Charlotte,. Scarlett, Quinn, all forms of "Olivia" that keep popping up, and I hate adding "Amelia," since it was my grandma's name, but there ya go.

R8 I have a teacher friend who once joked about all the Kaden's in her class, and she added how bizarre it was that their parents tried to make their Little Kaden "unique" by altering the spelling of his name. I think you can find over 15 spellings using K" and "C" and now ones starting with "Q" are also around.

Emma is not a white trash name. It’s the most popular girl’s name in the country. The richest family I know has a daughter named Emma.

That alone makes it white trash.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 23, 2022 10:54 PM |
Olivia, Charlotte, and Emma are white trash names?? Since when?
I vote for any weirdly spelled variant of Madison, Mackenzie, Ashley, Jaden, Caden, and any first name that is primarily known as a surname: Connor, for example.

Emma and Madison are higher-up the income bracket.
Hillbillies do like -aden names for boys and girls. But like even more anything ending in 'ley/leigh': Harley, Braelee, Raeleigh, Wrylie, etc.

Candy and Brandy are stripper names. My grandma thought Tiffany was a trashy name back in the 70s, and preferred classic names like Katherine. Now, Tiffany seems like a quaint old fashioned name. There are grandmas named Tiffany now.
When they started to be popular 20 years ago Olivia, Charlotte, and Emma were upper middle names (think lawyers’ daughters). As with anything the names move downmarket when the aspirational lower classes get wind of them, and they eventually reach to trailer parks.

"There are grandmas named Tiffany now."
Technically, I could've been a grandma now- if I hadn't aborted daddy's baby 16 years ago.

The equivalents used by chavs in the UK are surprisingly similar, although I am a bit baffled to hear that some of the names that are considered 'white trash' in the US are quite conventional (Mary, Sebastian, Emma, Oliver... Really?).
Common chav boy names: Wayne/Dwayne, Kieron/Keyran, Troy, Kyle, Shane, Mason, Declan, Josh, Connor, Dylan/Dillon, Ashley, Liam, Tyler, Rhys/Reece, Curtis, Damon.
Common chav girl names: Chantelle, Chanelle, Mya, Poppy, Jodie, Jordan, Courtney/Cortnie, Britney, Kayleigh, Ashleigh, Kimberley/Kimberleigh, Leanne, Danielle, Chelsea/Chelseigh, Kylie, Skye.
As you can see, there are quite a few commonalities regarding name choices among the underclass, across the Anglosphere.

I don't have a problem with Aidan/Aiden, OP. It's an ancient name. It has paid its dues. However, modern variations like Jaden, Kayden, Brayden, Hayden, Grayden, and Bladen belong in a grease fire.

My closeted Xennial cousin and his cubefrau wife just had a little girl that they named after my harridan of a grandmother, clearly to pander for inheritance.

They are not considered "white trash"
White Trash DLers who have not known a small child since they were small children themselves 60+ years ago start these name threads.
They are the most bizarre variation of the Eldergay obsession with social class, or the fantasy of an alcohol-fueled WASP upper middle class as seen in black and white movies from the previous century.

I have an American friend who named her daughter Amaryah. I don't believe she fits the definition of W.T., yet I'm bothered by her defensive angst each time someone spells her daughter's name incorrectly.
It is a Hebrew name, and they're not Jewish, but I happen to be, and it is not a common enough name even amongst Jews to expect others to spell it correctly. People try to be too creative, and then the name in question becomes something of a battle.

My Mom’s birth name was originally Donna, and she’s not even Italian. She legally changed it out of shame and disgust, after she moved out from her parents and got married back in the 1980s, and I don’t blame her.
Any name that just means ‘woman’ or ‘girl’ just doesn’t sit right with me.

Somebody in our area puts up the names of Armed Forces members on telephone polls. I saw one the other day for a kid named Cwentin. I would bet everything I own they aren't trying to be clever or different with that spelling, they've just never seen Quentin in print.
