What to see in Bavaria?

I am going to a conference in Munich next summer and would like to spend some extra vacation time in Bavaria. Any recommendations for anything particularly worth visiting? I'm not interested in seeing the Neuschwanstein because I hear it's hard to see, but I'd be interested in seeing any other of Ludwig II's palaces if they're easier to visit.

I love museums and beautiful old architecture.

by Anonymousreply 95July 17, 2021 12:00 PM

I enjoyed the biergartens especially the one with the river running thru it where people surf. We spent 8 days in Munich then rented a car to see the black forest and walled cities. You will be very close to Austria as well. We watch some Rick Steve's videos to decide what towns to explore. Have fun.

Neuschwanstein is not difficult to see. Many of the coach tours will take you to Neuschwanstein, Linderhoff, and Oberammergau. However, since you are there for the rescheduled Oberammergau Passion Play, you really ought to go. It is performed every ten years (11 due to covid in 2021).

You can get to Salburg on the train!

by Anonymousreply 9July 14, 2021 7:27 PM

I came to Bavaria for the bratwurst, but I stayed for the far right propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 10July 14, 2021 7:29 PM

München is a lovely town

by Anonymousreply 11July 14, 2021 7:32 PM

Avoid Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It really is a Disney fake town that exists to separate American tourists from their money (the church does have a lovely carved carved alter screen by Tilman Riemenschneider .)

I feel the same about Regensburg. The much touted Medieval streets are lined with Medieval buildings covered in 1950s stucco. Occasionally, a detail has been left uncovered, but for the most part, there isn't much left to see. The museum does have an excellent exhibit of when the town was a Roman fort. They have a wonderfully funky opera company if you enjoy opera.

Bamberg was always one of our favorite towns. It was briefly the center of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Henry II was also buried in the old town, alongside his wife Kunigunde. Unfortunately the lovely restaurant, which was in an old mill in the center of the river, is now a wirsthaus.

Augsburg is the third oldest city in Germany and mostly overlooked by Americans. It is worth a visit.

As at least one other person has mentioned, it is easy to get to Salzburg.

by Anonymousreply 12July 14, 2021 7:41 PM

R12 what the hell is a wirsthaus?

A Wursthaus ( = "sausage house" with "sausage" meaning dick, cock = a bar for gays)?

Or do you mean a Wirtshaus?

by Anonymousreply 14July 14, 2021 9:18 PM

Agree with r12 and also highly recommend the town of Bamberg, unesco protected site since 1993. Beautiful architecture and great beer gardens.

[quote] Go to Austria instead.

What part of the fact that the conference is to be held in Munich did you not understand?

by Anonymousreply 19July 14, 2021 9:40 PM

R19, Salzburg it 1.5 hours away by train. Bamberg is nearly 2 hours away. Just because it is in a different country, doesn't mean that it is a long of difficult journey.

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2021 9:46 PM

R19 is obviously well travelled and familiar with Europe, so the need for humility is non existent.

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2021 9:49 PM

What are you crazy? Don't miss Neuschwanstein.

by Anonymousreply 22July 14, 2021 10:11 PM

Neuschwanstein is an easy train ride and short bus ride from München. It’s better than the museums in Münich, frankly.

I’d catch a train to Salzburg or Innsbruck with my extra day(s) if you haven’t been there before. Both easy train rides.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2021 10:14 PM

Linderhof Palace Is also very nice.

by Anonymousreply 24July 14, 2021 10:21 PM

Rent a bike and go along the Isar. It’s amazing.

Stuttgart is the capital city of Baden-Württemberg, the "state" aka Bundesland next to Bavaria. Not exactly the first thing that comes to mind for places to visit IN Bavaria.

R33, I was waiting for someone else to mention that. Thank you.

This is an American board.

by Anonymousreply 36July 15, 2021 9:11 PM

R36, that doesn't reflect well on Americans.

by Anonymousreply 37July 16, 2021 11:00 AM

If you take a tour guide, the small cities are well worth a visit too, like Bayreuth and Ansbach. Munich is pretty unique. It's not like the rest of Bavaria, in positive and nevative respects. If you like culture, go to one of the opera houses in Munich (Staatsoper or Prinzregententheater), and visit the Stuck Villa for example.

by Anonymousreply 38July 16, 2021 11:46 AM

I loved Munich but I gotta warn you girls, the food is carb heavy. Delicious, but unsettling for most of you.

Thanks for the good advice, everyone. Bamberg sounds like a place I should certainly visit, and I will re-think visiting the Neuschwanstein based on your advice.

by Anonymousreply 41July 16, 2021 4:34 PM

R1 Part of my family is from Bavaria. One of our aunts still lived there. To get under her skin we mentioned we were coming to the Fatherland and would make a trip to Dachau. She sure as hell didn't like that at all.

by Anonymousreply 42July 16, 2021 4:37 PM

Neuschwanstein... I hate to say to anybody don't visit it but there isn't much to see. It's a mostly empty castle. The setting is magnificent but I feel like you get a better sense of it looking at pictures. We saw it and Salzburg in the same day as memory serves and in retrospect I would have rather had more time in Salzburg.

by Anonymousreply 43July 16, 2021 4:37 PM

I've never understood the allure of Neuschwanstein. It's not like it's some ancient castle. It was started in 1869 as a nutty prince's fantasy of what a castle should look like. It's newer than parts of my own house.

by Anonymousreply 44July 16, 2021 4:46 PM

If you’re into cars BMW world and the factory tour are great. Easily reachable by Munich public transport.

by Anonymousreply 45July 16, 2021 4:52 PM

Yeah, not much to see. (see link). There are several package coach tours available that will take you to several of Ludwig's castles in one day. You need to see Neuschwanstein and Linderhoff. Anything else is a bonus. Don't attempt to do it on your own (particularly if you are not fluent in German.)

by Anonymousreply 46July 16, 2021 4:53 PM

I don’t get the hate for neuschwanstein, I found it nice. Also on a nice warm day you can take a pedalo out on the lake and view the castles in the hills from the water.

by Anonymousreply 47July 16, 2021 5:02 PM

Crowded, always. Only fourteen of 220 rooms were actually finished and few are furnished. You can't take pictures inside. You can't get in without taking the guided tour which lasts about fifteen minutes. You will probably spend more time waiting for entry. Given the remoteness and time it takes to get out there there can be better uses of time.

by Anonymousreply 48July 16, 2021 5:07 PM

Sorry, the tour is 30 minutes, the entry is around fifteen euros.

by Anonymousreply 49July 16, 2021 5:07 PM

Munich is one of my favorite cities. Go to the art museums, the Wittelsbach Residence, the Theatine Church, Der Alte Peter, the parks, the WWI memorial in front of the state parliament building., and The Deutsches Museum.

Do not miss the Viktualienmarkt, when you are feeling peckish!

The Englischer Garten for its nude parts.

Skip the Oktoberfest park, unless you are going to Oktoberfest.

Go to Dallmayr Delikatessenhaus

If you want a Boiled Wool Jacket, go to Lodenfrey!

by Anonymousreply 50July 16, 2021 5:24 PM

If you do go to Neuschwanstein, get the ticket for both castles (Hohenschwangau). The older one has a lot more to see inside, but the newer one is far more spectacular from the outside. Take the time to go up to Marienbrücke, too. The scenery is gorgeous - especially in the autumn.

(I agree - it’s a super easy day trip from Munich).

by Anonymousreply 51July 16, 2021 5:31 PM

How hot are the Bavarian men?

by Anonymousreply 52July 16, 2021 5:45 PM

Münich has a great bordelo with edging.

by Anonymousreply 53July 16, 2021 5:47 PM

I could be your main attraction, OP!

by Anonymousreply 54July 16, 2021 6:45 PM

People are naked in the city parks. Many of them are hotties.

by Anonymousreply 55July 16, 2021 6:51 PM

Neuschwanstein Is Disneyland.

by Anonymousreply 56July 16, 2021 6:53 PM

In Bavaria you don't say Klöße but Knödel.

Get prepared for a smack in the face if you say Klöße in Bavaria (and Austria).

by Anonymousreply 57July 16, 2021 7:12 PM

Went to Neuschwanstein in high school - it was an eye-opener to get a Teutonic prick tour guide who made fun of us the whole time (stupid foreigners would never guess at how advanced the building was, etc).

by Anonymousreply 58July 16, 2021 7:22 PM

The Great Wall of Bavaria is amazing. I can't even imagine how the Bavarians built that wall so long ago, but it sure did keep out the Dutch.

[quote] Get prepared for a smack in the face if you say Klöße in Bavaria (and Austria).

WE should have just exterminated all Germans after we won the war. Nasty, violent people.

by Anonymousreply 60July 16, 2021 7:33 PM

R55 you live in 1975. The only naked people in the Englische Garten have been there since 1975.

by Anonymousreply 61July 16, 2021 7:36 PM

Munich has great Brazilian and Colombian escorts because it’s legal there and people have money. But they are not too expensive because there is competition. Treat yourself to one ore two (or five).

by Anonymousreply 62July 16, 2021 7:38 PM

If you want to see naked people there are plenty of Baggersees (quarry ponds) around Bavaria. Plus gay cruising spots and venues like bath houses and such.

by Anonymousreply 63July 16, 2021 7:41 PM

It was 1985, actually. No more?

by Anonymousreply 64July 16, 2021 7:48 PM

Bavaria is the Alabama of Germany.

by Anonymousreply 66July 16, 2021 8:06 PM

[quote] How hot are the Bavarian men?

If you like your men to be no-nonsense and direct with you, go for them. To be honest, looks-wise, they're no hotter than any guy you'd find in a mid-western US state or anywhere in the US generally, except they're uncut.

I found the men in the Czech Republic, northern Italy and Hungary hotter. They were slimmer and their trousers tended to be tighter, showing off some nice, pert bubble butts and ample packages.

Neuschwanstein is an experience, but go to Nymphenburg Palace instead. It's a lovely 18th century palace that is still used as a residence of the Wittelsbach.

Don't forget Dachau. It's mind blowing that you get off a bus in a suburban section, walk around the corner and you're confronted with a concentration camp..

Try Weiss beer and Weisswurst. Blutwurst, if you're adventuresome

Franconian wine is very good

by Anonymousreply 67July 16, 2021 8:18 PM

Lederhosen don't really show off a guy's butt, do they? I haven't ever seen one that did.

by Anonymousreply 68July 16, 2021 8:31 PM

Nymphenburg palace was also used for filming “last year at Marienbad”

Linderhof is much more interesting than Neuschwanstein. King Ludwig really spent time there. You also can take the S Bahn S 6 to Starnberg and spend a nice day on Lake Starnberg. May be you take the Dampfer for a nice round-trip on the lake.

by Anonymousreply 71July 16, 2021 9:44 PM

Do not miss Bavaria DisneyWelt. It's just like being at Disneyworld in Florida... except there aren't any Mexicans. My hubby and I are planning to go back just to do DisneyWelt again.

by Anonymousreply 72July 16, 2021 9:47 PM

No to Blutwurst. It's literally "blood sausage." My German BF says he wouldn't even feed it to the dogs.

by Anonymousreply 73July 16, 2021 9:47 PM

Munich's my favorite German city and Neuschwanstein is definitely worth a visit.

by Anonymousreply 74July 16, 2021 9:49 PM

He's a great-grandson of King Ludwig II, the crazy gay bloke who had Neuschwanstein and other castles in Bavaria built.

I'd love to do a bit of sizemeat verificatia on him.

According to German Wikipedia, he's the great-great-grandson of Ludwig III, the last king of Bavaria.

Ludwig II was engaged to Sophie, a sister of Empress Elisabeth ("Sissi") of Austria, for a while, but the marriage never materialised as Ludwig delayed the wedding and eventually called off the engagement.

Anyway, Prinz Ludwig looks a fucking lot like the Kini (the Bavarian term for Ludwig II) so there must be some genetic correlation, some common ancestor.

by Anonymousreply 76July 16, 2021 10:21 PM

Sexy Prinz Ludwig's great-great-grandfather was a first cousin of the Kini.

Blutwurst with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes can actually be quite delicious. Anthony Bourdain, R.I.P., wouldn't say NO to that and at least give it a try. Only then you know what it really tastes like for yourself.

If you like meat, the old fashioned Bavarian meals are delicious. Pork nuckles, Schweinsbraten, Weißwurst if fresh cooked are worth a try. There are good restaurants, sometimes called Landgasthaus on the countryside. Just have a look at the well known sites like tripadvisor or ask the locals for recommendations. If you are not into local food, even in the countryside there are really good Italian restaurants worth a visit or just restaurants cooking a more modern style. And if you don't want to try it, there is always a McDonald's not far.

by Anonymousreply 85July 16, 2021 11:21 PM

Make sure you visit the Neue Pinaothek. It's open on Monday morning (as opposed to most museums) and you will be practically alone in front of amazing art. And visit that fabulous paper store Carta Pura nearby on Schellingstrasse. And have a noodle soup in the Schelling Salon.

R90, 40% of Rothenburg was destroyed during the war, including 30% of the old town. It was rebuilt specifically with an eye to attract American tourists and the two American military bases in nearby Ansbach.

by Anonymousreply 92July 17, 2021 10:51 AM

It is still worth seeing, r92.

by Anonymousreply 93July 17, 2021 11:35 AM

R93, not in summer when it is full of Viking Riverboat Cruise tourists whining that they can't get peanut butter, and have to pay for rolls and toilets. Better to spend two days seeing all of Ludwig's castles, or take a side trip to Bamberg, Salzburg or Augsburg. Rothenburg is a 3 hour train ride. Nürnberg is only an hour.

Nürnberg is a great place to visit. It sounds as if the Op would enjoy the Dürer House. The tour of the beer tunnels is great. There is also a tunnel tour regarding the Nazi art. The museums are wonderful.
