also remember when Yarnell played a villain on Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter.

I thought S & Y were OK, although the robot schtick was unnerving and I had a fear of mimes as a kid. Mummenschanz were the ones who really gave me the night terrors.

They used to perform as street artists in Union Square in SF way back in the day.

Schields played a villain on a Wild Wild West tv movie as well. He was good at it.

Yarnell died of a brain aneuryism in 2010.

Shields is into jewelry making:

Yarnell began as a dancer. I have a friend who did some shows with her at the Muny

In Bye Bye Birdie, Yarnell is the girl Bobby Rydell pulls out of the crowd to dance with in "Lot of Living to do".

FOLLIES! Or rather Broadway Follies, the 1981 Broadway disaster starring Shields & Yarnell that closed on opening night. Somehow, this one missed being on the walls of Joe Allen.

You can thank CBS for our repeated exposure to them back in the day. Their comedy-variety program, The Shields and Yarnell Show, was a CBS series. Their guest appearances on other shows like the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour were all CBS ones too.

I always get them confused with The Captain and Tenille

Wow, he lives in Cottonwood, that's only 20 miles from where I live. Maybe we should meet up!

Yarnell almost got the part of Olive Oyl in the Robin Williams Popeye movie but she couldn't say her lines.

Shields does not look HETEROSEXUAL
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 22, 2023 3:04 AM |
So boring. More like Yawnell. Amirite?

R8 Jesus christ. I seriously hope I don't see them later in my nightmares. Those weird commedia dell 'arte masks coupled with their silence is too creepy. I now know the most terrifying words in the language, "experimental Swiss mime troupe". Let's have the Cheers "meem" to make us laugh.

Oh, Yarnell played Dot Matrix in Spaceballs with Joan Rivers voicing it.

They wanted Lucy to be Yarnell but Gary talked her out of it

Buck would never be Yarnell.

Buck could be Trans-Yarnell

Did they ever blink? That’s creepy. And the bio posted by R14 barely even mentions Yarnell.

I hate these D list stars they were always trying to push on us back in the day.

Didn't Donnie and Marie imitate them a lot ?

r9, I remember them at Ghirardelli Square/Fisherman's Wharf/Aquatic Park in SF while waiting in line for the ferry to Marin. Thought they were a scream, loved the TV series in the 70s. My parents were big fans, too. Clowns creep me out, but not Mimes.
And then there was the SF Mime Troup, a bunch of hot guys wearing makeup with trim bodies and tight clothes that made this 13-year old uncomfortable when one of them came up to me and mimicked puberty (first time shaving, masturbation) in public and then hugged me. This was not lost on my Stepfather, who would give me subscriptions to bodybuilder, wrestling, and Broadway show magazines for Xmas. A decade later, I came out to all of my family (I was the youngest) at the Thanksgiving dinner table with my boyfriend sitting next to me and blamed "Big Dadddy" for forcing me to be gay. My Mom said, "Well, we just don't need anymore grandkids, Pass the gravy, please". And that was that.
