Which was Maggie Smith's best film performance?

The woman is an international treasure, of course. Not counting her telly performances, which of her film turns is most representative of her talents?

Where's Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun?

R1, intelligent human beings don't watch Harry Potter films and would certainly never consider them indicative of Smith's best work. Seriously.

I have a warm place for her performance in Hot Millions.

The film also stars Peter Ustinov, Bob Newhart, and Karl Malden.

Maggie plays a stupid person--maybe for the only time in her career. And she is amazing.

Death on the Nile

Col. Race: After you gave Miss Jacqueline the morphia, she never stirred all night.

Miss Bowers: Exactly. Nervous reaction, booze, and morphia - together they'd have sunk the Titanic.

Tea With Mussolini?

A Private Function?

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? She got a SAG nomination along with Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy, but they lost out Jacki Weaver and Amy Adams when it came to the Oscar noms.

"She smells like fish."

Said by a small boy of Smith's creepy character Philpot in THE PUMPKIN EATER (64).

I also enjoy watching her quietly lusting after hot George Nader in NOWHERE TO GO (58).

It wasn’t a lead role, but Gosford Park.

by Anonymousreply 9May 8, 2022 8:54 PM

QUARTET and PRIVATE FUNCTION are two of her greatest 80s performances.

Harry Potter, shitty films but perfect performance from her. Much like Alan Rickman.

The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearn.

Thanks R4 -- clicked the link to say the exact same thing. "Hot Millions" is totally an unappreciated gem of a movie.

Judith Hearne, Jean Brodie, and in Love And Pain And The Whole Darn Thing, a mediocre film but her performance is lovely and touching.

"Never more is Eleanor Lavish a friend of mine."

She was wonderfully fussy and girlishly romantic in Room w/ a View.

Far as I'm concerned, she is sublime in Everything she does. But a particular favorite that hasn't been mentioned (forgive if it has and I missed it) is California Suite. Funny and vulnerable and meshing perfectly with Michael Caine. Recommend it highly....

I enjoyed her in The Honey Pot (1967) and Evil Under the Sun.

R14 She's not a stupid person in "Hot Millions"; there's a twist where she's actually very bright. But she is playing a British equivalent of an early Goldie Hawn role, and she's wonderful. Funny film.

"A Private Function" opposite Michael Palin: "I think sexual intercourse is in order, Gilbert". Hilarious.

Her chemistry with Rod Taylor is great in the "The VIPs" and she steals the scene has with Richard Burton in it.

I think she was misdirected badly in "Travels with My Aunt" though. Cindy Williams is even better there.

Maggie Smith played an over-the-hill hooker in "My House In Umbria"

by Anonymousreply 21May 9, 2022 2:24 AM

She’s a genius- good in whatever she does- Jean Brody is a tour de force but then gems like Private Function or small roles like Room With A View she creates singularly vivid characters. I’ll watch anything she’s done.
